SlingPlayer 2.0.1.481 Out - Direct Connect Returns, Canada Gets EPG
Categories: News, Rumors and Gossip PC
Sling Media has let loose the latest update to the next gen SlingPlayer for Windows software, which is currently available for download from Sling Media's website or through the update tool within SlingPlayer.
Aside from the typical firmware and minor bug fixes, one of the major additions includes the return of direct IP connections, giving users stuck behind strict firewalls and blocked from Sling Accounts the ability to connect directly to a Slingbox.
We've also been told Canadian Slingbox owners are getting some love, and can now enjoy the same Electronic Program Guide services US customers have been using since the original debut of the next-generation software.

Other Changes:
- SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0.1.481 includes firmware updates for all Slingbox models except Tuner, with Slingbox Classic and AV showing improved quality and performance, while reducing the frequency of split video issues that have been reported.
- The ATSC/QAM support on the Slingbox PRO-HD has received a few refinements, most notably the option to add unassigned channels as favorites for QAM or ATSC input.
- Under Settings --> Options --> Connection, the ability to specify and use proxy connections has been added. (Thanks JPOPUSA)

Working now, (forgot what country I set on my AV)
Still doesn't work on my Desktop PC. Sad.. Internet assistant doesn't see my Internet connection (Wireless).
1.5 works fine.
2.0 connects to my slingbox but won't let me sign-in and doesn't recognize my internet connection. Same thing as the previous 3 releases. Wish they would try and figure out why it isn't working. I've posted in the forums every time (along with other people), but other than that, no one from sling has every asked for any feedback, tried to debug it or list of issues. Even when it was a public beta. Does sling even look at the issues in the forums?
BTW... I also hate the way the upgrade works. I upgraded 2 machines by using the built-in upgrade mechanism that is part of the player. It says it is downloading software inbetween playing video.. There needs to be some status bar. There is no way for me to tell progress or anything.. Both times I almost just quit the player and downloaded over the internet.
Since 2.0, I really miss the channel icons at the bottom of the Sling Player. Maybe it's a setting that I'm just not getting correct? The built-in DVR & buffering problems cleared up greatly but I sure do miss the icons.
Anyone hear about a player for the iPhone 3G? Thanks in advance my fellow Slingers!
I upgraded and tested this both on my Slingbox Classic as well as my Slingbox Solo. The EPG works for me (I'm in Canada). I still notice that there appears to be some glitches with the Closed Caption. Sometimes, the words will be messed up (misspelled) with SlingPlayer (but displays properly on the television set).
Upgraded to the new version of both the player and firmware. Speeds have dropped dramtically. Used to get 700-800kbps now I am stuck at 60kpbs with an occasional up to 150 which lasts for a few seconds.. horrible update.. Is there a way to rollback?
So any love for UK users, in regards of version 2.0 and EPG?

If you feel like it. Please let Sling know about this.

Thankyou
The new player 2.0.1481 and new firmware for my Sling Solo 1.2.18 do not fix the slow down that continues to be reported by many SLing Solo users ever since Sling released the new player and firmware earlier this year.
My experience rolling back the firmware has resulted in no improvement at all.
The SlingPlayer will work fine for a minute and then drop to 114 KBs ...
I use dual monitors and generally put Sling on the secondary monitor and do computing tasks on the primary monitor. The primary monitor has the Start menu and task bar at the bottom. Since the upgrade, as soon as I put Sling Player to full screen the Start Menu hides. If I put Sling back into windowed mode the Start menu returns. I can see that this makes sense in the typical single monitor set up - but in my set up this is really unappreciated! I only ask for an option to turn this feature on and off. Thanks!

ok.. Cool that help when downloading updates.. but I doubt I will remember to hit Alt-Shift-i next time a download happens. There is no way to get to this information through the menus...

I don't have time to call support. I've called them in the past and felt like I wasted hours of my time/life talking to someone who just wanted me to reinstall software which I have already done a number of times. I've been using this same PC for Slingplayer for years. 1.5 worked fine. 2.0 works fine accept for the login feature.
Again, the player plays video. I just can't sign-in because the slingplayer setup program can't detect my connection. I play video at 3000-5000kbps over wireless-N. I'm not the only one who is having issues like this..
Also, if they are going to release a beta, even public, they should be reading a forum, or providing a method for feedback on issues. Otherwise, why even have a beta? I realize this is GA now, but the issue has been around since the beta.
I had a response here, but there's no point - it's falling upon deaf ears. I'll be moving along now.

I agree. Sorry.. didn't mean this to get into a debug thread. There is nothing to debug. I'm glad they added back the features they did.
Now just work on the bugs and we will all be happy.
