SlingPlayer for Windows Mobile Hits the UK

Earlier this month, I had an opportunity to chat with Sling Media's Dave Zatz about a variety of topics. Toward the end of the interview, he commented on how he's looking to members of SlingCommunity for feedback that will help them improve the customer's experience. "For example, I've seen there's some interest in us offering up the Windows Mobile SlingPlayer directly in the UK. That sure sounds reasonable to me. So I've taken it to the executive team and we'll see what happens," he said.
The 1.0 version of SlingPlayer for Windows Mobile phones first hit the US market in late April last year, once and for all bringing the home television experience from the living room to the cellphone. However, "for all" may be a bit overstated. Though SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows devices has been available to the US and later Canada, Slingbox owners in the UK haven't had the opportunity to pick up a copy for themselves and Sling their shows to Windows based phones.
That is, until now.
In an unusually quiet move, Sling Media has added SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Mobile, both Pocket PC and Smartphone versions, to their UK online store. In fact, its possible UK owners have been able to purchase either Windows Mobile version for almost a week. Either it was a move already coming, or Dave has some exceptional presentation
skills. There's no indication that the SlingPlayer Mobile software being offered to the UK market is any different than what's available to the US and Canada, and actually looks like the exact same thing. However, this doesn't mean that remote control capablility will be limited to home devices found in the US or Canada. Remote commands are stored in the Slingbox, so as long as the device (like a Sky box) can currently be controlled by SlingPlayer on your home computer, it will also be controllable through the Windows Mobile client.
Windows Mobile devices make up a smaller percentage of total smartphone devices in the UK, which is an area primarily dominated by the Symbian OS. Sling Media has developed an application compatible with Symbian devices, though SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian remains exclusive to 3's X-Series subscribers in the UK market.
Those in the UK interested in Slinging on their Windows Mobile devices can pick up their copy of SlingPlayer Mobile for Pocket PC or Windows Smartphone through Sling Media's UK online store for 19.99 GBP.
