Interesting idea. I ran into the same problem and solved it by adding a second source to my slingbox AV for the TV with only one button defined-- power. Before I watch my tivo, I switch to that source and turn the TV on. It's a kludgy solution, but hey, $130.
How To Use Your Slingbox With HDMI Video Sources and Avoid HDCP Issues
Categories: Accessories Cable / Satellite / DTV Boxes TiVo, DVRs, Media Centers

For some time now, using a Slingbox with an HDMI compatible video source such as the SA-8300HD DVR, did not allow you to use the HDMI output, which is usually the preferred A/V hookup to your HD Plasma or LCD. Due to HDCP restrictions, if the device on the other end of the HDMI cable is not turned on, the DVR will shut down its other video outputs and therefore send no video to the Slingbox. The only way to use the Slingbox and HDMI is to leave the TV turned on, hardly a practical solution.
What is HDCP for? HDCP was put in place to prevent copying of protected shows, but the implementation on devices such as the SA-8300HD and TiVo DVRs is to shut down all video outputs unless the HDCP handshake is present.
To solve this problem, there needs to be a way to return a correct HDCP handshake to the DVR, even if the TV is not powered on. The solution which I've tested consists of two components - a 1X2 HDMI splitter and an HDFury, which is a module that can convert HDMI to other video formats.

The HDFury is the key as it is capable of returning a proper HDCP handshake to the video source.

The HDMI splitter is hooked to the HDMI output of the video source, which in this case is the SA-8300HD DVR. The first output from the splitter is connected to the TV. The second output from the splitter connects to the HDFury via an HDMI to DVI cable. The HDFury's output is not connected in my setup, but you could use it to drive a non-HDMI display. The HDFury does not require power since because it is powered from the HDMI connection.
Both the HDFury and the TV will return HDCP handshakes. The splitter passes those handshakes through to the DVR. If the TV is powered off, the HDFury is the handshake source. If the TV is powered on, the splitter decides which to pass to the input device.
The total cost of the components was around $130.00, including the cables and shipping. I purchased them from www.monoprice.com, which had a great return policy in case my experiment failed. Below is the list of the components I purchased. I went with a slightly more expensive splitter to have a better chance of success, but a lower end component may work as well.
| Component | MonoPrice # | Price |
| 1X2 PRO Seried Powered HDMI Splitter (1.3b ATC Certified) | 4921 | 59.75 |
| HDFury - DVI to VGA(RGB) Converter | 4559 | 57.15 |
| High Speed HDMI 1.3a Category 2 Certified Cable 28AWG - 6ft | 3952 | 3.55 |
| HDMI DVI Cable 28AWT - 3ft w/Ferrite Cores | 2661 | 2.82 |
With an HD-Pro, why not just use SA8300-->Component Cables ---> Slingbox ---> Component Cables ---> TV.
You could definitely use component to the TV. But HDMI is sometimes the preferred connection type.
Does the Tivo HD with a cable card in place of the SA-8300HD DVR present the same issues with HDMI handshaking? I'm about to purchase a new Slingbox Pro-HD and wonder if I will have to deal with the same issues you describe here. Thanks.
I'm not really sure - only have experience with SA boxes. From what I've read on the TIVO forums, I think it does have the same issues. Someone with a TIVO might be best to give a definitive answer.
The tivo S3 definitely does; that's what I'm using. I would be very surprised if the tivo HD doesn't have the same problem, as it's just a cost-reduced version of the S3.
I have a usa slingbox pro hd unit in beijing and have it connected to an LG TV Model 47LB7RF First question is can this unit take the apartment cable input directly and does the slingbox have a built in tuner? so that I can remotely change channels without having the tv on? Right now I have the cable attached directly to the TV and from the Yellow Red and White outputs I am getting the signal into the sling box. but the List of LG supported products I can not find the 47LB7RF so I can setup the remote Infered so I can change channels remotely when out of town? Can you help?
The Pro HD will take a direct cable connection. See here for all the connection possibilities.
That being said I have no idea what the cable in Beijing puts out or if the box can scan then.

Can't you just connect the HDMI from the cable box to the TV, and component cables from the cable box to the SlingBox?
I am not using HDMI on my SA8300HD but the component, s-video, and composite outputs all work simultaneously.
If you are using component cables from the DVR to the TV, then you should not have any HDCP issues at all. The issues only arise if you are connecting the DVR to the TV with an HDMI cable. In your setup, you could use any of the other video outputs on the cable box to connect to the Slingbox.
Can't you use HDMI to the TV and component to the SlingBox at the same time, though?
That will work as long as the TV is powered on. If the TV is powered off, the HDCP handshake is not returned to the cable-box and it will disable the component output.
So, you can use component no problem if you have no HDMI cable, but if you plug in an HDMI cable, it disables the component???
That is really stupid. It should be illegal to do that.

I have the exact opposite problem. With the TV on (HDMI) the cable box disables output from the Component cables. When the TV is off, then things work.
My workaround is to use S-video when the TV is in use (I'm remote slinging, so HD doesn't make a huge difference).
I am using the S-video from the cable box to the slingbox and also using the composite output to an older TV in another room. You may be correct that the cable box only outputs one HD output at a time which may not be related to HDCP protection. Will try to get some time to test the component output.
I have the same issue. So I searched here to solve it. Thanks to all for sharing such nice different ideas. I like this site as I got my solution from here.
I will surely follow these ideas.
I will visit this site in future too.

What happens if you have the HDMI cable hooked to an a/v receiver first? I have the SA4250HD right now and I do not have this issue. I can use the Slingbox Pro-HD connected to my cable box component outputs and have the HDMI connected to my a/v receiver without having to turn on the TV. So if I change to the SA8300HD will I have the issue of having to turn on the TV. I am a Cablevision customer if that makes a difference.
I have the slingbox classic. The workaround that I found was to hook the coaxial, and hdmi to my TV. I use s-video for the slingbox to the cable box. I get the copy protection menu when I first fire up Slingplayer, however, once I hit exit on the remote, I can watch and surf normally. When I do watch from my TV, I still get all the HD channelS. It's a small inconvenience but, seems like the best solution all things considered...
Have Slingbox Pro HD and SA 8300HD also have experienced same problem....cannout use HDMI output at same time as component output from SA 8300 and HDCP causes error message when Tv is turned off. I was thinking of using the component only from SA 8300 to Slingbox then component output to a (component to HDMI converter) then to TV as HDMI. I have no experience with such converters though. Anyone ever use one? I saw this on line
