Sling Media Updates Symbian S60 SlingPlayer, Adds Support for New Devices

Posted to blog Sling in the News on November 17, 2009 10:44 AM

S60 owners should take notice. Sling Media's been hard at work on a new build of SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian S60 , which, along with the typical helping of minor fixes and patches, adds support for new handsets like the popular Nokia E71, E71x, and brand new E72. Furthermore, Sling also says they expect this build to play nicely with all 3rd edition Symbian S60 devices, even if they're not on the officially supported list. All 3rd edition users are encouraged to download the 30-day trial to see if it works on their handset. Officially supported list: Nokia N96 Nokia N95 8GB Nokia N95 Nokia N85 Nokia N82 Nokia N79 Nokia N75 Nokia N73 Nokia E75 Nokia E72 Nokia E71x Nokia E71 Nokia E65 Nokia E63 Nokia E52 Nokia 6790 Surge Nokia 6120 5th edition devices won't have any luck with this build, but Sling says they're hard at work... Sling Unwraps Updates for PC and Mac SlingPlayer

Posted to blog Sling in the News on October 28, 2009 7:52 PM

Sling Media may seem to be spending more time on their web-based version of the SlingPlayer software , but it looks like they've also been giving the desktop player a little love as well. New builds are available for both SlingPlayer for PC and SlingPlayer for Mac, taking each iteration up a minor tick. Based on what we've gathered, Sling's not adding the world here. SlingPlayer for PC 2.0.4 and SlingPlayer for Mac 1.0.10 appear mostly to be a maintenance upgrade intended to squash a few bugs in the player and firmware, update the remote control base for Macs, and fix some connectivity problems. The PC player, however, has gotten a few extra goodies that are worth mentioning. For starters, users of specific netbooks (namely certain hardware revs of Dell's Mini 10 for now, like the Dell Mini 1010) may be able to take advantage of a new hardware acceleration... More »

Sling Media Releases SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry 1.0.0.11 (Updated)

Posted to blog Sling in the News on July 30, 2009 7:57 PM

Slingers with compatible BlackBerry models are being treated to an upgrade today, as SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry 1.0.0.11 just hit the scene. You can download it directly from Sling Media's website, or accept the auto-upgrade prompt the next time you log in. Like most minor upgrades, there are no new major features or functions compared to 1.0.02, but Sling has given the mobil BlackBerry player some touching up in the visuals department. The UI has gotten some work all the way around in the icons department, and you'll definitley see some clearer up, down, left, right arrows. There's also some good news for those with wide-screen format BlackBerry devices like the Bold or 8900. 1.0.0.11 includes better 16:9 support when true widescreen material is being received. Sling is reminding legacy Slingbox owners (Classic, Tuner, and AV) that their Slingboxes will no longer be officially supported on this and future BlackBerry... More »

SlingPlayer Mobile Headed to Palm Pre?

Posted to blog Sling in the News on May 22, 2009 3:58 PM

The boys over at Engadget happened to be peering through a a Sprint-sourced page out of a Pre slide deck, and caught Sling Media's name in a section titled "Showcase Apps." We haven't gotten any wind of a Pre app already in development, but perhaps the cool cats over at Sling HQ are getting pretty good at keeping secrets these days. Of course, it's also just as likely this slide may just mean that the Palm Pre can handle 'showcase apps' like SlingPlayer should Sling decide to create a SlingPlayer App for it. We won't know for sure until Sling gives up anything concrete, but what we can tell you is that for a phone that isn't even out yet, there's already some pretty strong demand for a Pre SlingPlayer. It's (as of this writing) currently winning our " Where should Sling go next poll ." [Via Engadget ] More »

Posted to blog Sling in the News on October 8, 2009 11:53 AM

According to a report at THR.com , Sling Media's VP EMEA, Stuart Collingwood, had serveral interesting facts to share. For starters, Sling Media's speard across the European continent continues. Right now, users 15 different countries accross Europe have access to the Slingbox and serveral forms of SlingPlayer, including the iPhone SlingPlayer that went global a few weeks ago . Sling's aspriations don't stop there, however. They're currently planning on spreading into Eastern Europe and the Middle East sometime in the next year, though as of now there's no indication on exactly when in the next year that may happen. Also interesting is some use statistics Collingwood shared. According to him, even though the Slingbox enables remote TV viewing, some 70% of consumers claim they primarily use the Slingbox within the confines of their own home. That, he says, is a number that's increased 40% from the year prior. What we... More »

