SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Video Demonstration - 2009 International CES

With SlingPlayer Mobile for Blackberry hitting public beta late last month, all eyes are now looking to the iPhone as the next target for Sling's TV on the go solution. Sling Media showed off the iPhone client at Macworld just a few days prior, announcing that Sling Media will submit the iPhone SlingPlayer to Apple for approval by the end of the first quarter.

While we didn't get a chance to catch a demo at Macworld, Sling Media was also showing off an early version of the app in their booth at CES. Judging by the sea of people pumped up by what they saw, it looks like Sling's iPhone client will be in high demand when (or 'if' depending on Apple's how Apple's approval process goes) it hits Apple's App Store.

On hand to give us a good look at SlingPlayer for iPhone was Sling Media's Rick Carini, who was delighted to give SlingCommunity a tour of the in-development player.

I'd say the video speaks for itself. SlingPlayer for iPhone is shaping up well, and after a little hands-on time with the client, I'd say it feels right at home on the iPhone. Slingers are in for a real treat with this baby goes live.

Still in question is how Sling Media will price the iPhone SlingPlayer in the App Store, taking into account Apple's 30% cut of all app sales. Will SPM for iPhone be offered at a 30% premium for $38.95, will they offer it to Slingers at the same $29.95 as their other mobile apps, or will they split the difference at $35? What do you think they should do?

It's also up in the air how Sling Media will handle supporting previous SlingPlayer Mobile customers. Currently, any registration code for SlingPlayer Mobile will work on any handheld. For example, if you're on a Blackberry and then switch to Windows Mobile, you can migrate your SlingPlayer software to the new phone. It's unclear if the iPhone version will offer the same flexibility. More to come on this front...

WANT WANT WANT!

Happily pay whatever, just hurry and get it to Apple and be sure to TELL THE WORLD when you do submit it so we (blogs) can all pressure them to approve it.

Also happily sitting in the beta program waiting with my jailbroken iphone to test if they'll allow me...

NOT SOON ENOUGH!!! Let's get it out there for purchase ASAP. I'll pay whatever it costs to have it on my iPhone! Since I switched from my old HP PDA to iPhone, I've only missed one thing...Slingbox!

I'll be happy to be a beta tester if you like....anything to speed up the process of finding it in the app store.

Why did he say they were running the app on 3G, when it was clearly on wi-fi? Nonetheless, it looks great, and I am eager to get it on my iPhone!

It could easily have been a slip. CES is a wireless mess, and while I do know they were trying to run Wi-Fi for their demos, I remember they were having loads of problems with it.

They had several of their demos on cellular networks when their Wi-Fi wasn't working properly, which is also terrible during the show. It's probably hard to remember which you're using at any moment, since both were rediculously slow.

Well, I have to say. Given Orb is $10, Joost is free, Ustream is free and Hava is making their app free. Any more then $10 will really p off a lot of iPhone folks waiting for Sling support. Can I hear some $10 love? $30 really, just look around at the store. Do you really want to be laughed at???

I've been waiting for the Slingplayer for iPhone ever since I switched from my Treo 650 (yes, it worked fine on the 650 with the Kinoma player codecs across EDGE) last summer. Please work faster!

-Given the history of this product evolution, and Apple/Slings/Streaming Apps Policy at App Store, I will NOT hold my breath, and only hold comfort that this is not vaporware; so now I search for a new term that is more optimistic than "vaporware-like", yet less pessimistic than "killed off due to circumstances beyond our control"...

How many demos of this application is that now? When was the first one again?

I think the Duke Nukem team is working on the iPhone app. All kidding aside - the iPhone dev(s) should be embarassed. Given the specs, a single developer could have whipped this up and had it out the door a year ago, easily. Hell - I'm not a great programmer, but given the specs I'm pretty confident *I* could have gotten it out the door already. This is why DRM is possibly the worst evil perpetrated on consumers ever, period. And Apple themselves are part of this problem.

Now that the iPhone 3.0 beta was released today, I wonderi f that is going to slow down SlingMedia to submit their iPhone app at the end of this month and try to re-jigg it for 3.0 OS?

Any word out there?
