Sling Media Releases SlingPlayer for Mac OS X 1.0.8, Debuts Hybrid Scanning for PRO HD
Sling Media has let loose a new SlingPlayer for Mac OS X, dubbed 1.0.8. We're told this is a minor release, but there are a few new things here for Mac owners, and in a surprising twist, one of which isn't yet available for the PC. For starters, Sling Media has bundled the latest Slingbox firmware versions in 1.0.8, which should help alleviate some headaches for Mac only households that have, say, a SlingCatcher. On the new feature front, 1.0.8 marks the debut of hybrid scanning for the PRO HD, something owners of the high-def Slingbox (at least those with cable service) have been looking forward to. In the past, the coax input could only scan for analog OR Clear-QAM digital channels, which meant choosing between more channels or HD for most (or redoing your channel scan everytime you wanted to watch one or the other). Hybrid tuning allows the... More »

The Empire Strikes Back: AT&T Targets Place Shifting... Again
For those following the ongoing saga of AT&T changing and retracting changes to their wireless terms of use, it looks like the nation's largest wireless provider is at it again. AT&T just can't help but play with fire. It hasn't even been a month since they attempted to practically outlaw all place shifting on their data network. That didn't go over so well, and quickly pulled the changes after making an announcement that they were made "in-error." We had a feeling this wasn't over, but those who thought this was all behind us will be surprised to find out that some anti-Slingbox language has reappeared in AT&Ts Terms of Service. This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, redirecting television signals for viewing on Personal Computers ,... SlingPlayer Mobile Updates for Windows Mobile, Palm
Thanks to some reports sent in from community members, we've discovered Sling Media has quietly put up some new builds of SlingPlayer Mobile for both iterations of Windows Mobile, as well as their Palm OS player. Sling Media isn't saying what's new or different about them, and that typically means one of three things: Whatever changes have been made aren't visible or are nothing to get excitied about. Whatever has changed is dependent on something that's either unannounced or unreleased. The mobile programmers are also waiting on approval from Apple for the iPhone Player, and had nothing else to do but change build numbers on these players to look productive. Whatever the reason, the new mobile players are available for download now at Sling Media.com. Download the new version, give it a spin, and let us know if you see anything different: SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Pocket PC 1.6.0.114 (US)... More »
SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Still Awaiting Approval, Despite Rumors
Ah, the Internet... where the lines between actual news and unsubstantiated wild rumors get blurred. Like yesterday, when BoyGenius reported (based off a tip from an "anonymous tipster") that AT&T pushed Apple into rejecting Sling's iPhone SlingPlayer from the App Store, spelling doom for any iPhoner's desire to Sling TV to their iPhone. We had an opportunity to speak with Jay Tannenbaum at Sling Media, who was able to shed some light on the current situation. It turns out anyone stating that SlingPlayer has been denied, or confirmed for that matter, is only spreading rumors. "Here are the facts," he says. "We submitted the iPhone SlingPlayer to Apple a few weeks ago, and we're in contact with them (Apple). There's nothing to report yet. It's a great app, and there's nothing more we would like to do than have it be available in the App Store." Part of the problem... More »

AT&T Reverses Course, Retracts Changes to Terms of Service
The SlingCommunity team saw the statement issued earlier by AT&T that they were reversing course and retracting the changes they made to their terms of service, including the part that would basically prohibit the use of Slingbox or any other placeshifting device on their network. However, we weren't ready to say the world was peachy again until AT&T actually changed the text on their website... something that happened just a short time ago. Apparently their webmaster was on an extended coffee break. With bad news hitting Slingers left and right the past few days, it's feels good something finally went our way. Still, even though they may have lost this time, we have a feeling the empire's going to strike back. More »

