SlingPlayer for Windows v2.0.2 is Live !

In case you missed it, yesterday we rolled out a minor update to the PC client, which is bundled with the latest Slingbox firmware.

What's New:
  • The Encoding tab has expanded options.  The UI will go through additional changes--this is just step one.  To check it out, click on the VGA/QVGA mini-icon, lower left just above the Play/Pause button.
  • The Pro-HD firmware includes a fix to allow HD streaming to a SlingCatcher (which will require new Catcher firmware, due out "soon").
Critical fixes:
  • Stream rate slows until it crashes. FIXED
     http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/thread/24708/
  • Some Vista Acer customers had installation issues  FIXED

What you need to know:
  • For those who want to switch back and forth between connecting via the Slingbox ID and Direct IP, you'll now need to Add a second entry in your Slingbox Directory.  In other words, you'll have two entries to the same Slingbox: one via the SID, one via IP.
  • There's a new issue that some of you may see in which the remote control flashes on/off.  We're currently working on a fix.

Sling on!

While you work on that little ditty that makes the software totally unusable, please add a checkbox to the "Upgrade avialable" [*] DO NOT SHOW THIS AGAIN.

I do not want to upgrade, I do not want to be reminded, and I do not want your update reminders shoved down my throat every time I open the SlingPlayer.

It is really easy to add this (I know since I write software for a living). Simply communicate this change order to your coders in India, and store the value in the registry.

Alternativly, for a few extra bucks, you can hire programmers who know how to do this right here in the good ol U.S.A., and help support the country that put you where you are today... or not, and suffer a reduction of sales, since people who cannot find work, do not buy SlingBoxes.

Upgraded to the latest version but the UI menu titles are invisible, except "Connect". The invisible menus are still clickable to bring out the pull down menu, but the menu contents are also not visible.

Also, unable to change viewing option to wide screen.

"...For those who want to switch back and forth between connecting via the Slingbox ID and Direct IP, you'll now need to Add a second entry in your Slingbox Directory. In other words, you'll have two entries to the same Slingbox: one via the SID, one via IP...."

That's a major turn-off, if I forget to switch back to SlingFinder ID when getting home, it uses up all the internet bandwidth for "loopback" to my house, and gives me lower quality connection.

RESOURCE INTENSIVE AND CHOPPY STREAM!

The new 2.0.2 build was causing issues (for me at least). I have a brand new high horsepower laptop, ran SlingPlayer 2.0.1.481, and am very thankful I kept that old installer!

2.0.2 lost my encoding settings, no biggie, but you think would optimize automatically to a non-choppy speed/resolution. Nope - super choppy. In fact, even when I reset to my old settings (390 kbps, 320x240), things were still choppy. I don't think it was the stream, I think it was just being a resource hog.

Back to 2.0.1, and back to normal! =)

Did you COMPLETELY uninstall the old version first?  I had problems where the stream would get choppy and eventually drop down to about 18kbps - on several of my computers that updated.

I found that (on 3 computers I've updated so far) uninstalling the old version and removing the settings resolved the problem.

No, that's not how it works on your LAN. On the LAN, the boxes send out broadcast packets. The SlingPlayer software picks them up. That's how it knows it's on the LAN. The finder ID is not used at all on the LAN. You'll see no difference.

Please keep your responses in the bounds of good taste. There's reasons for software upgrades as they tend to fix problems. I agree you should be able to check a box to not remind you again, but please keep it civil and don't insult the programmers Sling has hired.

You are correct. Lets address the problem. Sling has been made aware of this simple request for a very long time, yet they do not fix the problem. I wonder if this is legal to. For example, in poor lighting, I often hit the wrong button (oking the upgrade), Sling downloads the upgrade, uses my bandwidth, and diskspace, then hounds me even more to install it. Right now, I have a dialog box that will not go away, unless I hit continue (it does not respond to remind me later). SlingPlayer is useless during this period, and I am screwed, since I now have the upgrade I did not want (the upgrade does not work on the system). Now I have to uninstall, reinstal the old version, all because Sling want to "encourage me (to death)" to install it.So, why will they not do "the right thing", and opt out of the upgrades?

