SlingPlayer for Windows v2.0.2 is Live !

In case you missed it, yesterday we rolled out a minor update to the PC client, which is bundled with the latest Slingbox firmware.

What's New:
  • The Encoding tab has expanded options.  The UI will go through additional changes--this is just step one.  To check it out, click on the VGA/QVGA mini-icon, lower left just above the Play/Pause button.
  • The Pro-HD firmware includes a fix to allow HD streaming to a SlingCatcher (which will require new Catcher firmware, due out "soon").
Critical fixes:
  • Stream rate slows until it crashes. FIXED
     http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/thread/24708/
  • Some Vista Acer customers had installation issues  FIXED

What you need to know:
  • For those who want to switch back and forth between connecting via the Slingbox ID and Direct IP, you'll now need to Add a second entry in your Slingbox Directory.  In other words, you'll have two entries to the same Slingbox: one via the SID, one via IP.
  • There's a new issue that some of you may see in which the remote control flashes on/off.  We're currently working on a fix.

True, but they sometimes introduce new ones.   And often they are heavier on the CPU/ RAM/Disk space.  Many of us with older PCs have no intention to go out and buy new hardware just to run a new version of software where we are basically happy with the existing version.

I've been searching all over the net to see if anyone else has the same problem. Thanks TonyG35DG! The problems that you have after the 2.0.2500 upgrade are the exact problems that I have. The UI menu titles are invisible, except "Connect". The invisible menus are still clickable to bring out the pull down menu, but the menu contents are also not visible. Also, 'Right-clicking' brings up a menu with contents without description. I installed the 2.0.2500 upgrade on 2 different XP machines and 1 Vista machine, they all have the same problems.

One side note though, changing viewing option to wide screen can be done through clicking on the little tiny icon right above the 'Play' button at the lower-left corner.

Wow, neat trick!  I don't have the menu issue but didn't realize that button was there!

I have some of the view modes memorized...at least the ones I use.

ALT+SHIFT+N is normal view
ALT+SHIFT+L is widescreen/zoom+crop
ALT+SHIFT+A is widescreen/stretched (they have another name)

there are some others but I don't remember...

Thanks Renzy! Not being able to switch to wide screen format was the only issue I had with the new update, don't really care about the invisible menus since I don't use it much anyway. Thanks to Matt for the shortcuts too!

Ah, the beauty of using the old Slingplayer which is light, easy, and fast. Laughing

Thanks to TonyG35DG. I have exactly the same problem after installing 2.0.2500. All menu options become invisible except Connect. I thought I was the only one having this problem. I tried to do clean install but without any success. Tried to contact SlingMedia and they refuse to give any suggestion simply because my 3 slinboxes are out of service period. Anyone else is having this problem and knows any way to fix it? Thaks in advance.

Try logging out, then quit player, then start player, and see if your menus are live again.

Installed and I can not get connected to my slingbox. I have a screen that says I do not have internet connection. I did not have any problem with the other software version. I installed in my house and my office and i can not run it because the screen says I do not have internet connection.
I do not know what else to do

March 25, 2009 9:14 PM

after I upgraded to the new version I cant connect I keep getting a error saying
unable to start streaming because not all components are registered properly, please reinstall the product. error 0x80040154. can you tell me what I need to do, before I upgraded everything was working fine.

March 26, 2009 9:55 AM

after the update, sometimes the REMOTE won't show up.
and if i click or try to press buttons on the REMOTE like 3 times in a row,
the whole player would just shut down after showing an ERROR message.
it happens to my brother on another computer also.
when i try to do the same on SLING.COM, it works fine. so it has nothing to with my Slingbox.

it definitely is the new update and the software's BUG/GLITCH.

when will Sling fix this? it's very FRUSTRATING not being able to use the SlingPlayer.......

does this happen to other people also? can you fix this ASAP Sling??? please?!?!?

March 26, 2009 10:18 AM

SOLVED, I live in Canada and Sling told me that it was my HD PRO that was the issue with the infared problem, they sent me a new box and it works perfectly...but must admit it is frustrating but got great service...call the 1-877 number

March 26, 2009 5:16 PM updated: March 26, 2009 5:18 PM

i installed it away from home, both, player and firmware, at the beginning didn't notice anything better (quality wise) but when i got home i changed some video settings and i have to say WHAT A DIFFERENCE NOW! quality is just as good as it was when i just got my slingbox (firmware 1.5 i think).

March 26, 2009 10:52 PM

The update won't even install for me. I get all sorts of installshield errors. Code 1152 then 1628. Tried complete uninstall, reboot.. nothing works. Went back to .1481. Thanks goodness it reinstalled without a hitch.

They should pull this update until it's fixed.

March 27, 2009 7:46 AM updated: March 27, 2009 7:46 AM

It looks like most of people who installed this update are having problems and only few lucky ones got away without any issue. I think SlingMedia should really improve on its product release QA. At least we still have the old release to use and that was what I had to do to be able to use my Slingboxes again.

March 27, 2009 11:01 AM

I agree wholeheartedly with R.L., and would add that Sling should devote more effort to communication in this forum. This release was far below par, and was not adequately tested. This caused frustration for many, and Sling is far to absent from these threads.

Lurking (or less) hardly seems adequate.

March 27, 2009 4:46 PM

I have to agree with the other 2 posts above...

Additionally, when releasing a new player version, they should provide a minimal upgrade support TO EVERYONE regardless of the state of hardware warranty. That's called good customer service.

Even Microsoft - the king of passing the buck with "We won't help you, go seek OEM assistance" provided free support with the latest major upgrades to Vista SP1 (I had to use that) and maybe even XP SP3 (not sure, staying away for now).

March 27, 2009 4:53 PM

After I did the upgrade I was not able to see my sling boxes anymore. Then I decided to remove the software and I installed the old one. I have my slingbox working propertly again.
Wnenever I connect to my slingbox, I get a screen asking to upgrade. I just ignore the request!
