SlingCatcher - Sling Media Brings Place-Shifting and More to TVs (Page 2 of 2)

The second application is called SlingProjector. The focus of this application is to view your computer on any TV through the SlingCatcher, and expands the SlingCatcher’s usefulness beyond just television streaming. With your computer desktop on your TV, you can view any web content, play any music file, watch any format of streaming or downloaded video, run a PowerPoint presentation, edit a word document… anything you can watch, listen, or do with a computer can now be done on your TV.

This is what truly sets apart SlingCatcher from your typical Media Center Extender. While an extender can typically stream certain audio and video content for playback on a TV or audio system, they're typically limited in the types of content you can play. For example, most extenders won't let you playback MP4 video, Ogg, or copy-protected AAC tracks, but the sky's the limit when it comes to SlingCatcher.

Of course, this level of functionality isn’t anything you can’t do already. It’s already possible to connect a personal computer to television, but there’s something to be said about the simplicity of SlingCatcher. It will make getting a computer connected to a TV easier than ever before, and could even provide some new remote streaming solutions down the road. For example, I couldn’t help but wonder what those extra two USB ports on the back of the SlingCatcher are for, and the first thing that came to mind was a USB keyboard and mouse. It would be unbelievably cool if you could use SlingCatcher to connect to, and control, a remote computer. Sling Media didn’t comment on whether or not this will be possible with SlingCatcher, but if they’re listening for ideas…

No doubt a device this flexible will do a lot more than what’s been announced so far, and we can expect to hear more about what exactly this slick piece of technology will do as we get closer to the estimated second quarter debut. One thing's for sure... "Anytime, Anywhere" seems to becoming more true every day.