Sling Media Plays Domain Name Switch-A-Roo, Adds Online Setup and Watch Live

Posted to blog Sling in the News on October 1, 2009 2:57 PM

If you're in the US, things are looking a bit different over at Sling Media's website this week. Not only has the domain name changed from slingmedia.com to Slingbox.com, but they've given the site a look-and-feel refresh and added several new convenient customer features. Click for Full Screen First, gone is the dark and mysterious "black on dark-gray on black" motif in favor of a lighter, cheerier "red and gray" look similar to the style of their website a few years back (which coincidentally was the inspiration for SlingCommunity's current look). The new look extends from the homepage to the product and support pages, which are now easier to navigate and more informative than ever. Click for Full Screen On the new features front, Sling's taken the wraps off their online setup utility and placed a gigantic button to it off the homepage. This feature has actually been around a... Engadget: SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone 1.1 Coming, Adds 3G Streaming for Non-US Customers

Posted to blog Sling in the News on August 11, 2009 12:26 PM

Engadget's Ross Miller reported last night that Sling Media has released an updated iPhone/Touch SlingPlayer to the App Store for approval. According to them, version 1.1 fixes a few annoyances with the 1.0 app (16:9 content will actually stretch to the screen edges rather than having to use the 3GS zoom hack ) and also adds a few things. If we're to believe what we're hearing from those who've obtained the new release from "unofficial" channels, the new player is "more like 2.0 than 1.1." For starters, Dish Network Slingers can now navigate their set-tops using a native touch browser rather than the Slingbox video stream and remote control, giving Dish users a faster and more enjoyable remote experience. The final word is that SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone 1.1 will allow for 3G streaming to those who are not located inside the United States. There's no guarantee that feature will... More »

V1.1 of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Hits the App Store - No 3G Streaming for Anyone

Posted to blog Sling in the News on August 20, 2009 9:25 PM

The word on the street last week was that Sling was looking to push through an updated version of the popular, yet controversial, iPhone SlingPlayer app through the App Store. Rumor had it v1.1 would offer up enhanced control of Dish Network receivers, full screen support for 16:9 material, and 3G streaming capability for anyone outside of AT&T's US cellular empire. The new SlingPlayer app has just hit the App store, and it turns out all had been true... except for the 3G part apparently. According to our friends over at Engadget , Sling has apparently submitted a 3G version for use outside the US (contrary to what we've heard through the grapevine, but have been unable to verify), but is still held up in Apple's "keep-ya-guessing" approval process. In any event, there's an updated app waiting for you ($30 for new users, free for those running 1.0). Give it... More »

Google Voice Rejection Ignites FCC Probe Into AT&T/Apple iPhone Exclusivity Agreement

Posted to blog Sling in the News on July 31, 2009 11:07 PM

Earlier this evening, word spread that the Federal Communications Commission is investigating Apple and AT&T regarding the recent rejection of Google's Voice application for the iPhone. At the heart of this investigation is the very nature of the exclusivity agreement between AT&T and Apple, and whether or not that agreement is hurting consumers, limiting choice, and hindering innovation. According to reports, the FCC sent a letter to each of the three involved companies, in which contain all of the tough questions Slingers have been asking since the SlingPlayer app for iPhone was apparently stripped of any ability to use AT&T's 3G network in order to be approved. Here are just a few of the tough questions being asked: Does AT&T play a hand in which apps ultimately get approved? Does Apple and AT&T have standing contracts or agreements in regards to what apps can use the AT&T 3G network? What... More »

SlingPlayer for PC 2.0.3 Live, Officially Brings SlingPlayer 2.0 to the EU

Posted to blog Sling in the News on May 13, 2009 5:38 PM

Hot on the heels of Sling Media's iPhone SlingPlayer comes a new build for desktop PCs. SlingPlayer for PC 2.0.3.508 includes some various bug fixes, but doesn't add in loads of new changes from a feature perspective shy of the hybrid-tuning support on the PRO-HD (catching it up to the Mac player that was released last week). While it may not be exciting to US customers, those across the pond will have a different perspective. SlingPlayer 2.0.508 includes localization for the EU (French, Spanish, Italian, and German) making this the official debut of SlingPlayer 2.0 in Europe. Until now, our friends overseas were still on the bufferless, less feature packed 1.x version of SlingPlayer. Download SlingPlayer for PC 2.0.508 More »

