How come there is no manual video option, I stream HD remotely (on Windows) however the Web Version of the Mac Client does not allow manual video settings on Resolution, so its stuck in low res. Would be good to have manual setting.
Getting to Know the Web Based SlingPlayer for Mac Public Beta
Categories: PRO-HD Mac Sling.com
Sling Media has officially released a beta version of their web based SlingPlayer software for Mac OS X! This player can be found by logging on to beta.sling.com and choosing the "Live TV" option (or go to: http://beta.sling.com/sling_player). Both Safari 3 and Firefox 3 are currently supported.
If you're a Mac owner, you'll want to take a little time to get to know this new web based SlingPlayer. Below I'll give a brief overview of the player, as well as give you a few configuration tweaks you might need.
No Support for Legacy Slingboxes
As is the case with the iPhone software, the 'Legacy Slingboxes' (meaning Slingbox models Classic, AV, and Tuner) are not supported on the Mac version of the web based SlingPlayer. It's important to note that unlike the iPhone SlingPlayer, they will not work at all in the new web SlingPlayer for Mac.
As I write this, I have not determined a way to modify the plug-in to allow it. I've been told that the firmware on the legacy boxes is not compatible. These boxes will show up in your list of Slingboxes with a yellow dot next to them, but you will not be able to connect to them.
Installation
Installation the Web SlingPlayer for Mac plug-in is simple enough if you are running Firefox 3 or Safair 3.2.1. Follow the instructions and accept/trust the plug-in, etc. You'll be up and running in no time.
If you are running the beta version of Safari 4, you'll discover the Web SlingPlayer plug-in won't install. So, you'll have to trick the website into doing what you want.
To do this, go into Preferences in Safari. Go to Advanced Settings and click the checkbox that says "Show Develop Menu on Menu Bar".

This will give you a menu in Safari called "Developer." Using this menu, change the "User Agent" to be Safari 3.2.1, then load the Web SlingPlayer page and install the plugin.
What this menu does is fool the web page into thinking you are using Safari 3.2.1 and not Safari 4. The funny thing is that once you install the plug-in, you no longer need to change your user agent back to the older version of Safari. It runs just fine with Safari 4.
What You Get Using the Web Based SlingPlayer
The big advantage of the Web Based SlingPlayer (WBSP) for Mac users is that we now have a way of streaming in HD from our PRO HD Slingboxes! We also can take advantage of the program guide, as well as a 30 minute buffer. These are all things unavailable on the standalone Mac client. The image quality in HD is quite impressive utilizing H.264, and I believe Sling even uses the QuickTime engine for rendering.
At this time, features are pretty similar to those on the PC Web Based SlingPlayer. You can view your remote, as well as watch the video in either a window on the web page or in full screen. There is no way, at this point in time, to have a "pop-out" video window that you can resize to whatever size you want.
There's also a link to Facebook so you can let all your friends on Faceboook know what you are watching on Sling.com.
It's Beta, So Give Your Feedback
As of this writing, the Web Based SlingPlayer is a beta release. What this means is that things might not work correctly; you may experience crashes and other problems.
Here are a couple of issues with this first beta version that I've determined:
- Streaming is capped at 600 kbps for PRO and SOLO models. I have been told this is a temporary cap in place until a different problem gets fixed. There's no ETA on the fix, but I'd expect it soon. Just keep in mind that your video and audio quality will not look all that great - especially on the LAN.
- For certain configurations of the PRO HD, streaming will also be capped at 600 kbps. This will affect a very small number of users. Most users will not notice this and will stream in HD. Unfortunately, I'm one of those who has such a PRO HD configuration and can't show an image of the beautiful picture!
- You will need to log in with your password each time you access your Slingbox. The plug-in is not yet fully integrated with your Sling.com user account.
- You may experience crashes. I've seen a few, as have others. If you do crash, then just start your browser up and try again.
Since it's a beta, it also means that Sling Media wants your feedback. There is a feedback tab on the site that will take you to their feedback page, allowing you to post bugs, feature requests, etc. Doing this is a great way to provide some input into the program. If you post enough good bugs, who knows, maybe you'll be noticed as a good beta tester and be invited into private programs in the future.
Conclusion
If you've ever wondered what it was like to test a truly "beta" version of software, this plug-in will give you a good feel for what Sling Media's beta testers go through before every single Slingbox or SlingPlayer version is released. You get to see the bugs, comment on features, and give input that helps shape the final product. You'll see it improve before your eyes. It's really kind of exciting.
Finally, Mac users with PRO HD Slingboxes can finally stream in high definition. It's not ideal in that we don't have an actual client that can steam in HD, but it's certainly better than nothing. Perhaps the client will come at some point, but until then, this is a certainly a good start.

