If you've ever taken an active role in community discussions, you may never have realized that keeping the boards clean and organized doesn't happen all by itself. Here in the Sling Community, there is one member who's risen to the occasion to make sure that everyone's community forum experience is a positive one. Read on to learn more about "Brandon" - The SlingCommunity Moderator!
Brandon, can you please tell us your name and where you're from, and a little bit about what you do in real life?
My real name is Brandon and I live in the burbs of Phoenix. I am the Dealer Development Manager of a vary large wholesale and retail tire company. Been in the tire business since High School, around 25years.... You do the math. I do travel a lot with my job so that's why I looked into Slingbox in the first place.
Do you have a family? Can you tell us a bit about them?
Actually, I have a large family. 6 kids, ages 13 - 28. We all live relatively close to each other so we see each other often and are very close.
You volunteered to be a moderator on the site. From what we understand, you've been moderating for a long time... even going back into the BBS days. Can you tell us a little about that?
I started messing around with computers before the Internet was commonplace and also ran a dial-up bulletin board system. For those of you that are not familiar with what that is, it's a system of computers that you can call into from your modem and share files, messages, tech tips, etc. It ran slow, but if you wanted to communicate with the world and get the latest software or tech help it was the only place to go! I also wrote software to facilitate the BBS and was the regional manager of the group of BBS's in our state.
I have moderated several different forums on different topics from cars to computers. They are always a blast to participate in. You may see me around the Tivo Community, Blackberry community, aximsite, DD-WRT site or Virtual Weber site. I am usually using the handle DaddyBC. The name of my BBS was DAD'S BBS and the name kind of stuck.
How does SlingCommunity compare to other sites you've moderated in the past? Any good story on something you saw posted that you had to take down?
The SlingCommunity folks are great! There have been very few squabbles and no one is fast to criticize others. I have been on boards that newbies are afraid to post because of the way they get hammered about a question. Not so with the SlingCommunity; everyone seems willing to help out, without belittling another.
How many Slingboxes do you own, when did you get them, and what do you have them hooked up to?
I own two Slingboxes. I have them both hooked to Series 2 TiVos, using Digital Cable. I got my first one right when they came out. In fact, had to show the "Best Buy" guy where they were. The second one I got about a month ago.
They are both hooked to a modified TiVos system (nothing illegal). On our systems you can watch TV, Listen to music from a dedicated server, get the weather reports, movie listings, download and watch whatever movies I have on the server, and listen to Sirius radio. Naturally, anything the TV and audio system can do I can Sling! My wife loves this because everything she needs is in one place.
I tend to modify just about every electronic gadget I have to get the most out of them. For example I currently have 4 WRT54G routers in various WDS or bridging modes. I use them for Slinging, Xbox Live, my server, etc.
Since you got your Slingbox, do you find yourself watching more TV than you used to?
Yes and no. The Slingboxes are always on in the house and playing in the background. But we might not necessarily be watching. We might just be listening to music. For example instead of tying my back porch speakers to my inside stereo system I just use a cheap laptop and some kick butt speakers to listen to music in the backyard. But, I do watch my local programming and recordings while out of town instead of what's on in the hotel.
If you could pick a favorite show, what would it be?
Favorite TV show right now... LOST
Favorite movie would have to be The Big Lebowski. Hence the "Brandon" Handle.
Do you have any other hobbies that take up your time when you're not working or checking in on the site?
I am into the whole Home theater experience and have a great system. But we also take a lot of time to go camping, small trips and vacations. I also am into smoking... Meat... I have several gas and charcoal grills and smokers. We also do a lot of things together as a family.
What's your favorite feature on the Slingbox? If there were one thing you could change about it or add to it, what would it be?
Favorite feature. The Sling Finder! It is a no brainer to sling from where ever I am! I also love the Mobile player and my Axim X51v. As you can imagine the thing I would like most the ability for "dad" to kick someone off remotely when he wants to watch TV.
As a veteran, you've seen many of the changes and improvements that we've made thus far. What are some of your impressions of the SlingCommunity?
I like what you have done with the forums. They are getting better all the time. From a user stand point they are easy to navigate, search and post. From the moderators standpoint the tools provided make it easy to keep the board clean and running smooth. The best part is that it is always improving, and when features are requested the admin team listens.
We'd like to thank Brandon for not only taking the time to share more about himself with the community, but also for all the work he puts in to moderating the community forums, and the time he takes to answer the questions of other users. He's been nothing short of spectacular, and we're proud to have him as a member of the community. The next time you bump into "Brandon" in the forums, be sure to say hello!