EchoStar Details Third-Party Licensing Plan for SlingLoaded Technology

Posted to blog Sling in the News on July 28, 2009 4:01 PM

EchoStar already alluded to licensing out SlingLoaded technology during their debut at CES , but today marks the first time EchoStar has offered up detailed plans to anyone looking to design products around EchoStar/Sling Media's solution. Until today, EchoStar's SlingLoaded technology has been kept in-house, offering up the EchoStar 922 to Dish Network and recently announcing a Tru2way set-top for cable. Licensing SlingLoaded would allow third-party manufacturers to integrate Sling technology into set top boxes, TVs, and other media devices, not to mention further EchoStar's desire to make "place-shifting as common as DVRs," according to an EchoStar spokesperson. No licensees have yet been named, but word is EchoStar is going after some of the largest set-top manufacturers in the cable biz, namely like Motorola, Cisco, and Pace. What impact this would have on the continuation of retail boxes is unclear, but we foresee ongoing interest in standalone Slingboxes at retail... More »

Sling Media Releases SlingPlayer for Mac OS X 1.0.9

Posted to blog Sling in the News on June 26, 2009 4:43 PM

Sling Media may be pushing the new web-based SlingPlayer for Mac a lot these days, but it doesn't appear they've completely abandonded the stand-alone desktop client either. SlingPlayer for Mac OS X 1.0.9 has just been released and is now available for download at Sling Media's website. We don't have any official word as to what's included here since the noted release highlights are identical to those for the 1.0.8 release last month , but we do know this version contains the latest firmware builds for the PRO-HD, SOLO, and Pro, as well as a few unspecified fixes. We'll update this entry if we're able to get our hands on any additional information on this new release. Download SlingPlayer for Mac OS X 1.0.9 Now More »

The Register: Baseball, Yes. Sling Media, No. - AT&T Playing iPhone Streaming Favorites

Posted to blog Sling in the News on June 22, 2009 11:45 AM

AT&T has been facing some harsh criticism over their continued push to disallow placeshifting to the iPhone over their 3G network , going so far as modifying their Terms of Use ( twice ) to specifically ban the practice. Yet, not even a month later, Apple gives the MLB "At Bat 2009" app for iPhone free reign over the 3G network, letting iPhone users stream Baseball games to their handsets. Rik Myslewski' recent post to The Register goes one step further, indicating that AT&T is playing favorites when it comes to who gets to use the 3G network for streaming video. What's worse, thanks to AT&T's exclusivity agreement for the iPhone, it looks like they're pretty well protected says Rik. Read the full article at The Register What do you think about AT&T playing favorites? Should the MLB streaming app also be denied 3G access? More »

Web Based SlingPlayer for Mac Public Beta Released

Posted to blog Sling in the News on June 4, 2009 11:00 AM

Sling Media first talked about their OS X web player for Sling.com back at CES , which was poised to bring HD streaming and other 2.0 features to Mac owners. Their lofty goal of Q1 has come and gone, but Sling has finally opened up their efforts to OS X users in what they're calling a "sneak peek" of the OS X Web Player Plugin. It's available for download now at Sling.com. According to the company, the Web Based SlingPlayer for Mac is beta software lacking features and functionality that will be present in the final product. However, that doesn't mean there isn't anything new for Mac owners. In fact, the web player beta delivers the core functionality Mac based Slingers have been hoping fo, like HD streaming, live pause, Sling Accounts, and the program guide. As beta software, there are still several missing features and limitations that Slingers should... More »

SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry Arrives

Posted to blog Sling in the News on December 29, 2008 10:43 PM

"Before the end of the year." That's the mantra BlackBerry owners have heard over and over again since the 2008 CES show back in January. It's still 2008 (barely), but it least they made it. A public beta of SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry is out NOW . BlackBerry owners have been eagerly waiting to watch Slingbox streams from their mobile phones for well over a year. It's been a long road, but at least some of them (GSM BlackBerry users) get to join the "I watch TV on my cell phone" fan club, which until now had been exclusive to Windows Mobile, Palm, and Symbian users. BlackBerry owners on CDMA networks like Verizon and Sprint still have to hold out hope whatever platform glitch preventing SlingPlayer from working will get resolved in the future. While the official launch isn't until at least midnight Eastern, members here in the community have... More »
