Slingbox SOLO Review: Hands On With Sling's Latest One Source Wonder (Page 1 of 6)

Weeks back, a new Slingbox dubbed “SOLO” found its way (along with a few other docs) to the FCC website. I’m happy to report that SOLO is indeed real, and if you’re reading this, available for purchase not only in the United States, but also in Canada and overseas. This marks the first Slingbox in history being releasing day and date both at home and abroad. Here I’ll focus on the US/Canadian version of the hardware, but if you want to know a bit more about the UK version, don't miss bounderboy’s review of Slingbox SOLO UK from the British perspective.

What is Slingbox SOLO?

The Slingbox SOLO is the newest model in the Slingbox family of products from Sling media. A Slingbox allows a person to watch their home cable, satellite, or other TV source on a computer or compatible mobile device anywhere in the world where broadband Internet access is available. The original Slingbox (now called “Classic”) made its US debut mid-2005, and forever changed the rules on where television could be seen. Last September, Sling Media replaced the original Slingbox with three new models, differing mostly by the type and amount of connections each offered. Slingbox SOLO is a new addition to the current Slingbox family of products, and is not considered a replacement to anything in the Slingbox lineup. However, based on the connections and feature set of SOLO, I would imagine the Slingbox AV has little life left. All that’s keeping it alive is the $50 price difference.

SOLO fits in the model lineup as so:
  • AV ($129.99) - Designed to control one set-top box
  • SOLO ($179.99) - Designed to control one set-top box and includes support for incoming HD signals via component plus all inputs have pass-thru outputs
  • PRO ($229.99) - has four discrete inputs, including built-in cable tuner, to support multiple video feeds
