SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry Public Beta Released

As we announced back on December 18th, we planned to have SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry in public beta for 12/30.  It is 12/30 right now, at least on the east coast, and we've uploaded SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry v0.5.0.3 and made it available to the public.  Users can visit http://mobile.slingmedia.com/ from their BlackBerry to install the software.  (We're not making a desktop installer available as part of the public beta at this time to reduce the support issues, OTA installs only.)  As previously announced, the officially supported devices are the Pearl 8120, Pearl Flip 8220, Curve 8320, 8820, Curve 8900, and Bold 9000.  Unofficially the EDGE-only 8100, 8110, 8300, 8310, 8800, and 8810 will also work.  All models must have firmware revision 4.5 or later to install SlingPlayer Mobile.

Sharon and I will be working the Sling Media booth at CES next week.  So if any of you will be attending feel free to drop by and say hello.  I believe we're currently scheduled for the afternoons of the first, third, and fourth days, and the morning of the second.

Megazone told me that ATM you cannot edit your Sling.com account within the BB SPM app.

The error message you're getting, though, I never saw that one ... I had my own issues!

Good luck.

Lynda said: i've reloaded the app 2x... manually entered the APN... loaded the latest BB OS... still i get "Cannot locate Slingbox (No Slingbox Finder Server Connection)" SB works great on my mac and pc... i'm able to view homemade vids as well as youtube.com vids... i'm not able to add, edit or delete the slingbox (My Slingbox) in the directory any suggestions?

Does SPM successfully log into Sling Accounts when this error occurs?  Are you trying to connect via WiFi or Mobile?  If WiFi is this on the same LAN as the Slingbox or an outside network?  If outside, have you connected successfully from outside with any other clients?

There are a number of threads on the BlackBerry forum here about various issues.

When logged into Sling Accounts you cannot edit the Slingbox information, it is a one-way load from the server.  If you don't log into the server you can manually add Slingboxes to SPM.

1. Make sure you're trying this on a supported model (officially 8120, 8220, 8320, 8820, 8900, or 9000, unofficially 8100, 8110, 8300, 8310, 8800, or 8810).
2. Make sure you have firmware 4.5 or later installed.
3. Make sure you're using the BlackBerry browser and aren't emulating IE, etc.

I am running an 8310. My operating system is 4.2.2.170. Am I in need of a firmware update? And if so, how do I do that?

You have firmware 4.2, you need firmware 4.5, so yes, you need to upgrade. Check with your carrier for updates or look online.

i'm not 100% sure how to tell if SBM is logging into Sling Accounts (is that through the browser or the app?)

i'm using MOBILE (not wifi)

i have connected successfully with both my mac and pc from outside the home network

i've read through the threads, and have ensured that i've done the suggestions provided in those threads (i.e., upgrade BB OS, reinstall, etc)...

this may be a weak mobile network strength issue... on VERY rare occasions it HAS connected... however the stream is simply too chopped to enjoy

January 29, 2009 5:52 PM

It is in the App, and it is the login you get when you start SPM the first time. In the menu if you see "Log Out" then you're logged in successfully.

Since you have connected and it has worked, but has been choppy, it sounds like a an insufficient network connection. You don't say what model you have, but if it is anything other than the Bold it is limited to EDGE, and we don't officially support EDGE for the very reason that it is often too slow to stream with. The Bold will also fall back to EDGE if outside of 3G coverage.

Sorry if this is a double post. Are there any plans to support CDMA Blackberries in the near future or will this be a GSM only release when it first comes out?

January 30, 2009 5:04 PM

as previously mentioned, there is a platform issue shared by the 8130, 8330, and 8830 which prevents SPM from streaming. RIM is working on the issue and if and when they resolve it we'll be able to support those models. Separately we're also working on support for the Storm but that requires more work for the unique UI and is not coupled to the current version.

On what phone? Have you installed slingplayer on your computer, does it work. Little help here... :)

  • When asking for setup help please include whether you are using a PC or Mac and
  • if you are using the Standalone Slingplayer or the web based setup program.

Have it on my laptop works fine at my house, and anywhere else. Cant get my Bold to connect either wifi from my house or wifi from anywhere else.

im using a unlocked bold on tmobiles network. but i just want to connect via wifi.

i put my slingbox in the dmz zone in the router and opened 5001 ports.

If it works on the laptop on WiFi outside of the home it should work from the Bold on WiFi outside of the home - best test is on the same network since you know it works from that network.

If SPM won't connect on the same WiFi network the laptop works from, does SPM get logged into Sling Accounts? Can you confirm the BB is connected to the WiFi properly? Is SPM set for WiFi or WiFi Preferred as the connection method? Since this is an unlocked phone you don't have T-Mobile's UMA installed, right?

Yeah for some reason it doesnt work from the bold.

It does get logged into Sling Accounts, when I try to connect from my home wifi network.  I also tried the manual connection and that wont work either, still get the same error - unable to connect -check phones internet settings.

I have it for wifi preferred.

     No Tmobile UMA installed.

Does someone have a Slingbox I can connect to?  I will only use it once just to see if its my phone or my router.

Ok I think I have this completely figured out. I have been on this for days and it all works now.

    1) If you are outside your wireless network on another network or using edge, log into your sling account and watch.

    2) If you are within your wireless network, enter the sling IP address and port into your Blackberry configuration on your Blackberry. DO NOT LOG ON TO YOUR SLING ACCOUNT. Save it. You only enter it once.

    Works perfect.

I am having trouble connecting to my Slingbox with my Blackberry bold. It gives the error message when I connect: Slingplayer cannot connect to your Slingbox. Please check the internet connection on your phone and try again. Any recommendations to fix?