I guess I'm confused then...here's the situation I had:

I was setting up a spare laptop at my parents house for SlingPlayer, when I connected it with direct-connect (no finder ID), it wouldn't excede 1700Kbps at 640x480 and all the other computers started running very slow on the internet.  If I changed to the entry which used the finder id, it would run at 4Mbps.

Note, that of the two SlingBox entries in the directory, even though it's just one box with 2 connection methods, only one showed up as "local" - the other (direct connect) still showed up as "Internet".

The internet there is FiOS 5Mbps down/2Mbps up.  I don't see any other explaination except that it was trying to loop the connection through the internet.

How does it know if the selected slingbox is LAN or Internet without a unique identifier?

I haven't tried it personally, but from what I understand the updater process is a different executable.  If this is true, it should be trivial to prevent that from running - either edit the registry or just rename the updater executable so it can't check for updates.

I may try this later in a virtual machine if get bored but no promises...

Alrighty!  I found a workaround!  :)

Apparently, it somehow uses the file "C:\Program Files\Sling Media\SlingPlayer\SPConfig.ini" to identify itself when updating...

Here's the contents from the file:
[Main]
ProductID=200.00.US.99
AppData=Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0

For whatever reason...changing or deleting the value for "ProductID" is enough to stop that pesky update notice, and everything else seems to still work fine.  I tried it with the following 3 combinations and the update notification was gone:

trial 1:
[Main]
ProductID=300.00.US.99
AppData=Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0

trial 2:
[Main]
ProductID=
AppData=Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0

trial 3:
[Main]
ProductID=00.00.US.99
AppData=Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0

Did you update the firmware too?  That someone else will have to help downgrade because I don't know how.

First, I'd try a clean reinstall of the current version.  Go to Add-Remove programs and remove SlingPlayer.  When it asks about saving settings, say "No" to erase them.  Then, install the newest version of SlingPlayer and hopefully it fixes the problem; it fixed my issues with low stream rate.

If you really want to downgrade SlingPlayer (PC software, not SlingBox firmware), just uninstall it from add-remove programs and reinstall the older version.  If you didn't keep a copy of the old installer, I have posted my copy (with help of a friend) for download at http://www.ultclan.com/vwmillerm/

There is a thread *somewhere* about downgrading firmware but it's not as simple as the software so I'd see if you can leave it be and just downgrade the PC software to fix your issue.

Upgrading to 2.2.2500 does not work for me.
When connecting to my SlingboxPro it can't find it. To connect to it from outside my firewall, I have to manually enter my IP address and port number, and then it connects. but it does not save the information, so I have to re-enter it each time.
2.0.0465 works fine, it finds the box using directory services, and will also save the IP/Port numbers if I prefer.

There's another irritating bug in .2500 in that I can't get to the directory menu unless I log out, quit, restart player, and login. So reconnecting to the slingbox every time is a pretty involved snafu.

Try deleting the slingbox from your slingbox directory, and recreate it.  That should "re-load" the settings to your sling-account.

I notice that the SlingSDK was removed by this installation. Too Bad...I never found any good documentation on how to use it, but I was hoping it would lead to the ability to write custom software around it. Also, in case people don't know, you can keep the older versions in their own directory and run them as an alternative to the latest. I still keep the old 1.5 because I built my own skin which makes better use of my DVR's functions. I use it when I'm editing my stored recordings.

tom papadakos said: anybody able to edit the SPconfig.ini file to edit and save in Vista? I keep getting a "cannot save" error message in Vista

What are you using to edit it?

Make sure SlingPlayer is closed (so the file isn't flagged as in use).  Also, make sure you use a "dumb" editor like Notepad that won't check to see what it's saving.  Also, verify the read-only attribute is NOT checked in the file properties.

If that doesn't work, try rebooting and then edit it - that should purge the in-use condition.

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit and just tried editing/saving mine in Notepad without any trouble.
