In Ubuntu, the use of the System Terminal is very important. It can be found under applications > accessories > terminal . The terminal is a command prompt (much like cmd.exe in windows) but it's much more useful; a lot of software in Linux is console based. We will be using the console in this tutorial, and though many of the things we will do can also be done via the GUI, it's harder to document what needs to be done.
Tutorial
1.) Getting wine 0.9.22 Installed
First, verify you don't have any previous versions of Wine installed. Open the Terminal and type "Wine –version". If a wine_version_number is outputted, it means that a previous version of Wine is installed. If this is the case, open up the Synaptic Package Manager, search for Wine, and remove it from your system! You can do this by right clicking on the Wine package and selecting Remove and hitting Apply.
Download Wine 0.9.22 for Ubuntu 6.06-1 i386
Browse to the files downloaded location, and double click it. This will begin to install wine version 0.9.22. We are using this version due to a bug in later version which makes the SlingPlayer installation fail. Don't worry, we will update to a later version in a bit.
The screen will look like this:
Hit install package. This will install wine 0.9.22 for use with your system.
To check you have the correct version installed, type wine –version in the Terminal. Hopefully, this will output Wine 0.9.22 . If so, Wine is now installed.
