SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry Public Beta Released

As we announced back on December 18th, we planned to have SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry in public beta for 12/30.  It is 12/30 right now, at least on the east coast, and we've uploaded SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry v0.5.0.3 and made it available to the public.  Users can visit http://mobile.slingmedia.com/ from their BlackBerry to install the software.  (We're not making a desktop installer available as part of the public beta at this time to reduce the support issues, OTA installs only.)  As previously announced, the officially supported devices are the Pearl 8120, Pearl Flip 8220, Curve 8320, 8820, Curve 8900, and Bold 9000.  Unofficially the EDGE-only 8100, 8110, 8300, 8310, 8800, and 8810 will also work.  All models must have firmware revision 4.5 or later to install SlingPlayer Mobile.

Sharon and I will be working the Sling Media booth at CES next week.  So if any of you will be attending feel free to drop by and say hello.  I believe we're currently scheduled for the afternoons of the first, third, and fourth days, and the morning of the second.

It tries toi connect but I get the message "Slingplayer cannot connect to your Slingbox. Please check the internet connection on your phone and try again" The internet connection is working because I can browse. BTW, Thanks for your help and more thanks for getting the BBplayer out. I have been waiting over a year. A litlle more work and I'll be there!
OK, it sounds like you might be experiencing the loopback issue a number of others have had - your router is blocking loopback connections.  There are a few threads in the BlackBerry forum under the Forums here that explain it in detail and how to determine if that is really the issue.
I went back and read the threads. I'm sorry, but I don't understand what I should do. I went into the router a Linksys WRT54GL and can't find anything referencing loopback. I'm lost.  Again it the BBSPL works great on mobile network, but won't on local WI-FI. It goes through the process. It locates the WI-Fi then tries to connect and nothing.
The only way I have been able to get my SPM to work on my local network is to enter the IP address of the Slingbox.

Ok! How do I enter the Slingboxes IP address's?  Thanks for your help!

Found it! It works! Finally!

Thanks for your help!

1. Ensure your logged out of your account.

2. Go to the 'Slingbox Directory'

3. Select your Slingbox name

4. Select the BB menu button and select Edit

5. Select 'IP Addr or Domain Name'

6. Enter your Slingbox's IP address

7. For the 'Port' field enter 5001

8. Enter your Slingbox's Admin password.

9. Select the BB menu button and click save.

You should be now able to connect to your Slingbox from your SPM from your BB on your local network.

Try refreshing the page and loading again?  (Anyone else have an 8220, did it work OK for you?  We tested it and it should be working.)
ok I have it the slingplayer working now,  I'm disappointed that it doesn't work well with edge.  I had a tmobile dash and was able to use the slingplayer over the edge connection just fine. Any ideas, I'd be just happy to be able to listen to the tv over edge.

There has been a few post earlier in this thread regarding the BB browser and problems downloading the app.

Also you might want to check out the Sling Media FAQ page (http://support.slingmedia.com/go/spm-blackberry-faq). Sometimes if you have a corporate BlackBerry, some IT policies do not allow the installing of downloadable application.

Are you able to download other apps on your BB? Check out http://mobile.blackberry.com for apps for your BB.

We already officially support all of the modern BlackBerrys that we can - the 8120, 8220, 8320, 8820, 8900, and 9000. And unofficially the 8100, 8110, 8300, 8310, 8800, and 8810 work if the EDGE connection is good enough. We won't be supporting any older generation models (8700, etc).

That leaves the CDMA 8130, 8330, and 8830, and the newer Storm 9500/9530.

The three CDMA xx30 models have a shared platform issue that currently prevents SPM from being used. SPM will install and run, but when you start streaming data the OS resets the phone. RIM is working on this issue. If and when they resolve it and issue updated firmware, we'll be able to support those phones and we will.

The Storm is a combination of things. There are some firmware issues that make streaming in SPM not as stable but those are being fixed and we're just waiting for newer firmware. Once that's resolved we'll be able to finish work to support the touch screen UI. So this is on our roadmap.

Now i have to sit here while you test it on the un-most realiable networks... ie NOT VERIZON!!! I mean seriously, why would you try it on the "hurl" and the "old" and not the storm.... (and yes i did spell it that way to prove how crappy those phone are).

1. SPM licenses are transferrable, so there is no need to buy a new one when you get a new device.  You can just re-use the license you own - it de-activates the old device when you activate the new one.