AT&T Modifies Wireless Data Terms, Outlaws Slingbox and Other Placeshifting Devices
Looks like nation's largest wireless provider is running scared that SlingPlayer for iPhone will be approved in the near future. As a result, some changes have recently made their way into the Empire's Wireless Data Terms and Conditions to outlaw all placeshifting devices from their network. From the AT&T Wireless Data Terms and Conditions : " This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, customer initiated redirection of television or other video or audio signals via any technology from a fixed location to a mobile device , web broadcasting, and/or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices and/or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition devices is prohibited." The fact that verbage has been added just before SlingPlayer landed on the data hungry iPhone implies that it's targeted directly... More »

ZNF: Echostar Shows T2200S SlingLoaded DVR at Cable Show
The nitty gritty on EchoStar's new tru2way, SlingLoaded cable box was unveiled in their announcement before the show, but our old friend Dave Zatz stopped by their booth at the National Cable and Telecommunications Cable Show in Washington DC to take a peek and get some hands on photos. It doesn't look that much different from the ViP 922s satellite model, only this one doesn't appear to have the cool trackpad remote control we saw in the demonstration at CES . See more at ZatzNotFunny Update: Dave was kind enough to send over some additional photos just for the SlingCommunity. Hit up the gallery above to check them out, then head over to ZatzNotFunny to see the rest . More »
Update: SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Only for Slingbox PRO, SOLO, and PRO HD Users
Sling Media has just put up a new page on their website announcing an $50 upgrade incentive for Slingbox Classic, Slingbox AV, and Slingbox Tuner customers. What's interesting is at the bottom of the page, it reads: Sling Media is encouraging customers who own these earlier versions of Slingbox to upgrade to Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD to take advantage of next generation software and services that will only be supported when using the most current Slingbox and SlingLoaded products. Future software includes the highly anticipated SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone software launching soon. Current Slingbox functionality will not be affected if you choose not to upgrade, but software like SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and future services yet to be announced will only be supported for customers using Slingbox SOLO and Slingbox PRO-HD products or forthcoming SlingLoaded products. See the page here: http://www.slingmedia.com/go/upgrade Curious is the omission of the Slingbox PRO... More »

SlingCatcher Update Adds Near-HD and Network Streaming
Sling Media recently took the wraps off their latest update to the SlingCatcher hardware, dubbed ".57," adding in several fixes and enhancements as well as two major feature additions that's sure to please many SlingCatcher owners. The two most important additions, higher quality streaming from the Slingbox PRO-HD and support for media playback from network shares, were first shown at the 2009 International CES show earlier this year and was expected to be released sometime in the first quarter. The near-HD streaming upgrade allows the SlingCatcher to receive a higher resolution (1280x540) stream from the Slingbox PRO-HD. The network streaming upgrade allows the SlingCatcher to playback digital audio and video files directly from SMB network shares or shared folders on a Windows XP, Vista, or Mac OS X 10.5 computer. The SlingCatcher update coincides with the just released 2.0.2 upgrade of the SlingPlayer software , which includes an important PRO-HD... More »

CBS App Signal Approval for iPhone SlingPlayer?
The mobile gurus over at jkOnTheRun are looking ahead to the impending submission of Sling Media's iPhone SlingPlayer to the App Store for their approval, a process which has historically been unpredictable. Their gut has been telling them not to get too optimistic, particularly since a SlingPlayer in iPhone could hurt Apple's bottom line as TV watchers turn to their own TV services instead of iTunes. Thankfully, that bleak prediction is looking up. CBS managed to get Apple's rubber stamp on their own app that streams clips and full episodes of popular shows to the iPhone. Does that mean SlingPlayer for iPhone will also get the green light? Read the story at jkOnTheRun More »

Slinger Hit With $27,000 Data Bill
Every Slinger knows how great it is to catch up on a football game while waiting in an airport, after hours during a business trip, or in the case Wayne Burdick from Illinois, catching a Bears game while waiting for his cruise ship to set sail. What wasn't so great for Wayne, however, was the surprising $27,000 statement from AT&T, his wireless data provider, sent him. Of course, Wayne first assumed there was an error or fraud, so he called AT&T to have the charge investigated and reversed. After being told the charges were legitimate, it turned out Wayne was billed at international roaming rates while using his Slingbox at port in Miami, which at two cents per kilobyte of data over two and a half hours of slinging is a lot of coin. It turns out that Wayne's data card connected through the cruise liners onboard network, which would... More »

