SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Takes One Step Closer to Reality

With a mobile screen so large and pretty, it was only a matter of time. Over the weekend our good friends at Sling Media showed off SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch in the form of a pre-alpha proof-of-concept software demonstration. According to our friends at Engadget, Sling hasn't yet been accepted into Apple's developer program, making what's been seen so far as an under-the-radar app for jailbroken devices. Don't get your hopes up though... it won't get released until Sling can do so legitimately.

Could we see SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch before the end of 2008?

With Orb 2.0 being release to the app store, and their latest update allows streaming video over 3G as well as Wi-Fi.....The ball has been taken out of Apple and ATTs court, so all those haters who kept making that broad speculation were wrong. I knew they were wrong all along as I beta tested the Orb 2.0 app and the Live TV streaming is amazing. Once Sling finally gets theirs released, it will be even better. HDTV Slinging should be amazing! Lets get it ON Sling!

It's so odd that other software companies can produce apps for the iPhone in mere mos and have it on the app store so quickly but we yet to see a SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone.  I understand that Apple probably has something to do with this but if they're allowing Orb 2.0 app how come we SlingMedia is having a difficult time releasing their mobile app.   Doesn't make sense at all to me.

AT&T allows the SPM app on other cell phones, so this shouldn't be an issue

Apple allows apps like SPM i.e. Orb 2.0 on their iPhones, so this shouldn't be an issue

Sling Media has a pre-alpha app that looked pretty good to me - how long do we have to wait?

Yep, so it clearly is in Sling's court now.
They shouldn't have put out this teaser video if they're too busy to finish the client.

They just rolled out their Blackberry client, so I suppose they could be busy with bug fixes for that for a while.
And they never seem to keep the MAC OSX client up to date as much as they do Windows, so I still have low expectations about the iPhone client coming out any time soon. But my desire is still HIGH ;)

I'd even pay for it! So do it already.

December 22, 2008 9:22 PM

No question the reason this isn't out the door yet was because Sling wanted to finish the BB client first. As for the possible boost in sales, Sonos which is a wonderful company for home audio streaming, released a beautiful app which actually DISPLACES their own $300 controller. The app is perfect in every way and was written up in yesterday's new york times as part of an article on simplicity of technology. The interesting part was a quote from the CEO stating that the app clearly boosted hardware sales of their devices.

Hopefully Sling is listening. I am certain they will get a sizable bump if they execute on a strong iPhone app. I am optomistic we will get more concrete details at Macworld and/or CES.

December 22, 2008 9:39 PM

@dss: I hope you're right about seeing something concrete at MacWorld. I think most stuff demonstrated at CES is vaporware though - so much of it never sees the light of day.

It would be nice if Sling would at least announce something - they haven't. We just have this article that calls it a pre-alpha demo. I'm sure they've been accepted into the Dev Community by now. Heck if I've been accepted by now, surely they have.

SLING: if you need beta testers, let me know. I can send you my iPhone3G device-id.

There's now no progress or updates on the iPhone client, earlier in the year announcements about SlingPlayer including EPG has gone quiet with the beta programme just stopping. Here in the UK one major retailer is clearing SlingPlayers stock at 50% as end of line. SlingMedia is a very spcialised and expensive product I just hope I'm wrong but I'm becoming very worried due to the lack of updates & communications from the company.
I wonder if it has to do with DISH Network buying them.  One wonders if their R&D resources are busy integrating functionality into DISH's set top boxes instead of focusing on the core product.

I use orb to stream live video from cable or satellite to my iphone and to be honest it looks ten times better than my tweaked htc diamond running slingplayer

you have a tuner on the pc and download the software for free and either pay for the app on the iphone or use the limited capabilities of the free orb through apple store

I tried out ORB, and can't say that I liked it much.
I didn't like having all my media go through their web-site portal thing.  Why does every new product have to be on a web-site and try to be it's own freakin' social network!!!! I hate that.  Doesn't anyone care about privacy?  That's another rant.

Sling is set to announce/demonstrate the iPhone Slingplayer at MacWorld today/this week. I'm soooo happy they have finally given us something official. They are to deliver the app to Apple for certification in Q1, so I'm guessing by July I'll be able to get(buy) it from the app store.

Finally progress or something from SlingMedia. Well done though, slinging on your iPhone looks so much better than any other phone.

Well, that's great news that sling is going to be released sometime soon for iphone

"Before getting too excited, just remember that Apple has been known to kill promising apps, ostensibly for the crime of a large data transfers. SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone could suffer the same fate. Assuming it doesn't, the client still faces competition from Orb, whose full version, OrbLive, delivers live TV and media stored on your PC for $10."

yeah, I don't think apple will ax the progress of the slingbox app
How Orb got granted either is a sign of the times or maybe apple is relaxing a little these days

And Orb isn't a stand alone solution like Slingbox.
I like that slingbox has nothing to do with my PC...much simpler to deploy.

January 6, 2009 11:05 PM

Orb for me is very different than the slingbox and I can appreciate the differences between the two products

I like orb for I can access 1000's of pictures and hundreds of movies and thousands of mp3s right from my pc.

I like it for I can modulate security cameras and use orb to display realtime camera shots for high end security installs that I do

now slingmedia is another breed I use it to control man different devices that are connected and yes it's a "stand alone" device

Slingbox for Iphone will only work on Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD.

See: http://ca.slingmedia.com/get/io_1238539119898.html
"Your current Slingbox will still work without the upgrade, but software like SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and future services will only be supported for customers using Slingbox SOLO and Slingbox PRO-HD products or forthcoming SlingLoaded products."

For users of any other slingbox products, the new iPhone app is USELESS unless you spend around $250.00 for the hardware upgrade plus est$50.00 iphone app.

Myself, I have the slingbox classic. An orb server + tuner card is looking mighty nice right about now.

April 4, 2009 10:08 AM

Slingbox PRO owners: Don't dispair. The PRO has been added to the Slingbox lineup that works with iPhone and "future services":

"Current Slingbox functionality will not be affected if you choose not to upgrade, but software like SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and future services yet to be announced will only be supported for customers using Slingbox SOLO, Slingbox PRO and Slingbox PRO-HD products or forthcoming SlingLoaded products."

People who own the original non-PRO Slingbox, the AV and the TUNER vesions have my deepest sympathy.

April 4, 2009 3:08 PM

I had to upgrade to the Solo a while ago since my Classic finally died.

Even so, the older units sell very well on eBay - could recoupe some of the upgrade cost.

Also I'm pretty sure I paid a lot less for the Solo than $200 bucks, was more like $130.

I'm expecting the iPhone client to be priced at $29.95ish, since the PocketPC was $19.95. If it's $50 I'll still probably buy it. If Sling can somehow include the iPhone client for free if you are forced to buy a new Slingbox, that would also be nice...

April 4, 2009 4:25 PM

When I first started with the slingbox I used to see people upset of how a lot of things were money orientated now I'm starting to get a little turned off by it all. I have the means to buy the new equpment but why? Just a little upsetting to see a good product being driven only by how much more they could make rather than the satisfaction of those that put you where you are now
