SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0 Public Beta - Unwrapped and Reviewed

Believe it or not, it's been almost two years since Sling Media released SlingPlayer for PC 1.4 - their last 'significant' upgrade to the software that Slingers rely on to watch their home television on a computer screen anywhere in the world. The wait is finally over... SlingPlayer 2.0 is here... at least in Public Beta form. Will it exceed your wildest expectations?

Ryan
Member Love reading all of the posts. A lot of you do need to relax but its cool I feedback is always nice no matter how bitchy you are when you give it. Anyway my questions has to do with the new guide. I love the new guide because sending messages to the on screen guide from China is kind of annoying to the picture. My problem is it is picking up the time of my PC which is in China which is 12 hours ahead of the time where my sling box is located.

So basically is how do I get the new guide to show the time where the box is not where my pc is?

Ever since I downloaded the new player, I have experienced difficulty, at times, viewing the video stream. The picture will look like the horizontal tracking is off, resulting in a split screen...almost like a scrambled cable channel. This issue seemed to coincide with my upgrade to the new player. Anyone else have this problem?

I recent downloaded desktop 2.0 and show a BIG drop in bit rate, from 1000kbps to 150kbps. I unistalled 2.0 and reinstalled 1.5 but I'm still getting the lower bit rate. I have XP on both my desktop (where the slingbox is) and my laptop (where I recieve my signal). Any suggestions?

tbemie,

This has been called the "split video" issue and is being discussed in this thread: http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/thread/29638

Seems to affect people with DirecTV configurations, however, some of us who do not have DirecTV also have seen the problem. A fix which seems to correct it is being beta tested and hopefully will be released soon.

Hello Everyone, I've just joined yesterday AFTER having downloaded 2.0 Beta. My reason for joining was to find the remote code that I urgently needed.

I'm running a Sling Classic that I've had since it was invented, connected via Comcast WiFi to a Windows Vista machine. My install went without any problems and I love the new interface. Since we have just basic extended cable (not digital) there's no STB to contend with. My streaming speed is ~2300kbps. The new guide is an absolute delight for me, I guess since I've never had one before.

I'm using it to control a Philips DVDR3575H (for which I just found the code (Y1010.bin) on a forum here yesterday) and find 2.0 to be a real joy compared to the old one. With a 19" widescreen monitor, I find that I have room to leave the remote up on the left and the guide up on the right while still having a large enough picture to watch! I haven't yet downloaded it on my old XP laptop but will report back if THAT works.

Thanks Sling Team!

I just heear back from Slingbox technical about the problem I'm having since updating to 2.0, which is my bit rate dropped from 1mbps to 150kbpd. Their answer was to contact my router manufacturer and ask them how to get my router to match the update. I about fell out of my chair to see that they would not take responsibility for their problem and want me to speak with my router manufacturer (from Russia) about a problem that I don't even know why it's happening, other than I never should have tried this stupid upgrade. Slingbox 2.0 what a waist!!!

I have AOL as internet provider - when I try to update to the 2.0 version I get message that AOL does not support this. Can you tell me what to use or should I even bother?

October 29, 2008 2:15 PM

Hi Ellen:

That's pretty wonky (not that you have AOL as an ISP...which is only slightly wonky, but not pretty wonky) that the download or the installing would be disallowed by AOL.

Can you elaborate on your problem? When do you get the message? Downloading? Installing? How does AOL message you that a download or install isn't allowed?

When I launch Slingbox, I get the message that an update is available. When I click on that I get the message "file may be not supported by AOL. AOL will try to open as a text file if you choose to continue."

So I then click continue and get this next message: "The file is too large to open using AOL - please use another application."

I guess I would like to know what other application I can use? Tx.

Just try downloading it from the Sling website without your Slingplayer software open.. download the entire installation. Then install that download of Slingplayer 2.0.

Based on the number of replies by Sling Media Technical Support to issues raised here (few if any), I'd recommend that we go directly to them for help, rather than bitching about them here. If they get enough complaints on common issues, they may actually do something about them.

I want my favorites buttons back. The guide is nice, but it takes up too much real estate and my DVR has it built in. I'd rather have toolbar customizable buttons to quickly tune or better yet, perform some of the functions buried within the menus. This is how I had the last version set up and I was VERY disappointed to find the fav's gone. the online favorites did not import any of my previous favorites and is much less user friendly for setting up.

My biggest issue is with the custom code. I tried to edit a working custom code and load it with slingplayer and no change occurred. I messed around for a couple of weeks before finally trying to load it with the last version i had on an older pc. Lo and behold, the code took. Surprisingly enough, when i went back to my new pc with 2.0 running, the functions magically appeared. This leads me to believe that slingplayer actually uploads the custom code binary upgrade to the slingbox and slingplayer somehow accesses the custom codes there. I proved this out by trying to change a button on v2.0 with no effect. Copied the custom code to the old version and loaded it, it worked. I went back to v 2.0 machine and it now had worked there also (without re-loading the custom code via slingplayer confguration.

I am slinging to Taiwan. I have a Classic thru a Bell Expressview satellite box. Using 1.5.1 I was streaming at 960 kbps. everything was good but I was looking to get more IR codes so I downloaded the new Slingplayer 2.0. What a mistake. My bitrate immediately dropped to 75 kbps. I couldn't remedy this so I uninstalled Slingplayer 2.0 and reinstalled 1.5.1 I now stream at 500 kbps but have a split screen on most channels. I tried reinstalling 1.5.1 but it wasn't any better. Do they really expect me to contact my router manufacture. I wouldn't know how to begin explaining ny needs. What's going on???
I also prefer the old Favorites. It is much more user friendly.

I forgot to say that I also installed the latest firmware. Could this be the problem?

I have an original Slingbox (SB-100) which has been upgraded many times over the years as new software and firmware has been offered. Always without issue. This weekend I downloaded the 2.0 upgrade (non-beta) which installed (both desktop and firmware) without apparent issue. That is until I started watching the video. Quality had dropped notably, a little choppy and definitely not as sharp. The key indicator is that the bit rate, which previously was always between 2900 and 3000 kbps, now struggles to get to 1600 kbps. Spent time with tech support over the weekend (the guy was very knowledgeable). He went through all the steps I had already covered, modifying the various SlingPlayer Encoding options, re-installed the firmware, disabled the video buffer, etc...) After a while he became particularly interested in my Verizon router, noted the make / model / firmware rev and then opened a real support case. Said I would be contacted with 3 business days.

This new release is a piece of junk and I have had to revert to v1.4.

Main complaints:

1. Poor video quality compared to 1.4.
2. Picture will not fill the screen properly no matter what zoom mode I use.
3. Custom buttons from my old remote missing.
4. Sky+ remote not displaying properly (buttons missing text).

I fail to understand what on earth Sling have been doing or how this got released when it is clearly substandard and buggy.

Did you try 1.5?

  • When asking for setup help please include whether you are using a PC or Mac and
