3 Group, Slingbox Bring Mobile TV to the UK with X-Series
Categories: Symbian Mobile Phones / Portable Devices
Imagine a mobile solution that wrapped the power of the Slingbox, unlimited Skype calling, broadband Internet, Google Search, Yahoo Messenger, Orb PC access, and more into a single mobile handset. Sounds good doesn't it? Well, this is no pipe dream... the X-Series from 3 does all this and more, and the UK is getting it first.
Rumors have been swirling that Sling Media was looking to partner up with a mobile operator to bring Slinging to the mobile masses in the UK, and it looks like they've found a partner that is doing something bold, different, and (dare I say) brilliant. That partner is the 3 Group, who has put together a compelling package that combines broadband internet services and applications in a way that's never been done in the mobile industry.
Front and center in the X-Series is SlingPlayer Mobile, which will allow 3 customers to access their home television service while on the go. Until now, SlingPlayer Mobile has only been "officially" available to North American Slingbox owners on Windows Mobile devices. However, in this arrangement, SlingPlayer Mobile will finally be making its debut on the Symbian OS.
This also marks the first time Sling Media has partnered with a mobile operator to meet demand for mobile television on the go, and that might draw the attention of mobile network operators around the world. While the 3 Group offers a way to bring the customers entire home television experience, which includes access to their PVRs, DVD players, and other connected gear, they'll still be figuring out how to sell clips and movie trailers as mobile video.
According to the current information, the SlingPlayer Mobile service will be exclusive to 3 customers who purchase both an X-Series handset and a Slingbox. The SlingPlayer Mobile software will come pre-installed on two different model handsets, the Nokia N73 and the Sony Ericsson W950i.
So how much will this much mobile goodness cost you? X-Series customers will be charged a flat access fee for X-Series mobile broadband services on top of their basic subscription. Sling and Orb users should expect an additional access fee due to the higher bandwidth these activities consume.
While this is fine and dandy for Slingbox owners that are looking for a new cellphone, it doesn't exactly address the needs of Slingbox owners looking to stick with their current provider. Not much is currently known how Sling Media will address the needs of those customers who already have a Windows or Palm based smartphone. Is it only a matter of time until SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows and Palm make their way to the UK?
