Menus While Streaming
Touching the iPhone screen while streaming will bring up the main on screen menu for SlingPlayer. The options here are:
- Favorites: Takes you to your favorites
- Remote: Brings up the remote for your connected device
- The next two buttons change depending on your device. If you are using the built in tuner on a Pro or ProHD, you'll see the option for "Keypad" and "Last Channel." If you are connected to say, a Tivo, these menu items change to "Guide" and "DVR" ("DVR" for a Tivo brings up Tivo Central).
- Options: This menu item gives you the following controls:
- Audio Only
- Switch between standard quality and high quality video
- Help
- Letterbox/Normal
- Change Device
Each sub-menu has a back arrow that will take you back to the main menu, or you can touch the screen again to close it. The main menu will disappear after a few seconds, or you can touch the screen and it will disappear immediately. The submenus require user interaction to close.
In the Remote control, your controls obviously will change depending on the device. When in that menu, you have several options and you can swipe left or right to bring up additional remote buttons that don't fit on the screen.
D-Pad - The "D-Pad" (short for Display Pad) is SlingMedia's term for the On Screen Display controls for DVRs and other AV equipment. The "D-Pad" brings up a transparent On-Screen display with an arrow pad allowing you to do such things as move up/down/left/ right, etc as well as other controls for the device like Page Up or Page Down, record, etc. You also get a button that takes you to a keypad so you can enter channel numbers, directly. In my opinion, this is one of the coolest features of this application. It allows you to easily navigate DVR screens with buttons of a reasonable size yet you can still see what you are doing easily enough. And, if you press a button and hold it down, you get a little pop-up telling you how many commands are being sent.
So, say you have a list of shows on your Tivo and the one you want is 6 shows down from the top. Simply press the down arrow while in your now playing list and hold it until the "6x" popup appears and release. You can then watch as you'll see your selection move to that show. It's really a nice feature.
