It's TRUE! SlingCatcher Now Available for Pre-Order

A long time ago, at a Consumer Electronics Show far, far away... Sling Media announced a little product called SlingCatcher; a revolutionary device designed to connect and stream your Slingbox (meaning your home television sources) to any TV set in or out of the home. That was all the way back in early 2007.

We happened to get another look at SlingCatcher at the 2008 CES, and were no less impressed by what SlingCatcher has to offer the Slinger. Any TV is magically transformed to your TV, plus other nifty abilities like the ability to playback digital audio and video from a disk or USB drive, or even display content directly from your computer screen. We were told that SlingCatcher's feature set was a moving target, so it's not clear yet what abilities it will have at launch until we get some hands on time.

Starting today, SlingCatcher is officially available for pre-order, meaning it won't be long now until this highly anticipated, often considered "never coming" gadget will be showing up at your door.

For $299, the ability to watch and control your home TV on another TV is only a short time away. Tie that in with the new Slingbox PRO HD (which also is now available for pre-order) and you can stream to your SlingCatcher or computer in high-definition resolution.

Pre-Order your SlingCatcher today from the Sling Community Shop (powered by Amazon).

David, where in Australia are you? If you're in Brisbane or Canberra, we might be able to work something out.

OK, I read the blurb on the SlingCatcher and I'm still a little confused as to what it does.

Does it eliminate the need for my laptop (with internet connection) when connecting to my home TV?

If it does that, how does it make the internet side of the connection?

Thanks, a happy SLingbox user for three years

.. it will come with a dual voltage transformer .. youll just have to use a travel plug adapter to get the pin config right for the wall ....

So far, I've seen just enough info to make me both curious and confused.
What differentiates Sling Catcher from SlingBox Pro? Apple TV?
How does the receiving (remote) TV interface with Sling Catcher?
Assuming the Internet is involved, what kind of bandwidth is required at the remote site in order to get a clean, unbroken signal?
I have no problem moving TV programming around the house, so the price point seems pretty steep just to occasionally watch TV at a remote location.
Aside from possible broadcast industry objections, I'm also concerned about ISP interference through bandwidth throttling... think Comcast!

I have to admit, I too am a bit confused what this product does differently than my Slingbox. Anyone care to break things down in laymen terms?

September 12, 2008 8:24 PM

For those that are confused about what the SlingCatcher does, it is essentially a reverse Slingbox. Instead of capturing signals from a video source, it outputs the signal from a Slingbox directly to a TV, eliminating the need for a computer. It will also allow viewing of other videos and things over the internet. I'm most interested in this because when I go on vacation I don't have many of the channels that I usually watch. With the SlingCatcher I just have to keep my Slingbox Pro on at home connected to my DirecTV receiver and any TV I connect the SlingCatcher to becomes the TV that my DirecTV receiver is hooked up to. I want to watch TV on a TV, not on a computer screen... and this lovely little device will let me do it.

Poit explained it pretty clearly, the idea behind the catcher is it will enable you to "catch" your Sling stream. This is great for people that don't have cable/sat in a room or maybe in an office. You could set the Catcher up in your office (just an example) and now watch your Slingbox from home. The Catcher will have a remote control to let you change channels much like your TV does. If you have both good upload and download speeds this could work great. This will also replace a computer being hooked up to your TV that many of us already do just to watch a remote Sling. In reading the Amazon website it will also work with Netflix and YouTube as well to let you watch movies and videos from your computer. Until it is offically released I don't imagine we'll know all we can really do with it.

Slingbox ProHD Slinging DirecTV HR23 and OTA HD via Comcast HSI using AirLink Powerline adapters; Slingbox Pro and Classic Slinging and D* HR21/D12 via Sunddenlink HSI, using Linksys Gaming adapter. 2 Slingcatchers set up to use Slings.

In other words, you set up the Sling Catcher in a remote location that must have access to hi-speed internet service. You connect it to the Internet source with an ethernet cable and to a TV set with either composite or component cables. You can then connect via Internet with your home-based Slingbox and tune your home video sources (cable box, DVR, etc.) to the video programming of your choice.

Where is the advantage over using a Slingplayer-equipped laptop (assuming one has a laptop)?

The advantage is that a laptop is not needed and it connects directly to a TV, which is where most of the content that it will be streaming was meant to be viewed on.

Let's say I'm not the only one that wants to watch what my Slingbox is streaming.  Would I rather have a couple people crowded around a laptop with a tiny screen or everyone nice and relaxed on a couch in front of a nice big TV?

They don't ship it to Germany and I wonder if they really ship to the UK.  Does anybody know if you have to pay additional import tax and VAT if you order it from the UK or do they send it from within the UK?

September 14, 2008 2:47 AM

If you buy a SL-Catcher in the US, you can get the TAX back if you send it to Europe. Here in Europe you have to pay the import TAX.
I'm thinking to fly to the US and buy my SL-Catcher there if you can really buy it.

If and when it becomes available in the UK, you won't pay import duties if you're ordering it from another EU country, although it will be subject to our VAT, which is 17.5 per cent. On the other hand, if you import it from the US, you will probably be subject to both import duty and whatever the rate of VAT is in Germany.

Ok. So they've released the Slingcatcher but what's with the price? I was hoping to eliminate a receiver from my directv package and replace it with a sling catcher. But given the receiver is $4.99 per month and the Slingcatcher is 300.00, it would take me 5 Years to get the payback.

I'm hoping the price comes down substantially over time. This initial pricing is completely rediculous! Get real Slingmedia. The Slingcatcher should be priced at about $99.00. Your 200% above what I would have expected.

We've waited for what seems to be an eternity to get this device, and now we'll have to wait even longer until they finish gouging all the cool-aid drinkers who will buy this at this price. If we in the the SlingCommunity were smart, we would all rise up and just say NO to this price. Believe me, if sales slump in the pre-release phase, they'll drop the price, and we'll all win.

I'm so disappointed to have one slingbox pro because I was expecting that all of my 3 children can wirelessly connect to it using their laptops. Slingmedia never mention in their ads the limitation of the unit. If I knew it can only stream to only one laptop, I would rather purchase the TV infinity of leadtec because it can stream wirelessly using wifi signal to a maximum of 4 laptop units. Hope buyers can read this before deciding to buy slingbox unit.