Well, then I would suggest this on the feedback site for Sling.com. Unlike most public beta packages that are almost complete before being released, this beta is really very early and very rough around the edges still. My understanding is that it will have the same capabilities as the PC version when it is finished.

Is it just me, or is everyone having no luck accessing the WBSP for Mac. I have tried three macs and two browsers on each. I get to the "discovering slingboxes" and then the browser quits. I was able to access the player once, two days ago (After a few crashes), but now I can not get through. I've just tried like 50 times and only get the crash.
Is there something I can do to make this work ?
I just tried and connected fine. But I've heard your problem from multiple people. Try going into the ~/Library/Internet Plugins folder and deleting the plug-in. Then let it reinstall. Different machines seem to end up handling it different ways. And post the feedback on the feedback site provided by Sling.

After much trial and error, I got this to finally work. What I had to do was access my SlingBox via IP/port rather than SlingBox ID. I witnessed along the way, several "502 Bad Gateway" errors and suspected it was either a server capacity error, or flakey software on their end.
So, I believe the feedback I will post is that my experience sees the WBSP for Mac missing some features (No pop-remote in full screen, can't change channels with keyboard, can't navigate the guide with keyboard), but that their server side needs a ton of work before it emerges from beta.
Too bad my "legacy" Slingbox AV (purchased about a year ago) couldn't get worked into the code somehow.

One big thing missing.
Only working in OS 10.5.x and higher.
Crying shame.....
Well, since 10.5.x has been out for around 2 years or more, I'm not surprised it doesn't support earlier versions. The good news is that 10.6 will soon be out and will be $29.00 to upgrade...

Did you turn on the developer method as outlined in this article ?
Yeah pays to read the whole article before blurting out false accusations. However, once I got it working under Safari 4.0 I was only getting Audio and the video was just a small icon at the top... ?

I too get the small icon but it does work in full screen.
Yeah, Just confirmed it works in full screen only, better than nothing for a Beta solution.

Actually, the video does show up in the release version of Safari 4. It's just in a teeny tiny window at the top of the screen! See where I have the yellow arrow pointing to in the attached screen shot! And SlingPlayer Web screws up the tabs in Safari 4 as well. They go away. Sad - it all worked fine in the beta Safari 4 builds...

It was working fine and then I upgraded to 4.0, thinking I could use the "user agent" method described here. But since upgrading I only get audio. I'm wondering if it's because it only offers Safari 3.2.3 as opposed to 3.2.1 as described here; Is there a way to get it to display 3.2.1? Maybe that will fix the problem.
i cant even connect. It shows up my Slingbox when i click on my Solo it gives me " connecting to *name of my solo* " and thats it. i left it for 30 minutes and nothin
i'm in Europe and my sling is at home in california , that might be reason why ? hope they're not pulling geo restricting bs.
After reading the article, I decided to test the WBSP for Mac.
I currently use Chrome as my default browser so I knew some work would be involved. After opening Safari 4.0.3 I pasted the link found in the article, it took me to a login screen where I entered my Sling Account credentials. The following screens were self explanatory which connected me to my different SlingBoxes. NOTE! A restart of the browser was requested after the installation was complete, After doing so I was asked to redo the complete installation again. I did and then logged back in and was taken to a a screen displaying all of my SlingBoxes. I selected the a HD Pro unit Firmware Ver 1.3.170 09/22/2009. After 3-5 seconds of elapse time videoappeared, I noticed the resolution was in SD format and went to full screen. It was working well I might add for SD. Returning to normal view I checked the bit rate and it was rock steady at 600 kbs. I selected the options tab and noticed there was a Video Quality tab, there are 4 main choices Minimal to Best. After testing them all I concluded that the choices were equal to the resolution options in any Sling product. 320 all the way to 1920. After selecting the Best option a checkbox for enabling HD is offered. NOTE! 2350 kbs was the bit rate once this option was selected. Now this was one of my only cons as I would normally would alot 6000 kbs to HD but the proxy option was not available. NOTE! This is also true of the latest SlingCather firmware. The remote and guide features work admirably there is a noticeable difference in channel switching, I am sure most users will opt for the Guide. After viewing some action movies, sports and a recorded documentary the overall quality was B+. At no time was there any anomalies or buffering which was a pleasant surprise as it is still a BETA. FYI SlingBoxes located in CA USA Remote User located in Stockholm Sweden. Mac OS X 10.5.8 Imac6.1. I will be testing Snow Leopard w. Safari 4.0 this weekend until then Keep SlingiN.....
