Mixed results at local WiFi hotspots

Where I live there is a popular bread/bakery chain that advertises free WiFi for its customers and I can't tell you how many fights I have gotten into over the last remaining power outlet as I somehow stretch a $1.60 cup of coffee over 5 hours of work!
So naturally, it was the first place I literally ran to with my new Slingbox software and, then ran into trouble. While they do graciously allow unlimited web browsing, IM, and email, they seem to be blocking the key ports/protocols needed for the Slingbox.
After ditching that chain, I went to one of my backup spots only to find that they too, offer "limited" Internet access. In both places, I was getting a password dialog box whenever I attempted to connect to the Slingbox at home. I don't remember setting a password and none of my standards were working. Strike two and starting to feel like maybe this was a pipe dream.
Third time is, as they say the charm however. I found a weak link so to speak and with this "wide open" connection, I was overjoyed to find my TiVo screen staring back at me from the Sling Bar. Everything worked exactly as it did at home. And this was all wireless so I can't wait to see how much better it is from the office or a wired hotel room. Gonna go pack my bags.
