Has Hell Frozen Over? (close...we finally got the SlingPlayer for Mac out)

For those of you who have followed this saga, you know that we thought we could complete the SlingPlayer for Mac OS X much sooner than we have. The net result was we set false expectations, and that is not an acceptable outcome. I want to personally apologize for the lack of the Mac client before now.

Mea culpa aside...we have some good news... the SlingPlayer for Mac OS X BETA is finally here!

This is just the start...we have lots more work to do...those of you who have been using your Slingbox with a PC know that we are continually working to improve the Sling experience via software updates. The same is true in the case of the SlingPlayer for Mac OS X. There are many things we are working on to make the Production Release better than the Beta, but we rely on you to help! We are open to any and all feedback, suggestions, and comments. Hearing from you, our customer, is invaluable.

A few of the high priority improvements we are making:

  • The current SlingPlayer for Mac OS X looks too much like a Windows application, and our developers are busy making big changes to the UI to make it more consistent with the traditional Macintosh experience.

  • We currently only support OS X 10.4...not sure how many of you are still on 10.3, but we are working on getting a release out that supports it.

  • As with the PC client, we are constantly improving audio/video quality and our SlingStream algorithms. This Beta is not yet up to the quality of the latest PC client, but we'll get there.

I hope you enjoy the first public beta release and look forward to hearing from you.

Please send us feedback to: mailto:macfeedback@slingmedia.com ... Of course, we also encourage you to post on this forum: www.slingcommunity.com/forum/topic/35

Sling on,

Blake

Hey drukeniguana,

Not True! the PAL version should work just fine. What made you think that? Perhaps because we haven't posted it on the UK site yet? If we are communicating that somewhere, please let me know.

Go for it...download it and start slingin' man...

If you have time, we would love to get your input: macfeedback@slingmedia.com

Thanks, you guys are the best !!!

Apology accepted.

Much thanks for keeping the development going.  Although I was upset with the delay, I am happy to start using my Slingbox with my favorite platform.  Now that it's out, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't stop with the upgrades until we get the quality to what the Windoz version has achieved.

You have a good start here.

Thanks again,
Popvideo

I could care less re: Mac support. I want to hear from Blake when he will be restoring my ability to record my media! I bought the dang thing to do just this and it seems Sling has been stonewalling its customers on this DOWNGRADE. Perhaps resources are misapplied?

I have been awaiting the Mac application for a while now and it is worth the wait. I have four Slingboxes and more PC's and Mac's than I care to admit. We have two Slingboxes in one of our homes in Florida and two more Slingboxes in one of our homes in the mountains of Virginia. In this way, my wife and I can watch either Florida TV or Virginia TV from any of our computers. Am I a happy camper? Let me count the ways!

I have the original Slingbox, but it is still on the original firmware. Any idea how I can update it? The installer won't do it for some reason. Where can I find the file so I can manually upload it? Any thoughts?

Alexmuse,

You might want to avoid upgrading the firmware. Doing so will eliminate your ability to record the stream for later playback. This function downgrade was sneakily inserted into the latest firmware "upgrade" and has managed to pretty well antagonize every knowledgable Sling owner.

Sling Media CEO Blake K seems intent upon stonewalling the customer base re: this arbitrary decision. Such customer service!

Congratulations! Just in time to jet off for another couple of weeks in that funny continent with the boot! Thanks for keeping your word and getting OS X up and operational. Sling and Macs should be friends, anyway. Timothy

Great Blake! Now... about my Blackberry - any info at all about when we might see a player for this device?

November 8, 2006 10:28 PM

Hey, not so fast...I wanna see a Palm client in the near future.
