Other Release Highlights: Improved video quality Online Slingbox registration added; plus users can store their Slingbox ID online for easy access Improved Slingbox Setup Assistant: New setup and configuration screens are streamlined and easier to use Users can rapidly cycle between Fullscreen (4:3), Widescreen (16:9),... SlingCatcher Fondled by Gizmodo - Videos To Prove It.
It was just last week Sling Media announced that SlingCatcher, the long-awaited gadget for viewing your Slingbox, computer, and other media on a TV, would be available for pre-order . Anytime you see a pre-order, you have to assume that means the real deal isn't all that far behind. Evidence that 'soon' may actually be 'soon', the Gizmodo-ers happend to get a little hands on time with Sling Media's upcoming wonder-gadget, and by the looks of the names on the video screen, it looks like Sling's doing the showing off. If what we see here is indeed the final, it looks like the three core features we've been waiting for are accounted for and present: SlingCatcher for TV - Watch your home TV sources on Any TV SlingProjector - Watch any computer media on your TV SlingSync - Load/play digital media to a storage device connected to the SlingCatcher What... It's TRUE! SlingCatcher Now Available for Pre-Order
A long time ago, at a Consumer Electronics Show far, far away... Sling Media announced a little product called SlingCatcher ; a revolutionary device designed to connect and stream your Slingbox (meaning your home television sources) to any TV set in or out of the home. That was all the way back in early 2007. We happened to get another look at SlingCatcher at the 2008 CES , and were no less impressed by what SlingCatcher has to offer the Slinger. Any TV is magically transformed to your TV, plus other nifty abilities like the ability to playback digital audio and video from a disk or USB drive, or even display content directly from your computer screen. We were told that SlingCatcher's feature set was a moving target, so it's not clear yet what abilities it will have at launch until we get some hands on time. Starting today, SlingCatcher... More »

Slingbox PRO HD Now Available for Pre Order
It looks like Slingbox PRO HD is getting close to going prime-time... like really close. Starting now, you can pre-order Sling's fully high-definition Slingbox for quick delivery as soon as they're available, which means Sling is on track to hit their initial expected date of Q3 . First shown at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, the Slingbox PRO HD will be the first Slingbox to offer up video streaming at full high definition resolutions. Sling Media's previous top-notch Slingbox, the Slingbox PRO, offered HD compatibility through the HD Connect, but could only stream at SD resolutions. We can't say if anything has changed from what we saw in our video demo at CES until we get some quality hands-on time with the final product. What we do know is that the MSRP has dropped $100 from the (lofty) $399 price tag announced at the beginning of the year. Is... More »

Echostar/Dish Network DTVPal Reviews Hitting Web
It's been a long wait since the "TR-40" Digital to analog converter first appeared at Sling Media's booth at CES. But, the light at the end of the tunnel is that after a physical design overhaul and a complete identity change , our new "DTVPal" (as in friend, not Europe's PAL TV system) should be available in about a week. As always, those who've gotten their mittens on them early are already posting reviews and pictures around the web. For a thorough look at DTV Pal and tons of pics hit up the full scoop from the boys over at SatelliteGuys.US . On the video front, our long time friend (and former go-to guy at Sling) Dave Zatz has hands-on videos galore of the DTVPal. SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Takes One Step Closer to Reality
With a mobile screen so large and pretty, it was only a matter of time. Over the weekend our good friends at Sling Media showed off SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch in the form of a pre-alpha proof-of-concept software demonstration. According to our friends at Engadget , Sling hasn't yet been accepted into Apple's developer program , making what's been seen so far as an under-the-radar app for jailbroken devices. Don't get your hopes up though... it won't get released until Sling can do so legitimately. Could we see SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch before the end of 2008? More »

