Dish Network ViP 922 SlingLoaded DVR Demonstration - 2009 International CES

Echostar and Sling Media made a big splash at CES with the with the announcement of the ViP 922 SlingLoaded HD DVR, probably the most innovative DVR to come down the pike since TiVo launched the Series 3 some time ago.

The ViP 922 is the first DVR to combine a satellite receiver, DVR, and Slingbox technology under the same roof. The tile based UI, combined with the radically new touchpad remote control, allows the user to navigate the guide and other funtions more like a PC desktop instead of a traditional AV device.

I'll let Tony from Dish Network give you the full tour:

After the video, Tony was nice enough to give me a mintue or two hands on with the new touchpad controller. It does still need a bit of refining, but I'm pleased to report that it works better than you may think, although it does take a minute to get used to it. With a bit of practice, I can easily see how this is a much better way to navigate an interface and channel guide.

I had to chuckle a little when I saw the Dish Network wireless monitor; only because it reminded me of Sony's original Location Free TV concept. The difference here is that Dish Network's monitor is high-def, and will hopefully be a lot less expensive. It should be anyway... LCD prices across the board are much cheaper now than they were at the early part of the decade.

All in all, the ViP 922 SlingLoaded DVR is an exciting look at what Slingbox technology can do for you when integrated into existing products, like satellite receivers. And if I know Sling Media, there'll be a lot more to come down the road.

What do you think of the Dish Network ViP 922? Post your comments below.

All I want to know is when is it going on sale. I need one - I live in Africa and depend on my slingbox/slingcatcher for any real TV. However, with the excpetion of HBO/Showtime and my wife's soaps anything worth watching comes on at like 02:00am. The ability to time shift would truly make slingcatcher worth while instead of one step above netflix and just a nice thing to have.

Did they say what they used to control the slingbox for the Sling Monitor? Is it a standalone remote or is it touch screen? Did the show you the remote for it?

About a month ago Dish Network sent a video to my VIP722 raving about the virtues of the Slingbox Pro-HD. So I purchased one and installed it last week. I thinks it would have been more appropriate to then say in the video, it will also be availble in a new model, the 922 and would be available if I wanted to wait for that receiver. I could have replaced my 722 (leasing it) with the 922 and probably have saved some $$ over the cost of the stand alone SlingBox and also have had it in an intigrated receiver. Nice going Dish Network!

I remember buying a souped up Dell Inspiron 8600 about a month before they launched their XPS line of performance notebooks. Many people also bought the regular iPhone a month before the 3G was launched. I'm not saying it's fair, but it is reality. Technology advances, and new products are introduced all the time

I wouldn't say you've gotten the raw end of the deal though. There ARE benefits to the PRO-HD that the 922 won't have. For example, if you were to someday opt for cable over satellite, or switch satellite providers, your PRO HD will work just fine. Also, your PRO HD can connect to your arial, your Dish Box, and another source simultaneously... something the 922 also won't be able to do. All said, the 922 does look very cool, but a 722 with a separate Slingbox is more flexible.

My 2 cents anyway.

I have been dying to add a sling box to my DVR 522, this is even better, the best of both worlds. Dish seems to be the only people that understand the dual tuner. I put one of these babies in my house, and then all my second tv's can watch a recorded program from either receiver and I can control it from anywhere.

1) Most importantly hopefully they don't do something dumb like charge for sling box service, if that is the case I will just go buy me a sling box.

2) Wifi integration, sling has it, hopefully the dish is wifi also.

3) UHF second receiver remotes again I hope, other wise its pointless

Being able to not have to plug into a telephone any more is a huge feature, I have been on VOIP for 10 years, I don't want to be stuck having to hope the voip dialout works, or I get charged extra (works most of the time).

Lastly, I WANT ONE NOW !!! I am a software engineer linux technology nut. Beta program whatever, I will take some bugs, I wanna start playing with the toys, and this is the first one that has looked compelling enough to make me want to upgrade.

Weird, I was reading online that the 722 had the Slingbox (and player and clip+sling) built-in! Ridiculous. (Unless they plan to upgrade it in the future?)

