SlingCatcher Hands on Review - Sling Projector

SlingProjector is the software companion for the SlingCatcher. With SlingProjector, you can select anything on your screen and have your SlingCatcher display it on your TV:

  • An Internet video
  • A movie player showing your latest video
  • A photo application displaying a slide show of your pictures
  • The latest creation you made with your presentation software
  • A window from any software application
  • and even more. Basically, what you see on your PC screen is what you can project!

It's easy to select what you'd like to have SlingProjector and SlingCatcher display on your TV. You can use any of these three modes:

  • Full-screen mode: everything on your screen displays on your TV
  • Selection mode: you choose what to display using SlingProjector's intelligent selection tool
  • Privacy mode: stops transmissions from SlingProjector to your SlingCatcher, so only you see what's on your screen

SlingProjector is a simple application that'll transmit, or "project," video and images from your PC to your SlingCatcher ... so your SlingCatcher can show them on your TV.

To start the SlingProjector application:

  • Choose Start > All Programs > Sling Media > Launch SlingProjector

If the SlingProjector icon is in the Windows Tray:

  • Click it, and choose Open SlingProjector.

Once launched, you see the SlingProjector application. Click the center button to connect to your SlingCatcher.

If more than one SlingCatcher is available on your network, then you need to choose a SlingCatcher from the directory list.

Two ways to transmit images from your PC:

You can transmit your entire PC screen using Project entire screen mode.

You can transmit just a window on your PC screen, a portion of a window, or a specific feature within window (such as a video player), by using Project window mode.

Moving your pointer near the edge of a window selects the entire window.

Moving your pointer within a window highlights features within the window.

The portion of the window that SlingProjector is going to transmit is highlighted in color (see image below). If the selection isn't what you want, just move your pointer until the area you want is selected, then click. If you're not able to select a specific object or area, click and drag a rectangle around the area of interest. SlingProjector will transmit whatever's within that selection rectangle. Once you click an object that SlingProjector has selected -- or when you release the mouse button if you're dragging a selection rectangle - the color of the highlight rectangle changes, indicating that SlingProject is transmitting that selection. You can re-select another object (or area) at any time.

Want a closer look? Try the SlingProjector Video Zoom controls:

To quickly stop images from being transmitted from your PC:

  • Click Privacy mode.

To disconnect from your SlingCatcher:

  • Click the center button again, or exit the application.

Note: The SlingProjector background service icon remains in the tray unless you click it and stop it from running.

PC audio versus audio on your TV: remember that the audio settings on your PC have no effect on how your TV plays audio from SlingProjector.  Make sure that your TV's audio volume is turned up, and that the proper audio inputs are connected to your SlingCatcher.

My Results:

In tests, the Sling Projector works very well.  I had mine connected to a 65" Mitubishi LCD TV, so the resolution on that size of a TV leaves a little to be desired.  I probably would not watch a full screen movie with it on my television, but if I want to watch a short video, a photo slide show, or a YouTube video, it's awesome!

What I like best about it is that I don't have to download something and convert it for my computer or DVR.  I can just click on the video and watch it immediately.

The projector also could come in very handy for training purposes.  You could train a whole classroom of people on any subject all at one time.  There's a whole variety of practical uses for the Projector.

At this time, unfortunately, the SlingProjector software is only available for Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista, and is not currently available for Macintosh.

I can't believe SlingProjector REQUIRES XP SP2!!! God I hate that service pack and I maintain all of my computers without that horrible piece of programming. Why can't you make a version that DOES NOT require SP2?

Just like my XBox360... this is useless to me because of the SP2 requirement.

And I was so excited about getting this SlingCatcher. :(
Back to the store the whole thing goes....

I'm also very disappointed that I can't share a folder on my PC that's full of .avi movies and access them directly from my slingcatcher.

I think the projector is just good for Youtube and the like quality. There's gotta be a bandwidth, necessary speed for much higher quality video. Thanks.
