I was hoping for true DD5.1 with the PRO-HD.... It already has the digital coax input into the PRO-HD - so I guess I don't understand why they don't just use the "right" technology instead of a gimmicky one...
Sling Media Demos SRS WOW HD Audio for SlingPlayer - 2009 International CES
It was just prior to CES that we found out Sling Media would be integrating SRS WOW HD audio technology into SlingPlayer. Expected to be initially available for the Slingbox PRO-HD streaming to SlingPlayer 2.0, SRS WOW HD may just be the thing you're hoping for to bring some extra kick to your Slingbox experience.
Sling Media's Dallas Grove was on hand at CES to tell us more about it...
After the demo, this SlingCommunity Editor did manage to get a little hands-on ears-on time with SRS WOW HD in SlingPlayer. With Dallas switching back and forth between having SRS WOW HD on and off, I can say the sound was certainly more expansive with SRS WOW HD enabled.
I'm not sure I can go as far as calling it "better" after this short time with it. Along with that more expansive sound it seemed a little over-processed, and also had that "in a cave" echo that sometimes goes along with this kind of audio processing. Still, I'll hold out final judgement until its actually available. There were several modes (Movie, Music, etc) I didn't get to try that may dramatically alter how it sounds.
On the plus side, I think the expansive (and notably louder) sound SRS WOW HD provides would do a world of good for SlingPlayer Mobile, especially if you're often listening in noisy environments. Here's hoping this feature finds it's way into future builds.
Best of all, using SRS WOW HD appears to be optional. So if it turns out the mucho expansive sound just isn't for you, you don't have to use it.
