Update: SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Only for Slingbox PRO, SOLO, and PRO HD Users
Sling Media has just put up a new page on their website announcing an $50 upgrade incentive for Slingbox Classic, Slingbox AV, and Slingbox Tuner customers. What's interesting is at the bottom of the page, it reads: Sling Media is encouraging customers who own these earlier versions of Slingbox to upgrade to Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD to take advantage of next generation software and services that will only be supported when using the most current Slingbox and SlingLoaded products. Future software includes the highly anticipated SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone software launching soon. Current Slingbox functionality will not be affected if you choose not to upgrade, but software like SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and future services yet to be announced will only be supported for customers using Slingbox SOLO and Slingbox PRO-HD products or forthcoming SlingLoaded products. See the page here: http://www.slingmedia.com/go/upgrade Curious is the omission of the Slingbox PRO... More »

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Still Awaiting Approval, Despite Rumors
Ah, the Internet... where the lines between actual news and unsubstantiated wild rumors get blurred. Like yesterday, when BoyGenius reported (based off a tip from an "anonymous tipster") that AT&T pushed Apple into rejecting Sling's iPhone SlingPlayer from the App Store, spelling doom for any iPhoner's desire to Sling TV to their iPhone. We had an opportunity to speak with Jay Tannenbaum at Sling Media, who was able to shed some light on the current situation. It turns out anyone stating that SlingPlayer has been denied, or confirmed for that matter, is only spreading rumors. "Here are the facts," he says. "We submitted the iPhone SlingPlayer to Apple a few weeks ago, and we're in contact with them (Apple). There's nothing to report yet. It's a great app, and there's nothing more we would like to do than have it be available in the App Store." Part of the problem... More »

Sling Media/EchoStar TR-40 DTV Converter Update
During the 2008 Consumer Electronics show Sling Media and Echostar showed off a new government coupon eligible DTV converter box for the US digital TV transition. Much of the basics were covered in this article around that time, but now that coupons are starting to show up in mailboxes across the country, folks are looking for an update on the status of this little box. Thanks to a tip from from community member Malouff and a status update from Dave Zatz over at Sling, we've finally got a bit more to share about the TR-40. No doubt timing is the first thing on people's minds, and according to Dave the TR-40 is still slated for a June delivery, and appears to be coming along nicely despite undergoing a few changes from what we saw in January. The biggest change comes to the form factor and style of the physical box... More »

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Takes One Step Closer to Reality
With a mobile screen so large and pretty, it was only a matter of time. Over the weekend our good friends at Sling Media showed off SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch in the form of a pre-alpha proof-of-concept software demonstration. According to our friends at Engadget , Sling hasn't yet been accepted into Apple's developer program , making what's been seen so far as an under-the-radar app for jailbroken devices. Don't get your hopes up though... it won't get released until Sling can do so legitimately. Could we see SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch before the end of 2008? More »

Echostar/Dish Network DTVPal Reviews Hitting Web
It's been a long wait since the "TR-40" Digital to analog converter first appeared at Sling Media's booth at CES. But, the light at the end of the tunnel is that after a physical design overhaul and a complete identity change , our new "DTVPal" (as in friend, not Europe's PAL TV system) should be available in about a week. As always, those who've gotten their mittens on them early are already posting reviews and pictures around the web. For a thorough look at DTV Pal and tons of pics hit up the full scoop from the boys over at SatelliteGuys.US . On the video front, our long time friend (and former go-to guy at Sling) Dave Zatz has hands-on videos galore of the DTVPal. Check out the unboxing now... ... then head over to ZatzNotFunny for parts 1 through 4 of this full look at DTVPal. [Thanks to Malouff... More »

Sling Media Releases Slingbox Firmware Update
Sling Media today released an a new firmware update for all Slingboxes, fixing some minor networking issues that could cause remote viewing to stop working. "It resolves the issue with some router models where Port Forwarding / UPnP settings are lost after a router’s WAN IP address changes", said Dave Zatz in this post on the SlingCommunity Forums . "If you've experienced this issue and Remote Viewing has started working again after a power cycle without making any changes to the Slingbox, updating your Slingbox’s firmware should prevent it from reoccurring ." Officially out of Beta as of today, Sling Media is recommending that all Slingbox owners apply the update. Mac users that are running the latest version of SlingPlayer for Mac and have applied the firmware in that build already have these enhancements. Only those running a Windows version of SlingPlayer and Mac owners who have not upgraded to... More »
AT&T Modifies Wireless Data Terms, Outlaws Slingbox and Other Placeshifting Devices
Looks like nation's largest wireless provider is running scared that SlingPlayer for iPhone will be approved in the near future. As a result, some changes have recently made their way into the Empire's Wireless Data Terms and Conditions to outlaw all placeshifting devices from their network. From the AT&T Wireless Data Terms and Conditions : " This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, customer initiated redirection of television or other video or audio signals via any technology from a fixed location to a mobile device , web broadcasting, and/or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices and/or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition devices is prohibited." The fact that verbage has been added just before SlingPlayer landed on the data hungry iPhone implies that it's targeted directly... More »

Sling Unwraps Updates for PC and Mac SlingPlayer
Sling Media may seem to be spending more time on their web-based version of the SlingPlayer software , but it looks like they've also been giving the desktop player a little love as well. New builds are available for both SlingPlayer for PC and SlingPlayer for Mac, taking each iteration up a minor tick. Based on what we've gathered, Sling's not adding the world here. SlingPlayer for PC 2.0.4 and SlingPlayer for Mac 1.0.10 appear mostly to be a maintenance upgrade intended to squash a few bugs in the player and firmware, update the remote control base for Macs, and fix some connectivity problems. The PC player, however, has gotten a few extra goodies that are worth mentioning. For starters, users of specific netbooks (namely certain hardware revs of Dell's Mini 10 for now, like the Dell Mini 1010) may be able to take advantage of a new hardware acceleration... More »

