Installing Your Slingbox

Read on and learn all you need to know and more about the installation of your Slingbox. Connecting devices can be intimidating, but our goal is to make the installation a user-friendly experience, because once your Slingbox is connected, you'll be hooked!

Assumptions

If you have a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and a cable or satellite box, your DVR is connected to your cable/satellite box and you are using one of the following to control your cable/satellite box:
  • an IR emitter (sometimes called an IR blaster)

  • a serial cable

  • You have a DSL or cable router

  • Your router is properly configured
IMPORTANT: If you have a high definition DVR, and you are using Component Out to connect to your TV, it may be the only active output (the standard outputs may be inactive in this case). You should use the standard outputs to connect your DVR to the Slingbox.

NOTE: You'll be notified on this site when new software is available for your Slingbox and how to get it.

Connections Demystified

If you're reading this you get the basic idea of what the Slingbox can do and why you have to add it to your growing mountain of A/V devices.

You connect your television source (antenna, cable, satellite, even through a DVR) to the Slingbox, then connect the Slingbox to your home network and watch your living room TV programming from wherever you are by turning [[ad]]any laptop or Internet device into a personal television. It's that simple.

Audio and Video Connections

Connecting Your Television Source

IMPORTANT: If you are using a DVR and a cable or satellite box, the DVR should be connected to your cable or satellite box.

If You Have a Cable Box, Satellite Box or DVR

Connect a supplied A/V cable from the unused OUTPUTS on your cable box, satellite box, or DVR (whichever is connected directly to your TV) to the AUDIO/VIDEO IN plug on the Slingbox. If your cable box, satellite box, or DVR does not have available outputs to connect directly to the Slingbox, complete the optional connection shown in step so your TV receives the television signal.

TIP: If your cable box, satellite box or DVR has S-VIDEO OUT, use the supplied S-VIDEO cable instead of the yellow video cable from this device to the Slingbox. You still need to connect the red and white audio cables.

If Your TV has a VHF/UHF Input Only

If the incoming antenna or cable TV source is connected directly to your television, add a
cable splitter, with one output going to your TV and the other connected to the
ANTENNA/CABLE In plug on the Slingbox.

About the Audio and Video Cables

Refer to the "Connection Overview" article for information on the audio and video cables used to connect your television source to your Slingbox.

From what I am reading; If I am set up with the Slingbox hooked up to my router and the TV cable source with a splitter, I should have no problem watching my selected shows on my laptop. Is that correct, even with no PC at home?

September 25, 2008 11:11 AM

Correct. Having a computer at home is not required. All that's needed is the Slingbox, a source, and a client. You'll need to have your laptop on your network for first time setup.

That will give you an overview of how Finder IDs work, which is how SlingPlayer can connect to your Slingbox from outside your network.

In reading the instructions on how to install the solo there is a sentance that refers to connecting the antenna cable directly to the solo box. I cant find it on the box. Do I need a device with a digital tuner in order to watch tv thru the Solo?

The SOLO does not have a built in tuner. This step is not applicable to you, but for owners of the Slingbox PRO, PRO-HD, Tuner, and Classic.

I have a Slingbox classic but unfortunately it doesn't work with hd-fios setups as there is no way to get 480i output from HD STB's that are using the HD outputs to the TV. All the 480i outputs are disabled if you use the HDMI connection or the component outputs. Pretty sure this is no workaround for this unless you buy the HD version of the slingbox.

I don't know what Slingbox you have. If it's the PRO-HD, you'll want to go

Cable --> Two-way splitter

Two Way Splitter Line 1 Out to Slingbox  In --> Slingbox out to DVR IN

Two Way Splitter Line 2 -->TV IN

DVR Composite/Svideo/Component with Audio OUT to Slingbox Input (It may be necessary to use the pass-thru to return the DVR signal to the TV)

There are standalone devices that will downconvert Component HD to S-video or composite, but they will likely be more expensive than the Slingbox PRO-HD.

Basic problem to connect Slingbox solo on my network. SlingPlayer does not discover
my Slingbox. 1. Slingbox and PC are connected to the same router. 2.Slingbox IP address is recognized in DHCP client list, and "ping" response of the IP address is normal. 3. Security Software (Norton Internet Security) is removed, and put
the SlingPlayer SW in Exception list of Windows XP Firewall. 4. Error number
0x8007274C. 5. After I pushed Reset button of Slingbox, the situation was the same.
6. At first I updated the SlingPlayer to the latest version.
Is this the problem of the firmware in the Slingbox solo ? The Slingbox solo was shipped around Jan. 20, 2010. Help !
