Slingbox PRO, Slingbox AV, & Slingbox Tuner Performance Review (Page 1 of 5)

Even though there are hardware and connection differences between each Slingbox in the family, they’re all pretty similar in regards to audio and video performance. It’s the combination of firmware and software, called SlingPlayer, that really determines the actual performance of the device. It’s important to point out that this review evaluates a specific build of the software and firmware, which will undoubtedly be improved in the weeks/months ahead. In this review, I’ll focus on how these new Slingboxes perform with the lastest build of SlingPlayer, and how the performance compares to the original Slingbox.

Sling Media has managed to pack everything for all of their Slingboxes, including Classic, into one. As Jeremy Toeman of Sling Media put it, “One build to rule them all.” This certainly goes a long way for simplifying the installation process for anyone who owns multiple Slingboxes, including the original. SlingPlayer knows which device you have connected, and presents options accordingly. For the most part, most options are available for all models, differing only in the input selection available.

Sling Media has given the SlingPlayer a face lift in the form of a new default skin called "Red Line", which will be bundled with every download of the SlingPlayer. It looks professional, clean, and very attractive. If you're still hooked on some of the older skins, the classics like Bauhaus, Brushed Steel, SmokedGlass, and SlingPlayer 1.0 White are still included.

For my tests, performance observations are based on a comparison between the Slingbox PRO and Slingbox Classic connected via S-video and direct cable, unless otherwise noted. HD comparisons tested with Slingbox PRO connected via component video, and S-Video for the Slingbox Classic (highest quality connection available). SlingStream set to medium action profile, VMR rendering and VMR9 options selected, SlingStream Smoothing disabled, highest quality streaming mode available, unless otherwise noted. Testing performed with SlingPlayer 1.4.0.193, the latest build available at the time of writing.

The test platform consists of the following hardware: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, nVIDIA GeForce 7600GT, Windows XP Professional SP2.
