SlingPlayer 2.0, Symbian UIQ, PRO-HD & Catcher Pre-Orders, and more...

Well, this has been quite a busy day at Sling.  When it rains it pours.

First, SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian UIQ has been released to the public - see the press release for all the details.

The UIQ handsets that will support SlingPlayer Mobile at launch include:

  • Sony Ericsson P1i
  • Sony Ericsson P990i
  • Sony Ericsson W960i
  • Sony Ericsson W950i
  • Sony Ericsson M600i
  • Sony Ericsson G700
  • Sony Ericsson G900
  • Motorola Z8
  • Motorola Z10
I ran the beta for that, so I'm especially happy to see it hit the streets.

Speaking of betas, SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0 Public Beta 2 (Build .457) was released tonight.  If you're already running Beta 1 (Build .447) you should receive a prompt to auto-update.  If you're not yet running SlingPlayer 2.0 you can download Beta 2.

But that't not all - tonight the product pages for both the Slingbox PRO-HD and the SlingCatcher went live on the Sling Media website.  But more than just product pages, you can now pre-order the Slingbox PRO-HD and the SlingCatcher direct from Sling Media or from Amazon.  Both units are priced with a $299.99 MSRP.

And what else...

Oh yeah - we are in Apple's iPhone Developer Program, and have been for a while.  Just so you know.

does this mean you will finally get a player for the E71 so I can ditch HAVA for my slingbox. Hava works for the E71 but it is not slingplayer

September 10, 2008 12:54 AM

The E71 runs Symbian S60, the client release today is for Symbian UIQ - same roots but not compatible with each other.

The E71 is likely to be included in the next update to the Symbian S60 client, it just came out to late for the last update. But I can't say when that update will happen, but I wouldn't expect it this year. The mobile team is focused primarily on the Blackberry and iPhone development efforts currently.

I guess im stuck with hava for now. that is a shame

September 10, 2008 1:24 AM

what are the updates to the slingboxes 1.2.8 and was there an update to slingplayer 2.0?

September 10, 2008 1:35 AM

I said in the post there was an update to SP2.0 - Public Beta 2 replaced Public Beta 1.

And as for the Slingbox firmware updates it brought with it, I think those have to do with improving support for the SlingCatcher.

September 10, 2008 1:36 AM

oh i thought you ment clip and sling

September 10, 2008 1:38 AM

Ah, no, Clip+Sling is another beast entirely. And, despite what some claim, it is very much alive and kicking and still slowly meandering toward release.

It is a very hectic time at Sling right now. I've slept 5 hours since Sunday. ;-)

I will say I cant wait to get my eee pc 1000h to run slingbox

September 10, 2008 1:42 AM

can i be a beta tester >:)

September 10, 2008 1:46 AM

Well, anyone can apply to be a tester - https://beta.slingmedia.com/ - but I have to say the individual odds aren't high. We have several thousand people signed up but can only manage several hundred at a time, at best, across multiple simultaneous programs. (Which is one reason we're hiring for the beta team - see a previous blog post.)

so does anyone know when Slingbox PRO-HD will be released?

September 10, 2008 2:39 AM

Yes.

Oh, you want me to say? :-) Sorry, I'd like to but I can't. I like my job. But it would be logical to think it can't be that long if we're taking pre-orders.

Hmm, maybe we should start a betting pool. I'd abstain, of course...

Hi MagaZon,

Thanks for the reply. From scale 1 to 10? Which one is closer? : ) Do you mind if you can give a guess.

Eh, I probably shouldn't even joke about it. The honor of announcing the dates belongs to people well above my pay grade.

What were the changes in public beta 2?

September 10, 2008 9:05 AM

On the iPhone developement, is there any truth that Apple is balking at allowing Sling to release it?

I've heard rumors in other blogs. I'm waiting to purchase a Sling to replace my ReplayTV, but would love to have my iPhone supported as well.

September 10, 2008 9:15 AM

Hey MegaZone,

I noticed that the Slinglink Wireless was removed as an accessory on the SlingCatcher page. Is that peripheral still being released or will the SlingCatcher now have built-in Wi-Fi?

I know that for me personally, without easily transportable wi-fi capabilities, the SlingCatcher will be a hard sell.

Thanks.

louisw - Unfortunately it doesn't look like they compiled a cumulative list of changes from Beta 1 to Beta 2. The web pages have been updates to reflect the status in Beta 2, but I don't know what changed from Beta 1. There have been a lot of bug fixes from .447 to .457, but there have been a few internal builds between them so I'm fuzzy on just what changes in the public builds.

Smith43 - No, there isn't. But I'm not sure how a Slingbox would replace a ReplayTV. The Slingbox isn't a DVR.

bbraune - The SlingLink Wireless was actually dropped a long time ago, for various reasons I can't get into, it is dead. Unfortunately some of the old pages hadn't been scrubbed until recently. And the SlingCatcher does not have WiFi built-in. The need for WiFi support is recognized and a few different proposals to handle it are in discussion. In the meantime I remember Dave Zatz had found a nice Ethernet-to-WiFi bridge which drew power from USB. So you could power it off the Catcher's USB port and not need another power connector.

Mega Zone,

I really appreciate you answering so many questions! It a breath of fresh air!

Can you give any indication as to when any of the 4 big publicly announced products (bb and iphone; Slingcatcher and Pro-HD) will be going into public beta?
