SlingPlayer for Mac OS X 1.0.6 Released

Earlier today, Sling Media put up a new version of SlingPlayer for Mac OS X for download, and while it's not the major 2.0 overhaul that users are waiting to sink their teeth in to, it does offer a few worthwhile improvements over the previous version.

The most important of these enhancements impacts new PRO-HD owners. Some users have reported problems setting up the brand new Slingbox PRO-HD with SlingPlayer for Mac OS X. Today's update should fix any issues during the set up process, but Mac users will still need to hold out for 2.0 to get HD streaming and the other 2.0 features.

Other Release Highlights:

  • Improved video quality
  • Online Slingbox registration added; plus users can store their Slingbox ID online for easy access
  • Improved Slingbox Setup Assistant: New setup and configuration screens are streamlined and easier to use
  • Users can rapidly cycle between Fullscreen (4:3), Widescreen (16:9), Letterbox, Windowbox, Pillarbox modes
  • Show / Hide player controls with one-click toggle

16:9 seems broken. I've tried with both composite and S-Video, and my "view" menu doesn't show any "widescreen" option. The other options either squeeze 16:9 into 4:3 or show only part of the image.

16:9 should work. In fact, all the screen size adjustments should work. I have verified this.

One REALLY nice thing about this update is that you can set separate resolutions for Internet and LAN viewing. That's cool.

The options I see are, None, Letterbox, Pillarbox, and Windowbox. Not seeing a 16:9 aspect option in the menu.

That's what I have, too - no widescreen or 16:9 option. This is with a Slingbox AV, FWIW.

This version isn't correctly detecting 4:3 signals. Everything is displayed in a 16x9 window. solo connected via component

I am waiting for 2.0 to be released for mac before I buy a Pro-HD. Hopefully it comes out before Christmas. Is there an ETA on it?

Same here - I only just bought the Solo and had the 1.4 Slingplayer on my Macbook - worked excellant. Then went to upgrade it on the IMac and now it is dissapointing.

No 16:9 option listed.

I just upgraded my MAC OS Slingplayer software which also prompted a firmware update for my SB AV. the update seemed to install fine. Usually everything is seemless with SB and MAC OS. I know my SB AV took the updates fine (firware) because my Slingbox mobile (on a Treo 700WX) is working fine. But the new MAC OS version is crashing after 5 seconds of connect. Seeing as mobile is recieving signal it leads me to believe the SB AV firmware update is not the issue, but the MAC OS upgrade of SB player is the problem. It boots up, connects, shows about 3 seconds of live TV and crashes. I've re-downloaded and re-installed/re-booted and no luck. Anyone else having any issues similar? Any advice from any more experienced SB users out there? Thanks

I'm a little shocked actually, seeing as SB and their updates and product are usually spot-on and work with a minimal of tech skills. I'm middle of the road software/tech savvy and I can't figure it out. I have a new laptop with Vista as well, which also runs Slingy (my affectionate term for this cool device). I'll update the Windows version of Slingplayer tonight. If it runs on my Windows platform that confirms its not the SB itself (it works on my Treo 700wx perfectly) and thus narrows it down to the MAC version. Jerry, do you have it on any other machines/phones that you can try it with? What version of MAC OS are you running? Can anyone offer help?

I'm not having any probs. 867Mhz PB, SlingOS 1.0.6.244, MacOS 10.5.5. Usually, if I install any large piece of software, I might also run Applejack. If you haven't heard of it, it's a lifesaver, it does a chkdsk, resets permissions, clears caches and prefs. Get a Leopard-compatible version now, thru Versiontracker or Macupdate.

Try going to prefs, before the picture comes up and it crashes. Also, for those having widescreen issues, try changing ratios before the picture comes up as well.

I also had the no widescreen problem - and after a very poor Sling agent messing about with the setting via the remote rescue tool, he confessed that it was a known problem with the latest mac software and that it was being 'looked at'. The ONLY way you will get your widescreen back is by installing the old version of the software (I'm using 1.0.4.209) IF you have it on your mac, because you wont find it on the Sling website. Very poor service from Sling!

I have a copy of the 1.04 on my Mobile Me account - tripyrenees, if anyone wants to download it.

You have to live with the "there is a new version available" box that pops up every so often though.

Hope this helps those with the ratio/16:9/4:3 issues.

I am running on a Slingbox Classic and I think the issue may lie in the fact that the Classic was (from what I have read) made to actually run 4:3 only. I could be wrong, but I am running the version that I downloaded from the link above and could not be happier to have my option of widescreen again!

I am running a Slingbox Pro-HD and the SlingPlayer 1.0.6 client and there is no 16:9 option so I don't think the bug is limited to specific hardware.

Correct - it's the software release. Sling screwed up.

NICE!! I just received my spankin' BRAND NEW Slingbox Pro-HD today for my wife's birthday (& her Mac). I can't WAIT for all of these problems everyone mentioned above. fun, Fun, FUN . . .

Nothing like a BAD DEPLOYMENT and bad customer service to F'UP her birthday. Most people want to play with their new toy after they unwrap it . . I guess I'll be telling my wife, "Here you go, but you can't use it until SlingPlayer 2.0 is released . . whenever that may be."

God job guys, good job

Hey thanks alot. Installing the older version 1.0.4 brought my Slingy forMac back to life. Apparently it is the 1.0.6 version that has a bug. I have a back-and-forth email trail going with customer support and will post if they can resolve it. I truly believe it is a bug in the new version. The link you provided got me the old version back...again much appreciated.