Sling.com Adds Facebook Connect, Updates Friends on What You're Watching
Kicking off what we're told to be "the first phase of a broader social viewing strategy," Facebook users who watch video on Sling.com now have a new tool at their disposal to share even more details about their personal lives with their online friends. The new feature, dubbed Facebook Connect, allows those viewing video from Sling.com to directly interact with their Facebook page and do things like update their status with what they're watching, post to their Facebook wall, and share videos directly with friends. For example, if you're watching The Simpsons on Sling.com, you can update your online status to say: "- Billy Bob is watching "The Simpsons" on Sling.com. Watch along: sling.com/link " Facebook connect also works for those watching their home TV via Slingbox through the online SlingPlayer. The status update is roughly the same, but it will say "live" and won't provide a link for others... More »
Slingbox and SlingCatcher Headed to Australia in March
Australians have everything: Foster's on tap everywhere, kangaroos, and plenty of crocs. The only thing notably absent has been Slingbox, but that's finally about to change. In late March 2009, Slingbox and SlingCatcher will be coming to Australian retailers, and locals will finally be able to watch a little TV while on walkabout. "We've had a strong response from Australian consumers from the moment we launched the first Slingbox in June 2005 and we are very pleased to be entering the Australian market today," said John Gilmore, president and CEO of Sling Media, Inc. Sling Media has appointed Digital Products Group as the distributor for Slingbox in the AU, who also distributes products from Argus and BeyonWiz according to their site. The Australian launch will consist of four different Sling Media hardware Products: Slingbox SOLO ($349 AU), Slingbox PRO ($499 AU), SlingCatcher ($499 AU), and SlingLink Turbo 4-port (price TBD).... Viacom Programming Coming Soon to Sling.com
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal and other online sources, Sling.com owner Echostar, and Viacom, the entertainment company behind Nickelodeon, MTV, VH1 and several other networks, have inked a distribution deal that will make Viacom programming available through the Sling.com video portal site. Details regarding the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, as well as exactly what Viacom programming, other than some content from MTV networks, will be available through the Sling.com site. This Viacom deal gives Sling.com programming that's not currently available on competing sites, like Google's YouTube and NBC's Hulu.com video site. As Peter Kafka pointed out in his blog , MediaMemo, Sling already redistributes the majority of NBC's rival video site, Hulu, except for the two shows Viacom licenced to Hulu in a one-off deal. However, according to information from Kafka, the two shows that were once exclusive to Hulu, Comedy... More »

Top Sling Media Executives Leaving Company
With the sale of Sling Media to Echostar more than a year behind them, Sling Media founders Blake and Jason Krikorian are leaving the company. Not only are Blake and Jason heading out, but Sling Entertainment Group, the group that manages Sling.com, heads Jason Hirschhorn and Ben White are also leaving the company at the end of February. Peter Kafka at MediaMemo has the story: "The top executives at Sling Media, the people who brought you the Slingbox “place-shifting” TV gadget and Hulu competitor Sling.com, are leaving Echostar (SATS), more than a year after they sold their start-up to the satellite TV company for $380 million cash..." Echostar Announces First Sling Loaded DVR
Sling Media is taking some of their secret sauce out of the separate set-top accessory and is offering it up as an integrated solution in other set-top boxes. Echostar, here at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is showing off the very first "Sling Loaded" DVR in history. It may be starting in the Echostar booth, but word on the street (meaning what we're hearing from those manning the booth) is that Sling's stuff is open to any satellite, cable, or other set-top maker who wishes to license it. Now, off to find some (insert your provider here) reps to assess the wait time. Of course, if you want it when it first hits, all you need to do is pick up a Dish Network brochure and make the call. SlingCommunity's got a full video demo of the Echostar 922 straight from the show floor coming soon. Stay... More »