SlingPlayer Mobile for PocketPC / Smartphone Updated, Supports New Phones
Trying to keep up with the ever changing landscape of mobile devices, Sling Media has let loose an updated version of SlingPlayer Mobile for Pocket PC and Smartphone . This isn't the major re-write of the app that Sling Media has been hinting about in certain discussions here in the community, but instead an interim update to bring some Sling goodness to the swarm of new handsets that have recently hit the market sporting never-before-seen screen resolutions like 800x480, 640x480, 400x240, and 320x320. So which new devices should SlingPlayer Mobile now support? The list is long, but includes: Sprint Treo 800w (US) Sony Ericsson X1 (US & UK) Palm Treo Pro (US & UK) Sprint HTC Touch Diamond (US) Sprint HTC Touch Pro (US) Verizon HTC Touch Pro (US) Verizon Samsung Saga (US) Verizon Samsung Omnia (US) AT&T LG Incite (US & UK) AT&T HTC Fuze (US & UK) AT&T... Web Based SlingPlayer for Mac Public Beta Released
Sling Media first talked about their OS X web player for Sling.com back at CES , which was poised to bring HD streaming and other 2.0 features to Mac owners. Their lofty goal of Q1 has come and gone, but Sling has finally opened up their efforts to OS X users in what they're calling a "sneak peek" of the OS X Web Player Plugin. It's available for download now at Sling.com. According to the company, the Web Based SlingPlayer for Mac is beta software lacking features and functionality that will be present in the final product. However, that doesn't mean there isn't anything new for Mac owners. In fact, the web player beta delivers the core functionality Mac based Slingers have been hoping fo, like HD streaming, live pause, Sling Accounts, and the program guide. As beta software, there are still several missing features and limitations that Slingers should... More »

SlingPlayer 2.0.1.481 Out - Direct Connect Returns, Canada Gets EPG
Sling Media has let loose the latest update to the next gen SlingPlayer for Windows software, which is currently available for download from Sling Media's website or through the update tool within SlingPlayer. Aside from the typical firmware and minor bug fixes, one of the major additions includes the return of direct IP connections, giving users stuck behind strict firewalls and blocked from Sling Accounts the ability to connect directly to a Slingbox. We've also been told Canadian Slingbox owners are getting some love, and can now enjoy the same Electronic Program Guide services US customers have been using since the original debut of the next-generation software. Other Changes: SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0.1.481 includes firmware updates for all Slingbox models except Tuner, with Slingbox Classic and AV showing improved quality and performance, while reducing the frequency of split video issues that have been reported. The ATSC/QAM support on the Slingbox... More »

V1.1 of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Hits the App Store - No 3G Streaming for Anyone
The word on the street last week was that Sling was looking to push through an updated version of the popular, yet controversial, iPhone SlingPlayer app through the App Store. Rumor had it v1.1 would offer up enhanced control of Dish Network receivers, full screen support for 16:9 material, and 3G streaming capability for anyone outside of AT&T's US cellular empire. The new SlingPlayer app has just hit the App store, and it turns out all had been true... except for the 3G part apparently. According to our friends over at Engadget , Sling has apparently submitted a 3G version for use outside the US (contrary to what we've heard through the grapevine, but have been unable to verify), but is still held up in Apple's "keep-ya-guessing" approval process. In any event, there's an updated app waiting for you ($30 for new users, free for those running 1.0). Give it... More »

It's TRUE! SlingCatcher Now Available for Pre-Order
A long time ago, at a Consumer Electronics Show far, far away... Sling Media announced a little product called SlingCatcher ; a revolutionary device designed to connect and stream your Slingbox (meaning your home television sources) to any TV set in or out of the home. That was all the way back in early 2007. We happened to get another look at SlingCatcher at the 2008 CES , and were no less impressed by what SlingCatcher has to offer the Slinger. Any TV is magically transformed to your TV, plus other nifty abilities like the ability to playback digital audio and video from a disk or USB drive, or even display content directly from your computer screen. We were told that SlingCatcher's feature set was a moving target, so it's not clear yet what abilities it will have at launch until we get some hands on time. Starting today, SlingCatcher... More »

Engadget: AT&T issues official statement on SlingPlayer's 3G blackout for iPhone
One can only imagine the intense outpouring of hatred AT&T must have received from customers immediately following the announcement that the iPhone SlingPlayer will be not be able to stream video using AT&T's data network . While it hasn't exactly been declared by anyone that AT&T is to blame for the apparent lack of 3G support, they are the only one with something to gain by a Wi-Fi only SlingPlayer. It doesn't take much to come to this conclusion. Our friends at Engadget have managed to squeeze a statement out of AT&T regarding the 3G blackout: "Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network. The application does not run on our 3G wireless network. Applications like this, which redirect a TV signal to a personal computer, are specifically prohibited under our terms of service. We consider... More »

The Empire Strikes Back: AT&T Targets Place Shifting... Again
For those following the ongoing saga of AT&T changing and retracting changes to their wireless terms of use, it looks like the nation's largest wireless provider is at it again. AT&T just can't help but play with fire. It hasn't even been a month since they attempted to practically outlaw all place shifting on their data network. That didn't go over so well, and quickly pulled the changes after making an announcement that they were made "in-error." We had a feeling this wasn't over, but those who thought this was all behind us will be surprised to find out that some anti-Slingbox language has reappeared in AT&Ts Terms of Service. This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, redirecting television signals for viewing on Personal Computers ,...
