Yesterday we discussed in detail a Sling Media's patent submission [link] which implied they would have the ability to transmit ads to you over your SlingPlayer. You can read more about it here.
Since then we've had the opportunity to catch up with Dave Zatz of Sling Media to help shed a little light on this patent and their intentions.
Although the complete business model has not been revealed, Dave did confirm one thing we were suspecting, given the controversy of how such technology could be used.
"[Sling Media has] no intention of modifying the source placeshifting stream," according to Dave. "Sling's goal is to enhance and compliment content rather than negatively impacting your viewing".
Simply put, this means that Sling Media isn't looking to utilize technology that replaces, overlays your video, or shows you anything other than what you want to watch from your original source. So you don't have to worry about receiving anything in your placeshifted video other than what you're actually receiving at home.
On behalf of everyone here, let's thank Dave for clearing that up. I, for one, am glad I won't be seeing ads for an alarm system when I'm watching my security cameras... like the "dude" saying, 'Hey, this is a private residence man!"
