SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry Public Beta Released

As we announced back on December 18th, we planned to have SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry in public beta for 12/30.  It is 12/30 right now, at least on the east coast, and we've uploaded SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry v0.5.0.3 and made it available to the public.  Users can visit http://mobile.slingmedia.com/ from their BlackBerry to install the software.  (We're not making a desktop installer available as part of the public beta at this time to reduce the support issues, OTA installs only.)  As previously announced, the officially supported devices are the Pearl 8120, Pearl Flip 8220, Curve 8320, 8820, Curve 8900, and Bold 9000.  Unofficially the EDGE-only 8100, 8110, 8300, 8310, 8800, and 8810 will also work.  All models must have firmware revision 4.5 or later to install SlingPlayer Mobile.

Sharon and I will be working the Sling Media booth at CES next week.  So if any of you will be attending feel free to drop by and say hello.  I believe we're currently scheduled for the afternoons of the first, third, and fourth days, and the morning of the second.

Is this WiFi on the same LAN as the Slingbox?  Is SPM connecting to Sling Accounts successfully and just failing to connect to the Slingbox?  Or is it even failing to connect to our servers?

I've downloaded the BB Slingplayer to my 8820 with no problems. It connects to the mobile network and runs the 2 slingboxes I have set up. It refuses to connect to the wi-fi network. I've tried deleting the network and re-connectiing. I dis-abled the mobile network and tried connecting via wi-fi. It won't connect. I changed the settings a few times. It won't connect. I know the BB is connected to the internet because I can browse with no issues.

Thanks in advance for your help.

SPM did connect to my Slingbox over T-Mobile EDGE (connection is not create). So no problems with the route back to my Slingbox from the internet.

OK - based on this and your next post about EDGE I'm betting your router is blocking loopback connections.  When on the same LAN using Sling Accounts the BB is probably connecting to Finder ID - which points to the public IP of the router.  So it goes from LAN to public IP, loops back through the router to the Slingbox.

One way to confirm this is to log OUT of Sling Accounts on SPM BB and manually enter the Slingboxes using LAN IP and port.  If this works, which is a direct connection, but the Sling Account Finder ID connection doesn't, it is the router blocking the loopback.  You'd have to check the router to see if there is a way to enable that.

It worked onced I entered the LAN IP and port. I checked my router and Loopback is enabled.

If you swap out the IP for the Finder ID does it work? If not, it is definitely a loopback issue, even if the router thinks it is enabled. Since the only difference between LAN IP and Finder ID would be direct vs. loopback.

Do you have T-Mobile UMA connected?  UMA blocks SPM's ability to see WiFi, instead it shows up to SPM as Mobile when UMA is connected.

When I add the Finder ID...the SMP does not allow me to add the '-' of the id.  Are they neccssary

When I was using the in the LAN IP I was using the internal network address. When you use the Finder ID does it go out to SM to find out what my Slingbox's external IP address is?

My other idea would be to setup port-fowarding on my router.

Should this work with my sprint 8830?

December 30, 2008 9:27 AM

Nope, just skip the dashes.

And yes, Finder ID is kind of like DNS for a Slingbox. It asks the server what IP to call, and that will be the WAN IP of the router.

If WAN streaming works you already have port-forwarding on the router - it needs that to work.

No, sorry, the 8130, 8330, and 8830 are not currently supported.  The full explanation has been posted a few times, it is a platform issue RIM is still working on.

It did not work wih the Finder ID. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G V2 router with the 'DD-WRT v24 (05/20/08) vpn' firmware. It seems that I will need to use my local IP address when I'm on my local LAN but when I'm on other networks I can just use my sling.com account to connect.

December 30, 2008 10:04 AM

I found this about DD-WRT:
Loopback

Enable / disable the loopback interface. The loopback interface makes your internal clients appear as if they are external. This is useful for testing things like DynDNS names. The loopback is an option because enabling it will break PPTP and Windows machine browsing by wireless clients.

It sounds like maybe the interface needs to be disabled?

I know this came up in the beta and there is a way to make this work with DD-WRT.

I'm having a problem installing on my AT&T Bold. When I get to the page on mobile.slingmedia.com, it tells me that I need to enable javascript and cookies. I made all the required changes to enable javascript, killed the broswer and reloaded. Even restarted the phone. I am still getting the message:

To use this mobile web site, your browser must support javascript and accept cookies.....

Any thoughts. Just to confirm: Support Javascript checked, Allow Javsacript popups checked, Enable javascript location support checked. v4.6.0.167

Any advice?

Make sure the Browser Identification or Emulation Mode is set to BlackBerry as well - and not IE, Firefox, etc.

And you're using the BlackBerry Browser and not Opera, etc.

Is installing Opera and doing the install that way an option?
