Slingbox PRO HD Video Demonstration - 2008 International CES

I love my Slingbox PRO, but after seeing the upcoming Slingbox PRO HD at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show it looks like Slinging an HD source just isn't going to be the same until later this year. Don't get me wrong, PRO does a great job, but there's something to be said about H.264 encoded high definition video that just makes makes SD look like yesterday's TV.

While in the booth, I managed to get a demonstration of the new Slingbox PRO HD by "The Man" (as I was told) Dallas Grove, Program Manager at Sling Media. After watching the video I'll be the first to admit that it does nothing to really show off the video quality of the upcoming Slingbox PRO HD. It's one of those things you really have to see to appreciate (take my word on it, it's unreal), and I'm told it's going to get even better by the time it comes out. Still, check out the video for the full skinny on the Slingbox PRO HD by clicking play below. Enjoy!

very kewl. too bad i bought the Pro and the dongle over a year ago. hard to justify dumping that and spending $400 on this though.

Same here, roughly a year with the pro/hd connect and can't see this at $400 though if the street price is considerably less around the time it's released (say in the low $300 range ), i'd at least be tempted to take the plunge again.

Ah hah.  A little more research shows that I was mislead by SlingMedia when I purchased my first Slingbox Pro under the premise that it could Sling HD content using HD Connect Cable.  I've since learned that the Slingbox PRO I bought is only ""HD Compatible".  What this really means is that it can take an HD source but only streams it in Standard Definition!!!  Buyers BEWARE!! Slingbox PRO's HD Connect does NOTHING but preserve the 16:9 aspect ratio.  It doesn't give you HD like the name IMPLIES!  What a rip!!!

Now they want me to spend another $399.00 to get something I thought I already bought?  What up SlingMedia?

Interestingly, the fine print now appearing on SlingMedia's web-site in regards to the original Slingbox PRO  and HD connect cable contains the "exculpatory language" that proects SlingMedia from legal liability, (see the asterisk on the following page that was not there last summer when I bought the SlingBox Pro and the HD Connect cable: http://www.slingmedia.com/go/hd-connect ), but the fact that they advertised the original SlingBox PRO as HD Compatible, was at best mis-leading, and at worst, an ourtight deception.

Consequently, I really hope SlingMedia plans to do something for us dummies that bought into their lies about the original Slingbox Pro and allow us to upgrade our units at a much reduced cost.  I already paid $250.00 for my Slingbox Pro, fully expecting to get TRUE HD streaming.

I was planning on buying a SlingCatcher in hopes that the HD streaming problem was with the Sofware players and that SlingCatcher would fix the problem providing me full HD steaming out to my big-screen projector by the pool.  Now I see I'll need to buy a whole new SlingBox PRO HD unit for $399.00.  Wow.  I'm very, very disappointed...

I agree with Phil Tymps.

I purchased my slingbox Pro over a year ago and was duped as well into believing what I was getting was the ability to sling HD content and VIEW IT AS HD on the other side.  I bought the Slingbox Pro and then waited the many months later for the much hyped "HD" dongle to come out.   Would be nice if they made this wrong right.

Also I must say that although it's CES and there's lots of noise, get a remote audio system for recording on that camera you used to film this.  This was obviously filmed with intentions of placing on this site for marketing purposes - the least you can do is make it so we can actually fully hear what the guy is saying (especially in the beginning).

If you guys had done the proper research before you bought the Pro, it's stated all over this website and on other techie websites that the original Slingbox Pro doesn't sling true HD. It downconverts the signal, therefore is not a true 100% HD signal. The theory behind the HD connect is junk in junk out. The better the signal you push through the Slingbox (that being HD), the better the output will be coming out on your computer. But if you think the Slingbox Pro HD connect doesn't output a better signal than the SD or composite connection, then you must not be doing something right.

My point was that this information was not on the web-site back in the Spring of 07, and even today it's not prominently displayed other than a small asterisk with reference to their definition of HD Compatible.  Furthermore, because the Slingbox Pro was fairly new, there was not alot of information on the "other techie websites".   Finally, I'm more aggrevated about the fact that they want me to spend another $399.00 for a new box that can stream TRUE HD and are not offering an upgrade.  That is a reasonable frustration, and one I hope Slingmedia considers in their pricing and promotions.

Just to clarify, I do, in fact get better quality picture when tuned into an HD vs. SD broadcast, but it's far from HD and that was my point.
