Please note minimum requirements below for device software version on your BlackBerry device. Please contact your mobile service provider for questions regarding upgrading the device software on your BlackBerry device.

If you have a Blackberry that is only a CDMA device, like the 8830 you are out of luck. At this time no CDMA Blackberry will work with the Sling Player.

Here is the list of what you need to have.

Slingbox Requirements:

  • Slingbox is required to use SlingPlayer Mobile
  • Slingbox needs to be remote viewing enabled
  • SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry works best if the Slingbox Software is up to date. To make sure that your Slingbox is up-to-date, be sure to download and install the latest version of SlingPlayer Desktop on your home computer and connect to your Slingbox. If an update is available, it will be installed at that point

System Requirements:
  • A PC on your home network with SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows installed for:
    • Setting up Internet Viewing on your Slingbox
    • Managing Slingbox and Mobile Favorites with your Sling Account
  • A high-speed (broadband) Internet connection of at least 256Kb upstream speed at home

Note: SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows is required for creating and editing your Mobile Favorites lists. If you have a Mac OS computer, you are welcome to download and use SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry, but you will not have access to Favorites within the application.

 Device Requirements:

  • A supported BlackBerry smartphone with 3G wireless service and/or WiFi Internet connectivity, as well as the following minimum device software versions. (To check your BlackBerry device software version, select Options from your home screen, then select About. Third line shows the device software version installed.)
    • Bold – minimum 4.6.0.0 and above; optimal at 4.6.0.167 and above
    • 8900 – minimum 4.6.1.0; optimal at 4.6.1.92 and above
    • 8820 – minimum 4.5.0.0 and above; optimal at 4.5.0.110 and above
    • 8320 – minimum 4.5.0.0 and above; optimal at 4.5.0.81 and above
    • 8220 – minimum 4.6.0.0; optimal at 4.6.0.174 and above
    • 8120 – minimum 4.5.0.0 and above; optimal at 4.5.0.110 and above
  • For more information on how to check for and install available BlackBerry device software updates, click here.
  • Network download speed of 120 Kbps (or higher)
  • 2 MB free memory on device to install

As always remewmber, additional charges may be applied by your mobile service provider; an unlimited data plan is strong recommended for SlingPlayer Mobile usage. Please check your mobile service data plan.

You might want to take the graphics from the international page since it doesn't mention a carrier: http://uk.slingmedia.com/go/blackberry

Also, the EDGE-only 8100, 8110, 8300, 8310, 8800, and 8810 will work unofficially.

Will cdma be supported anytime soon?

As has been covered elsewhere, there is a platform issue with the 8130, 8330, and 8830 which prevents SPM from streaming. RIM is working on the issue and if and when they resolve it those models will be supported. Support for the Storm is being worked on.

The 2 MB free memory requirement is quite a bit. On my first test I had to uninstall a program to free up memory for the Sling Player. Is there anyway to install it on the add on MicroSD card?

  • When asking for setup help please include whether you are using a PC or Mac and
  • if you are using the Standalone Slingplayer or the web based setup program.

Quoted directly from the Verizon Wireless website.

"This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services and/or redirecting television signals for viewing on laptops is prohibited."

Does this mean that we will never be able to use SlingPlayer for Blackberry on the Verizon Network?

We're working on SPM for the Storm and if and when RIM resolves the issue for the 8x30 models we'll support those as well. The rest is between the user and Verizon as to the user agreement.

Since you are working SPM for the Storm does that mean RIM has made some progress on the firmware updates?

Not yet, but we expect an update relatively soon.

The Sling.com web-based SlingPlayer is very much not universal. It is a browser plug-in, basically the engine out of the desktop SlingPlayer repackaged as a plug-in. So it is tied to the OS and specific browsers.

The BlackBerry player is already Java, that's the development environment, but it is specific to the BB.

A 'universal' player really isn't viable. Mobile Java is very weak and the performance hit would be huge writing something generic to run on all devices and not using the device APIs. And the end result would be lacking - we tailor the UI to the device and its capabilities, and we build specific resolution support into the client for the layout, etc. Anything generic is going to be a lot more of a compromise.

I had a treo with Verizon for 3 years, and jumped off the deep end in Dec and purchased a Storm. I ran SPM on the treo for 3 years, without any issues at all downloading data over the data network. There was one time several years ago that's somewhat related, I was watching my slingbox using the treo tethered into my PC as a 'dial up network' connection for like 4 days straight when I was on a business trip and I got cut off by Verizon. Took me an hour on the phone until I finally got a 'network specialist' who would neither confirm nor deny that I had hit the cutoff threshold, but either way, I was back online within a couple of hours. Other than that, I've run SPM on my treo for years, and never once had any issue w/ Verizon. Granted, I never watched for more than an hour or two at a time (didn't want to push my luck), but I figured I could plead ignorance and ask for forgiveness if there was ever an issue... Can't wait until the Storm supported version comes online, was very disappointed when I switched to BB to find that SPM wasn't available (yet)....

    :(

I'm in the process of leaving Verizon (7 years w/ them) and after checking the price for AT&T, I decided on Sprint as my next carrier. Their service will be adequate for my area, however, my main use will be slinging!

I'm disappointed that most of the Blackberry Phones are either AT&T or Verizon as per the "20s" moniker.

Megazone, would you know if any of the Sprint "30s" series be added anytime soon? i.e. Blackberry 8830, Blackberry Curve 8330 or Blackberry Pearl 8130.

(I'm told that Sprint will be carrying the Blackberry Bold about summer 09).

    thanks!

Hey MegaZone - Any updates on the client software for the CDMA BB Curve? Once that's working do you think the same software will work with the forthcoming Niagara from Verizon? Thanks!

Any updates on the progess for the Storm? A potential ETA maybe? : )
