Carti,

Your question will probably not get the proper attention if connected to the FAQ page. Post your question in the forums for more exposure. Click FORUMS in the NAV bar at the top of the page.

FAQ suggestion:

The following Q&A in the FAQ may be incomplete.

How do I improve the picture quality?

Though there can be many reasons why the picture could be poor, the most common fixes are to increase your upstream bandwidth from your home, or connect from a different area or hotspot.

As noted elsewhere, I was on the South Island of New Zealand last week, where broadband is readily available over the whole island, but of poor quality. The result was that, at first, everywhere I used Slingbox, the picture appeared as a succession of stills. The issue there was essentially live with it or abandon Slingbox. Increasing upstream bandwidths or connecting from a different area or hotspot simply weren't options.

After some experiementation, I discovered that a reaonsably good picture could be obtained by adjusting the Video bitrate under the Player/Slingplayer Options/Encoding/Manual Adjust Stream/Video Bitrate to a level that reduced the Bandwidth Required to a level consistent with the actual experienced bandwide. (It seems to me that, under the automatic option, the Slingplayer should do this without intervention.) The quality of the picture was substantially reduced, of course, but the viewing experience was nevertheless vastly enhanced, because the images were continuously in motion.

Accordingly, for your FAQ to complete, you may want to consider explaining that the video quality can't be better than the video bitrate, and in environments where the bidrate is low, it is important to manually reduce the Video Bitrate to the level consistent with the experienced level.

MacWilder,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll revise that section the next time I update the FAQ.

If anyone else has other good suggestions for the FAQ, I'd love to hear them.

Does anyone know if you can connect a DIRECTTV signal straight to the Slingbox or do you to come out of your converter box?

December 31, 2006 1:10 PM

I doubt it. SB is not capable decoding the satelite signal, anymore than your TV is. You have to go from the converter box to the SB. But do not be wary; your picture will not suffer any on your home TV.

How can I setup my Dish Network DVR510 remote? I selected this model and all other models during remote setup but will still not work? Thanks.

February 2, 2007 9:23 AM

I have a DISH DVR510 and I had trouble getting the remote to work then discovered that the cable that sends signals to the receiver wasn't solidly pushed into the back of the Slingbox.  I unplugged it and plugged it back in and the remote began working.  Other than that I just followed the instructions in the setup software.
