SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Takes One Step Closer to Reality

With a mobile screen so large and pretty, it was only a matter of time. Over the weekend our good friends at Sling Media showed off SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch in the form of a pre-alpha proof-of-concept software demonstration. According to our friends at Engadget, Sling hasn't yet been accepted into Apple's developer program, making what's been seen so far as an under-the-radar app for jailbroken devices. Don't get your hopes up though... it won't get released until Sling can do so legitimately.

Could we see SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch before the end of 2008?

I´m just one more person, from many people that wont buy the iPhone 3G if there is not the sling player in it..!!

Awesome! Can't wait!

I'm *really* sorry I missed the demo at WWDC. There were just too many good things to attend and I couldn't spare the time to come see this in-person. Put SlingPlayer for iPhone as one of my 'no question/must have' apps.

Hope the certificate issue gets resolved with Apple soon -- or they just open it up to everyone come July 11th.

Not that this is any special authority but a guy at Radio Shack says that the slingPlayer won't be approved for the IPhone because of being a data hog. He says that this is becoming a bigger issue than the hardware.

Anyone hear anything about this?

I wanna it now....

I'm more interested in when some of the UI advantages of the iPhone version of the Slingplayer will make it to the other versions of the mobile software! I've got a Windows PPC phone and the UI is clunky. It would be awesome to have something at least a little more like what the Iphone software can do.

I don't think att or apple has a choice in the matter of our data usuage. I hope they release this Friday.

Btw - Gwoodley, you icon is freaky.

Where is it?!? I've got the new iPhone OS, and iTunes 7.7 and downloaded 20 apps from the AppStore, but can't find the SlingPlayer!

Even if it only works on WIFI, I'd love to have it over my LAN.

Yeah, OK, so if the iPhone release is as timely as the Blackberry client we should have it in, say, 2011. Still waiting....

You're kidding right?

"Sling Media showed off SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch in the form of a pre-alpha proof-of-concept software demonstration."

Pre-alpha proof of concept means that exactly what it says. That's why you don't see concept cars on display at auto shows for sale at your local dealer a week later. Wink

Am I kidding? Only a little.

Sure, I know they showed an alpha release at WWDC. I didn't now it was "pre-alpha". I didn't even know there was such a thing as a "pre-alpha". Heck, I didn't even know they needed a "proof-of-concept". I mean, streaming to a Palm or Blackberry isn't enough "proof"? Roxio's Toast can stream. ElGato's EyeTV can stream. Sure, let's have another "proof-of-concept".

I'd be happy to volunteer for the beta.

Software Release Life Cycle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle

Sometimes a build known as pre-alpha is issued, before the release of an alpha or beta. In contrast to alpha and beta versions, the pre-alpha is not "feature complete". When it is used, it refers to all activities performed during the software project prior to software testing. These activities can include requirements analysis, software design, software development and unit testing.

Now you know... and knowing is half the battle. Smile

With iPhones selling like hot cakes, I think Sling can generate a lot of sales by having a player for it.

Anyway, what is the issue with Apple/AT&T ? Is it not the same as Youtube and it is included in the iPhone? AT&T networks should be able to handle a 128 kbit/sec video stream over 3G.

RE:Sebastian's Comment

Good point about the bandwidth comparison to YouTube, or some of the other media streaming apps already in the AppStore (like vSnax).

But I could speculate that one inhibitor could be that it would compete with people buying iTunes TV Shows and Movies for their iPhones.

I would still use both though, because I wouldn't be able to stream from my Slingbox while on an airplane.

I totally rely on my iPhone, my Tivo, and my Slingbox. I'd hate to have to choose between them. I can currently get content from my Tivo to my iPhone using TivoDesktop software, but Slingbox would be so much easier.

Sling has clearly been at the forefront of getting their client on all kinds of devices...and they obviously have it 90% working on the iPhone, so if it doesn't happen it'll be Apple's fault. Don't scr3w us Apple!

I have an idea for a good iPhone Application that Sling could do relatively easily.
One of the most popular apps for iPhone is called Remote. It allows you to use your iPhone to control iTunes running no a PC via WiFi.

As I'm about to get on my Excercise Bike and watching the news on my slingbox, I'm imagining that a Remote app for my SlingPlayer would be very handy about now, so I wouldn't have to watch commercials while I'm on my excercise bike...

Think about it guys...and make it happen!!
I recently got approved as an iPhone developer, but I'm not sure how I would go about this. Maybe we could start an open source project or something. This would be very handy.

I think SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone simply comes under the heading of "Just Do It!"
