Beta Updates

I thought I'd offer a few updates on the status of various beta programs.

- SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbain UIQ: This beta is just about wrapped up.  We should be done by the end of the month with the first general release of the client out.

- SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0: As you may have picked up from the recent leaks and forum chatter, SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0 (SP2.0 for short) is indeed currently in beta.  We expect the beta to run several weeks, and we'll add testers in waves during the program.

- SlingPlayer Mobile for Blackberry: No new updates, we're waiting on the release of firmware updates to complete development and enter beta.  We're quite eager to have this client out, so we'll go to beta as soon as we can.

- SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone & iPod Touch: No new updates, we're in early stages of development on this client.  We should have more to say later this year.

- Slingbox PRO-HD: We're preparing to launch this beta program.

- SlingCatcher: No updates just yet, still slated for release later this year.

Hmm, some random other tidbits.  We are working on an update for SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Mobile to accomodate WinMob 6.1 devices with new screen resolutions, like the Treo 800w's 320x320 screen.  And we're looking at other mobile updates for new phones, more on those when details firm up.  We have some other interesting projects in the pipeline, but I can't tell you about those yet.

As always, if you're interested in beta testing Sling Media product please sign up at https://beta.slingmedia.com/ And, vitally important, make sure you update your profile to list your test platforms - the 'Add New Platform' link on the left once you're logged into your account.  We use the listed test platforms when recruiting testers for new programs.  So, for example, if you're interested in testing for the iPhone you'd better have an iPhone listed in your profile or you're probably not getting in when that program launches.  Applicants to the Symbian UIQ beta who don't have a UIQ phone in their profile were not admitted to the program, so be sure to keep your profile up to date with your devices - phones, PCs, Slingboxes, etc.

Thanks for your support!

Good to read about the 800w. I was thinking of getting one later this year when my Verizon contract comes up for renewal.

There is an update to to SlingPlayer for Mac 1.5 in the works.  But I couldn't say if any changes to the remote control ofr that PVR are in there.

The E71 will probably be part of the next SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian S60 update, which is tentatively planned for late this year.  But don't take that as a firm commitment, just the current planning.  Right now we're occupied with an update to WinMob 6.1 for new devices with new screen resolutions (like the Treo 800w), Blackberry, and iPhone.  When the next S60 update happens is really resource dependent.

Doesn't this mean that we are very close to get the SPM for the iPhone...I mean this is already working (youtube).
We want at least a Beta or an Alpha...please get it before Xmas!!!

What was shown on the iPhone was a technology demo only, not a full client. And it was only for a jail broken phone, it wasn't written using the SDK. Basically it has little to do with the final client other than showing that the basic functionality is possible on the iPhone. What was shown really doesn't indicate status of the final client which will basically be entirely different. We're not talking dates on the iPhone yet. And as for beta, remember under Apple's restrictions we can only have 100 testers. So there isn't going to be any broad availability of beta before the actual release.

And it looks like any Symbian S60 update will not happen this year. Blackberry will and a small WinMob update (Treo 800w, Treo Pro, etc) will by the current plan.

Any update on the iPhone? How do we become one of the 100 besides being a beta member?

Thanks

Sorry, no updates other than work continues. And there is no magic way to be one of the selected testers, it comes down to being registered and a bit of luck.
