What's Up With the Delay?

As you use the SlingPlayer application, you will notice the delay between the time you press a button on the SlingRemote and the actual change in the video. Unfortunately, this behavior is caused by using the IR control cable.

Think about it. If you are using a cable or satellite box with a DVR, your DVR is controlling this device using an IR control cable (often called an IR blaster), or a serial cable. Your Slingbox uses the supplied IR control cable to control your DVR. This communication takes time.

To change a channel, for example, you press a button on the SlingRemote, which "tells" your DVR, which tells your cable or satellite box to change the channel.

Not to blame others, but the biggest part of the delay is when the DVR talks to the cable or satellite box. In fact, without these boxes, the Slingbox is pretty darn fast.

Remote commands are slower if you're using a DVR; a bit faster when you're using a cable or satellite box without a DVR; and fastest when you're using an antenna or analog cable line connected directly to the Antenna/Cable input on the Slingbox.

Let's hope for a wireless world.
