The Slingbox PRO Review (Page 4 of 6)

Setting Up the Coaxial Input

When configuring the coaxial input, you'll need to indicate whether or not you've connected a regular antenna/cable line, or if you've attached an external source. Unlike the Slingbox Tuner, the PRO can handle both types on the coaxial input.

If a cable or antenna is connected, the next step is to specify which is connected. The next step is a choice of what kind of channel scan you wish to perform, and you’re presented with two options: detailed or basic.

The basic option will be faster (took 2 minutes 17 seconds scanning basic cable), but may find less channels depending on the quality ofservice you receive. The detailed scan will take longer (a lot longer! 10minutes 18 seconds for the same job), but will do a better job of finding fringe broadcast stations. Antenna users should probably opt for the detailed scan, but cable subscribers will probably be just fine with the basic. In my tests with regular cable, the detailed and basic scans found the same number of channels.

If you connect a cable/satellite receiver or some other external source on the RF input, it will be set up following the same steps as the A/V inputs. The only exception is that you'll be asked what channel the external device uses. Typically, most devices operate on channel 3, but check your actual device.

Configuring A/V Devices

In the set up wizard, select the input that you've plugged your external device in to. On the next screen, you’ll need to indicate what kind of device is connected to the Slingbox. Sling Media has done a tremendous job in adding support for products ranging from DVRs, to Cable/Satellite boxes, to DVD players, and beyond. The Slingbox doesn’t have the remote control codes for everything, but they continually add new devices through software and firmware updates. You can find a list of currently compatible devices at Sling Media’s website.
