TV Basics: Multi-Set & VCR Households
TV households with two or more sets accounted for only 1% of the total in 1950. It grew to 50.1% by 1980, and now accounts for 82.5%. VCR penetration grew from 1.1% in 1980 to 68.6% in 1990. Penetration is beginning to drop off from 88.6% in 2006 to 78.7% in 2008.

Digital Video Recorders (DVRs)
DVR sales are expected to reach $16.8 billion in 2008. Nielsen began reporting DVR Universe Estimates in May 2007; as of February 2008 DVR penetration stands at 21.4%. Prior to releasing DVR Universe Estimates, Nielsen had been reporting DVR counts in its National People Meter sample homes. In December of 2005, DVR penetration in NPM sample homes was less than 1 percent; one year later, DVR penetration in NPM sample homes reached 11.4%.