New Echostar DVR With Baked In Sling Goodness, Dish UHF-to-IR Adapter Shown
Based on a report from the SatelliteGuys, who were present during the Team Summit in Nashville, it Sling Media parent Echostar has some new products planned for 2008 that (as expected since the acquisition) builds Sling technologies into a Dish Network product. Though nothing has been 'officially' unveiled, the report talks of a new new version of the Dish Network ViP722 (dubbed the 722s), that bakes SlingCatcher and Clip+Sling functionality right in. Word of whether it can also stream out (like a Slingbox) wasn't specifically mentioned. Hit up Engadget for their take, and view the original report from the SatelliteGuys.US. Though not getting as much notice around the web, ZatzNotFunny specifically called out a certain piece of gear that's sure to get some love from Slingbox owners suffering from TV2 withdrawl. With the new UHF-to-IR adapter, users can connect the TV2 tuner on Dish receivers right up to their Slingbox.... More »
EchoStar Brings SlingModem to Market for Cable Industry
We've heard quite a bit about Sling Media's SlingModem prior to the company's aquisition by EchoStar, and still saw it on display at the Consumer Electronics Show back in January. Since then, however, news on the Slingbox/cable modem hybrid has been non-existent.... at least until now. In a press release from EchoStar this morning, EchoStar Technologies LLC (a subsidy of EchoStar Corporation... formerly part of DISH Network) announced that its entering the cable industry with the CableLabs Certified® DOCSIS® 2.0 SlingModem at CableNET® in New Orleans, La. From what we can tell, nothing about the SlingModem has changed since the last time we saw it. Check out the gallery for photos of the SlingModem . The real story here is EchoStar's desire contribute to the enjoyment of television services for consumers in general, whether they get that television from cable or satellite. Sling Media had always been operator agnostic, and... More »

Sling Media/EchoStar TR-40 DTV Converter Update
During the 2008 Consumer Electronics show Sling Media and Echostar showed off a new government coupon eligible DTV converter box for the US digital TV transition. Much of the basics were covered in this article around that time, but now that coupons are starting to show up in mailboxes across the country, folks are looking for an update on the status of this little box. Thanks to a tip from from community member Malouff and a status update from Dave Zatz over at Sling, we've finally got a bit more to share about the TR-40. No doubt timing is the first thing on people's minds, and according to Dave the TR-40 is still slated for a June delivery, and appears to be coming along nicely despite undergoing a few changes from what we saw in January. The biggest change comes to the form factor and style of the physical box... More »

Engadget: SlingCatcher Now "Sometime in 2008?"
Engadget received a tip today that SlingCatcher's release date may be pushed back from Q2 until "sometime in 2008" based on an alleged e-mail communication between a Slingbox owner and a Sling Media employee. "We've been waiting to get our hands on the SlingCatcher ever since it was announced at CES in 2007 (re-announced at this past CES) but it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer -- Gregg Wilkes, Sling's VP of sales, has said the product won't be released this quarter as scheduled, but rather sometime later this year. Sling hasn't made this announcement publicly, though: Gregg simply emailed a would-be customer his apologies, saying Sling was committed to providing a "compelling and enjoyable user experience and value proposition," and that the SlingCatcher is still being refined." RCR Wireless News: Mobile Q&A with Blake Krikorian
SlingPlayer Mobile is regarded by many mobile operators as the thorn in their pricing plans. All-you-can eat data plans structured some time ago were designed in a period when there were few compelling mobile applications that would consume a lot of data, but usage of high-speed data networks is on the rise with better mobile web browsers and the growing rise of streaming video on mobile phones. Consumers that pay for a high-speed mobile data plan is a good thing for operators, but unlike days past, consumers are finally starting to use the services they pay for. RCR Wireless News sat down with Sling Media CEO Blake Krikorian to talk about Sling Media's impact on the mobile sector with SlingPlayer Mobile, why it's a compelling application for consumers, why provider video services aren't taking hold, and how SlingPlayer Can actually help mobile providers. Can Apple Say 'No' to SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone?
Harry McCracken over at PC World has asked some of the tough questions in the days following Apple's announcement of the iPhone SDK , which opens the doors for third-party commercial applications on iPhone. Presumably, one could expect Sling Media to take a hard look at bringing Sling-shifting TV capabilities to the touch friendly phone. However, Harry's analysis brought up the question about what will be forbidden in the Apple iPhone Apps store. Unlocking programs, porn, and privacy invading apps will be forbidden (obviously), but the non-descriptive rule about "bandwidth hogs" raises some concern for Sling owners. Streaming video would be considered by most to be a bandwidth hog, which could mean that SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone may not be allowed to be distributed through the Apps store. Whether or not a Wi-Fi only version of SlingPlayer would be allowed, but such a program would seem limiting once a 3G... More »