2. Personally I'd take a Bold over the Storm any day.  And I'm also a current AT&T and former Verizon customer who is quite happy.  I won't buy a CDMA device - no SIM, no sale.

3.I've explained a number of times why the other models aren't part of the beta.

I'd make sure your router is running the latest firmware.  I can't tell you to look at 3rd party firmware, but I have a WRT54GL running HyperWRT+Thibor (which is no longer developed) which doesn't have any issue with loopback.  And tester report that the DD-WRT and Tomato firmware also work with loopback, sometimes a setting has to be enabled, but it works.  But, again, I can't really tell users to go flashing their routers with 3rd party firmware if they don't work.

If you log out of Sling Accounts and then manually enter your Slingbox into SPM BB using the SB's LAN IP and port, and that works on your WiFi, then it is almost definitely the router blocking loopback.  Because that's the difference between the direct connection via LAN IP and a connection via Finder ID.

MegaZone said: You need to use SlingPlayer for Windows 2.0 to manage the Slingboxes in Sling Accounts and to create favorites. The equivalent for Mac OS is still in development, as is a web-based interface. If you can't use SP2.0 you can still use SPM BB by not logging into Sling Accounts and entering the Slingboxes locally instead.
Not to sound too stupid...but how do I do that?  I know you're getting pounded......but with the 2.0 now my sling at home isn't even working...if I can access through here, at least I'll be good in the meantime
You mean entering the Slingboxes locally, right?  In SPM hit the Menu button on the BB then select Log Out from the menu to log out of Sling Accounts.  Then select the Slingbox Directory icon in the Ribbon (looks like a few Slingboxes together).  In there you can Add A Slingbox.

Need more data - is this WiFi or Mobile (3G)?  Are you on the same LAN as the Slingbox or connecting from outside?  (Mobile is always outside of course.)  Does SPM log into Sling Accounts OK but fails only connecting to the Slingbox?  If this is from the outside, have you configured the Slingbox and your router to allow WAN streaming?

The trackball works as the 5-way (up/down/left/right/select) control for the STB.  It is always on in full screen mode, as well as in 'On Screen Display' mode in normal view - which you get into if you select Guide or Info form the ribbon, or use the space back to dismiss the Ribbon manually.  When the Ribbon isn't showing, the trackball movements are sent to the Slingbox, and thence to the STB.

When I got home I got the error message - Slingplayer cannot connect to your Slingbox. Please check the internet connection on your phone and try again. Both areas were WiFi but I have AT&T Uverse at home. I assumed that it could be a firewall issue with the U-Verse gateway. Any thoughts?
OK, if it worked when away from home then you have WAN streaming configured successfully.  If it fails when you connect via WiFi to your LAN at home, first question is - does it still log into Sling Accounts OK?  If that still works but connecting to your Slingbox fails, then your router is probably blocking loopback connections.  This is especially likely if WiFi works from outside your LAN and only fails when you happen to be on the same LAN as the Slingbox.

SPM BB does work well over EDGE - *if* the EDGE connection is solid enough.  That's the big if.  We have a lot of people using it over EDGE reporting it is working well, and we've tested it too, of course.  But EDGE is highly variable and that's why we don't officially support it.  Too many people on a tower and the connection drops off too much.  Go outside a good coverage area and the connection is unusable.

1. Make sure you're using the BlackBerry browser.

2. Make sure you have Browser Identification and/or Emulation Mode set to BlackBerry.

3. Make sure JavaScript is on.

4. Visit http://mobile.slingmedia.com/

That should do it.  If you still get an error, clear out your browser cache(s) to make sure you don't have bad info cached.  If it still doesn't work, are you getting some kind of error?  Anything specific you can share?

I just tried the edge connection again this morning, it is working fine.  Must have been a lot of people using it last night.  Thanks

I can not connect over WiFi or mobile on my Bold. I have a solid 3G signal and cannot connect over mobile preferred or mobile. I switched to WiFi and WiFi preferred over outside networks and no luck. Tried WiFi on my local network and no luck until I did the direct ip address enter, and then it worked fine (so I have the loopback issue on my router). I can log into my slingbox account and see my slingbox, just can't connect (i get the "check your internet connection" message. Browser is set to BB, javascript is on. Cache cleared. Any thoughts?
