Meet "bounderboy" - The SlingCommunity Moderator

If you've ever taken an active role in community discussions, you may never have realized that keeping the boards clean and organized doesn't happen all by itself. Here in the Sling Community, there a few members who have risen to the occasion to make sure everyone's community forum experience is a positive one. Read on to learn more about "bounderboy", one of these hard working SlingCommunity Moderators!

bounderboy, can you please tell us your name and where you're from, and a little bit about what you do in real life?

Well my real life name is Robert Clegg, and I dwell in Newcastle Under Lyme which is in Staffordshire which in turn (and if you can’t already tell by the accent) is in the UK…

To earn the pennies I work for a company called ID2 Media, we are a Video production company and have been very much involved in streaming media since its first inception, which probably led me to find my first Slingbox Smile. I am the Production Manager there.

Do you have a family? Can you tell us a bit about them?

I certainly do, I have a wife - yeah geeks can get girls, too – Claire and a little girl called Elize who is 3yrs old. My wife is also expecting our second who is due on the 29th September… Any chance of Paternity leave Matt?

You volunteered to be a moderator on the site. From what we understand, you've moderated other boards in the past. Can you tell us a little about that?

The forums I moderated before were very small compared to Slingcommunity, and most of my experience is participating on other boards, as Google is testament. I was an active member of Tivo Community, until I sold [my TiVo] last year, and love Sky forums on Digital Spy… these are very good resources.

You've also been a part of some of the private Beta groups that Sling has organized. Can you tell us a little about that experience?

I could tell you but being under NDA means I would have to shoot you if I did. Suffice to say if you are willing to put a small amount of effort in it's worth it. It is very rare these days that you get to shape a product without being an employee.

How many Slingboxes do you own, when did you get them, and what do you have them hooked up to?

Much to the non-amusement/amusement of my wife/Friends I have two boxes. The first one I purchased was from Best Buy in Chicago in March. I was there on business and I had been looking out for them and on a bit of impulse I researched (using Slingcommunity) that it was possible to use them with a PAL AV source. So I went and bought one and snuck through customs with it. My main reason for wanting a Slingbox was to be able to watch Cricket at work during The Ashes - it was very frustrating during the summer as cricket is played during the day! Hence to say once I got the setup I was hooked. I have two Sky+ boxes (English version of TIVO) one upstairs and one downstairs, and although the NTSC box worked fine with it, the remote control codes and skins were very much hacked together and a bit clunky. So as soon as the UK version was released I had to have it to make sure both sky+ boxes had a slingbox each, and making sure I always had access if someone else was watching the other one. I also had access to PAL boxes extra functions.

As a UK resident, you had a US Slingbox long before the Sling released the UK version. How did people react when you showed them your Slingbox?

Well people have been very impressed and a little disbelieving when I first mentioned it to them. Though I must admit the actual styling of the box was not received that well as they were expecting a silver metal slim box for under the TV. To me its looks were never offensive, and at the price point achieved, not much more was expected. On the whole, people have been very impressed, but can’t wait for average uploads to increase over here and then people will be gobsmacked!

Since you got your Slingbox, do you find yourself watching more TV than you used to?

Actually no – probably less – and this is mostly because I am constantly reading the SlingCommunity forums. I must admit I perhaps do not use the Slingbox remotely as much as I do on my LAN – I find it an excellent video sender, and with the new super bit rates obtainable on the beta SlingPlayer, unbeatable.

If you could pick a favorite show, what would it be?

My Favourite thing to watch is sport – Football and cricket mainly. I am an Arsenal supporter through and through, and try and watch as many games as I can from my armchair. If I had to pick a show it would probably be Top Gear.

Do you have any other hobbies that take up your time when you're not working or checking in on the site?

Well apart from watching sport and “other” surfing - I like to go to they gym three times a week and the rest of the time is took up with the family…

What's your favourite feature on the Slingbox? If there were one thing you could change about it or add to it, what would it be?

My favourite feature is the internal video sending functions. As mentioned previously, I was very surprised how much I have used this functionality of the box. My killer app would be to be able to stream to more than 1 client on the LAN and to a PSP Smile. Sorry that is two isn’t it..

As a site veteran, you've seen many of the changes and improvements that we've made thus far. What are some of your impressions of the SlingCommunity?

Well, the Slingcommunity is excellent – being such a new formed forum there is quite a tight knit community. There doesn’t tend to be the flaming etc.. found on other forums and takes little moderation. It is great to see to see new UK users arriving all the time and hope we can improve our percentage of membership quite quickly, Hopefully Matt can implement a function soon so that UK users are disguisable more easily to help trouble shooting.

We'd like to thank Rob for taking the time to share more about himself with the rest of the community, and also for all the work he puts in to moderating the community forums. He's been a valuable asset to the community, and we're proud to have him as a member. The next time you bump into "bounderboy" in the forums, be sure to say hello, and to thank him for helping Sling mold the UK Slingbox into the fantastic product it is today.
