Attaching the IR Emitter
Refer to "Connection Overview" for information about the IR emitter cable that comes with your Slingbox. This section will assist you with finding the IR sensor on your cable/satellite box or DVR.The IR emitter is used to control your cable/satellite box or DVR, whichever is connected directly to your TV. Proper positioning of the emitter ends of the cable is easy if you know what you're looking for.
Every box that has a remote control also has a sensor that receives the commands from the remote control. For example, if you press the Channel Up button on your remote control, your TV tunes to the next channel. To put your Slingbox in control of the action, you need to position the emitters in range of the IR sensor on your cable/satellite box or DVR.
Finding the IR Sensor
The IR sensor is usually on the front of the box. It may be near the power light. Follow these tips to find the sensor:- Look for a dark, sometimes reddish see-through plastic "window" on the front of the box. This is usually where the sensor resides.
- If you can't see the IR sensor, shine a flashlight through the window. Look for a small light bulb. This is the sensor.
- With your cable/satellite box or DVR remote in one hand, place the other hand over the front of that box. Press the POWER button on the remote control. If the box turns on or off, move your hand to another location on the front of the box. Repeat these steps until you can't turn the power on and off. Your hand is covering the IR sensor if the box does not turn on or off.
- Refer to the owner's manual for your cable/satellite box or DVR. The location of the sensor may be shown there.
Positioning the IR Emitters
The IR emitter cable has two emitters. Once you have found the IR sensor, place one emitter on top of your cable/satellite box or DVR, and one on the bottom. Remove the covering on the emitter ends and affix the emitter so that the bulb faces the IR sensor on your box. Each emitter end should extend out about one inch. Position the emitters only on the box that is directly connected to your television.Network Connections
Setting up Your Home Network to Include Your Slingbox
Since the Slingbox allows you to watch your television on a computer, you need to get that signal to your home network. If you've set up a home network you probably already know what to do. If someone else set up your network for you, give us a chance to help you before making that frantic phone call. Before you include the Slingbox in your home network, make sure your network is up and working. Once you have connected all the cables from your television source to your Slingbox, you're ready to go. You might be surprised to find out that during the setup wizard it just worked. That's as designed, of course. If you are having trouble, read on.
Connecting Your Slingbox Using the Supplied Network Cable
Connect the supplied network cable to the Network connector on the Slingbox and to an Ethernet port on your router. You may need to purchase a longer network cable if the supplied network cable cannot reach your router. You can also connect your Slingbox wirelessly.Wireless Connections
You can optionally connect your Slingbox to your home network wirelessly using wall-plugged Powerline adapters or a standard wireless Ethernet Bridge. Keep in mind that you need a wireless router to do this. Wireless setups can vary by device. Refer to the instructions that come with the wireless equipment for actual setup instructions and troubleshooting.Using Wall-Plugged Powerline Adapters
Powerline technology allows wireless connection to your home network using existing electrical outlets. You'll need two wall-plugged adapters to include the Slingbox in your wireless network.Using a network cable, connect the Slingbox to a powerline wall plug, and then connect the powerline plug to a nearby electrical outlet. Do the same at the router end. The communication is transmitted over existing electrical wiring.
Start the SlingPlayer application once you have completed the connections. You should see video if you have properly connected the audio, video and network connections.
Using a Wireless Ethernet Bridge
An Ethernet bridge physically connects to devices out of cable reach from your router and then connects wirelessly to your home network.
Place the Slingbox and the wireless bridge near your television source. Using a network cable, connect the Slingbox to the Ethernet port on your bridge. To use a bridge with the Slingbox, set up your wireless bridge using the manufacturer's setup instructions.
Start the SlingPlayer application once you have completed the connections. You should see video if you have properly connected the audio, video and network connections.
