SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry Arrives

"Before the end of the year."

That's the mantra BlackBerry owners have heard over and over again since the 2008 CES show back in January. It's still 2008 (barely), but it least they made it. A public beta of SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry is out NOW.

BlackBerry owners have been eagerly waiting to watch Slingbox streams from their mobile phones for well over a year. It's been a long road, but at least some of them (GSM BlackBerry users) get to join the "I watch TV on my cell phone" fan club, which until now had been exclusive to Windows Mobile, Palm, and Symbian users.

BlackBerry owners on CDMA networks like Verizon and Sprint still have to hold out hope whatever platform glitch preventing SlingPlayer from working will get resolved in the future.

While the official launch isn't until at least midnight Eastern, members here in the community have reported that if you point your Blackberry browser to mobile.slingmedia.com you can download the public beta now.

What are you still reading this for? GO get it! Just don't forget to come back and share your thoughts about it either in the discussion below or in the forums

Have fun!

I've already explained many times what the issue is, and it isn't anything Sling can control. Look at the existing forum threads if you want the facts instead of speculation.

I'm on Rogers. Does anyone know the impact this would have on one's data plan?

I have the Blackberry 8800 from AT&T, my software is 4.2.xxxxx and not 4.5 as listed as a minimum. Am i at risk if i try to install the sling on teh device?

December 30, 2008 2:14 PM

You're at risk of it just plain not working. 4.5 or better is a *requirement*, anything before 4.5 lacks OS components SPM needs to run. Update your firmware before you try to install SPM.

This is 100 kinds of awesome. I'm downloading now. Thank you!

I have a BlackBerry Storm with latest software release only I am on Verizon. Noticed recommended for AT&T. The DL site mobile.slingmedia.com beta recognized by BlackBerry but would not proceed with DL due to compatability. Why is that? Verizon has wireless G. Is this only rolling out to AT&T?????

December 30, 2008 3:53 PM

The Storm is not a currently supported model. See the BlackBerry forum in the forums section here for a lot more info.

Unfortunately the RIM website said there were no updates for the 8800.  I got it when it first came out and thought it would be able to be updated, since the 8820 appears to be the same phone.  ARRRGGGHHH i waited a year for this to come out.

Now i have to get the bold just to get my slingbox cause there's no way i'm waiting another year for this to come in on my blackberry.  Good news is my corporate discount gets me a bold for $200 with no added committment.

Any idea if i'm wrong, and the BB 8800 can get updated device software?

Oh man am I jealous--Love the BlackBerry but, Verizon is another story-I hope you guys work out a fix before next football season so I can sling while I'm at the games.

December 30, 2008 11:33 PM

WOW! I finally got it working on my local network. I did have to enter the IP address' of the 2 slingbox's. After playing for a few hours, I have to say it works GREAT. No problems at all. This afternoon when I was out, I tried the mobile network. Again, no problems.

This is pretty neat!

With no real issues, I have to say, it was worth the wait.

I hope everyone enjoys the New Year Slinging on there BB's.

Installs perfectly on my Bold 9000 except that it insists that I use Slingplayer 2.0 to set the password, except rest of world is on version 1.5.
Dooooh as my namesake would say :-)

December 31, 2008 3:11 AM

Yeah, right now SP2.0 is required to manage the information in Sling Accounts, and we know that's only officially been released for the US and Canada. Windows users elsewhere can grab one of those builds if they want to, an international release of SP2.0 is still in the works. A Mac OS SP2.0 is also still in the works.

We're also putting together a web-based interface to allow you to manage the Sling Account information, so the desktop software will hopefully not be necessary. We're planning to have this ready before SPM BB officially launches.

There are definitely updates for the 8800.  I suggest checking sites like Crackberry.com - in fact, there is a post on their site from just a few days ago about new firmware.

Thank you MEGAZONE, fast (just!) than Sling support. Bold 9000 works absolutely perfectly, seems much smoother than my N95/N96. Any reason to degrade back to 1.51 (other than copyright?) as Version 2 is so much better? It did an upgrade to my UK Sling Pro's that did not appear with V 1.51 as well!

SP2.0 won't have the icons for your UK favorites and such, but other than that it should work fine until the European version of SP2.0 is out.