I wonder if the 922 will ever have the player/clip functionality.. I'm about to switch from DirecTV to Dish Network (so maybe I'll wait).. I'm also about to buy a SlingCatcher, but if I can have it all at once that would be a great plan.
(Though.. that's ironic because I want to have dish network so I can have indian programming, which I can have once I get a slingcatcher here plus find someone to host a slingbox in india somewhere.. hrmm.. ;^) I don't even need the slingbox capability in the 922, just the catcher.
I wonder how much power the beast uses on idle..
(I completely retooled this post, once I did more research. I didn't see a 'delete' button unfortunately, but, eh.. w/e!)

Just a comment on your wanting to put a slingbox on your DVR 522. I bought a slingbox about 3 weeks ago. I connected it according to the instuctions and found I could not use the remote to change the channels since the remote is radio controlled and not infrared. I contacted both dish network and slingbox and was told by both that this combination will not work. I have not yet returned the slingbox since I want to be able to use it so badly(husband is addicted to anything that has a ball in the game) LOL. I am trying to upgrade to the 622 or 722 and have been assured that they will work with the slingbox and sling guide. Oh, well. More money.

Not sure why they told you that. Others in the community seem to be using the primary tuner on the DVR522 (the IR one) using the Slingbox just fine. http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/thread/11785/Dish-DVR522-help-needed-plea...

Hi, thanks for the great info so far on the 922.

Regarding the 922 and Slingbox Pro HD question. Is there confirmation on what exactly the 922 will be able to stream to be viewed via the sling desktop or web? Will the 922 for sure stream in HD? Also how many inputs would it be able to stream in HD? -- Right now the Slingbox PRO HD can stream the HD from both its internal OTA input and another HD input.

Just bought a slngbox pro hd but now thinking of getting this 922. Just curious if the 922 would completely replace all of the Slingbox PRO HD functionality.

thanks all

I have had a Bell ExpressVu 9200 (rebranded Dish DVR) and SlingBox Pro for several years. It's been a pain in the butt that the second tuner on the DVR can't be controlled by the Slingbox. I wish they'd make some UHF emitters or a direct wired connection to control the second tuner already. It's not like Echostar/Dish owns SlingBox or anything...

I'm new to sling-anything and i'm waiting on a dish receiver that will allow me to watch hd programming on 2 hd tv's. i currently have the VIP 722 with 2 hd tv's. As you know, i'm only able to watch one hd tv in hd, the other hd tv is in sd. will this VIP 922 allow me to watch hd programming on both hd tv's?

November 15, 2009 4:58 PM

With the original 2 that are hooked up, no, HD on tv1 & SD on tv2, but...you will be able to watch HD on an additional (3rd) HD wifi tv that as far as i know will be exclusively available from Dish Network that syncs up to your home network. The new wifi tv will have a sling catcher built into it that will wirelessly receive programming from the slingloaded 922 receiver wherever it is in the house. If I'm understanding everything correctly, that is how you can have a total of two tv's HD on this receiver but still with tv2 in SD.

I assume that if you didn't want to buy one of Dish's HD wifi tv's that you could just buy a sling catcher and hook that up to an additional HDTV to have a 2nd tv having HD content (again, it would be a 3rd tv overall, but the 2nd one on the 922 system to have HD content). Such cool stuff-I'm hoping it's out by Thanskgiving, Christmas at the latest, but am mostly interested in the remote viewing capabilities on an I-phone or laptop outside of my home!

thanks for the information.

no problem-also, wifi HDTV's are NOT exclusively available from Dish, dumb assumption on my part when I saw one on cnet.com hooked up to the 922. I was reading my crutchfield electronics magazine this morning and wifi & other internet ready tv's look like they're going to be the next norm-pretty super pricy right now, but that's how they all start anyway

November 20, 2009 12:23 AM

Does anyone know when the vip 922 will actually be available? I've been hearing it's coming out for months. Thanks.

November 20, 2009 8:23 AM

From what I have heard they have been having problems with it and it may not be available until spring.

you can use the Slingbox with TV2 on the dual tuner boxes.
just do a search for TV2 IR COnverter. Dishstore sells it.
Hooks to the receiver where the remote antenna went, and the other side uses a cable from the slingbox IR out to the input of the little converter...
Works great
