Additional U.S. Icons for SlingPlayer Favorites Buttons

For nearly two months, I was honored to be a part of the Beta test team for the second generation of Slingboxes. While I was tuning, adjusting, reinstalling, and just plain watching the super (and sometimes not-so-super) TV picture in the upper right corner of my screen, I got started adding some icons for use in favorites. There were several HD channels that were missing. A couple of cable channels had changed their names. In fact, so did some over-the-air networks. Then I set up icons for my local channels. While I was doing that, I decided I ought to use a standard template for for the locals that would indicate the network affiliation, the call letters, and the channel number.

Just of the few U.S. icons available

You might guess where it went from there. There were members of the Beta team from Chicago, New York, and a few other large cities. I thought I might

give them a small gift of their own icons. Using my template, it was pretty easy to paste in the information for their local channels. Once I got started, I couldn't stop. First it was big cities. Then there were the smaller ones. To make a long story short, from the base of just over 150 U.S. icons supplied with SlingPlayer, I ended up with more than 1,200 in my file.

SlingCommunity has graciously agreed to host the file within the community as a service for all community members. You are welcome to whatever icons you'd like. There are HD channels, local channels, and even a few for your security cameras. If you have something you'd like to add, you can email the image to channels@bancado.net. If you don't have an image, send the info anyway and we'll see what we can find.

UPDATE 2/20/08

Version 1.6 of the U.S. Channels icon file is available! Version 1.6 contains everything in 1.4, like Sirius and XM Radio music channel icons and now includes new channels and about 50 new icons for the HD channels on DirecTV!

Thanks so much. I did a bit of scouting my own icons and will contribute it I find any gaps.

How do you install the icons into the slingplayer to pick from them, or do you have to import each one as needed?

Hi guys!!! This is one impressive collection!!! Is there anything like it with european channels out there? Cheers, Mike

I echo Sluggo65's question. I can't figure it out either. I have been coming back to this thread for last few days, hoping somebody would spoon feed it to him (me!) Thanks in advance.

[As a continuation of my prior post:] I have downloaded Bancado's icons into my box, but for the life of me I can't seem to get them into my SB Player favorites buttons under "custom" button of the window for placing favorites buttons. I'm sure it is easy as can be, but I just am not doing something right.

Bancado:

I tried to call Sling to help me through utilizing your download.  I have Directv with loads of channels, many of which are not on the Sling list.  They are, however, on yours.  Problem is Sling support won't or can't help me figure out how to use your icons.  The book is useless to a useless user.  Can you please walk me through it.  I can't even seem to be able to unzip them because I don't know what program they should be opened in.  Thanks in advance.

I apologize for for not responding to the last few messages. Evidently I haven't been receiving notification of new comments, but I did get one today.

The zipped file "can" be renamed to us.spl and copied to the c:\Program Files\Sling Media\SlingPlayer\Library folder so that the icons show up when you add or edit a favorite -- BUT -- others have found that there are just so many of them that it is tough to find and select the one that you want.

What most users do is create a new folder named channels within the c:\Program Files\Sling Media\SlingPlayer folder and extract the icons to that folder. Then they use the Custom button to browse to that folder to select an icon.

To extract the icons using Windows XP, right-click on the downloaded file and select "open with compressed (zipped) folders".  Once the folder has been opened, click File and Extract all.

I hope this helps.

The older I get, the better I was.

Many thanks.  I will let you know how it works out.

Bancado:

Many thanks.  I loaded icons from you extensive list for two different boxes -- a regular Directv receiver and a HD Tivo receiver.

After all is said and done, works great for the older, standard definition receiver.  You tap the icon, and it tunes in that channel.

For some reason, even though I did them both the same way, the Hughes box (HD Directv Tivo) does not change channels when I tap a favorite button.  Makes no sense really.  They look pretty as heck though. ??

Again, many thanks for spoon feeding it for me.  I never would have figured it out without your help.

It could be that your second tuner requires an Enter after the channel number.  There is an option box labeled "Append Enter".  Try setting that.

As a matter of fact, channel changes would probably go quicker on your other tuner with that box checked.

Good luck.

The older I get, the better I was.

You're the best.  I will.

Bancado:  Ever get the feeling you're losing it?  All these controls really work much better when the IR blaster remains in front of the IR window of the receiver!  Dah.  Many thanks again.  All is well.
