SlingPlayer for Windows v2.0.2 is Live !

In case you missed it, yesterday we rolled out a minor update to the PC client, which is bundled with the latest Slingbox firmware.

What's New:
  • The Encoding tab has expanded options.  The UI will go through additional changes--this is just step one.  To check it out, click on the VGA/QVGA mini-icon, lower left just above the Play/Pause button.
  • The Pro-HD firmware includes a fix to allow HD streaming to a SlingCatcher (which will require new Catcher firmware, due out "soon").
Critical fixes:
  • Stream rate slows until it crashes. FIXED
     http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/thread/24708/
  • Some Vista Acer customers had installation issues  FIXED

What you need to know:
  • For those who want to switch back and forth between connecting via the Slingbox ID and Direct IP, you'll now need to Add a second entry in your Slingbox Directory.  In other words, you'll have two entries to the same Slingbox: one via the SID, one via IP.
  • There's a new issue that some of you may see in which the remote control flashes on/off.  We're currently working on a fix.

Read my post on page 1 to modify the config file so it won't display the upgrade notification...

You are correct. Lets address the problem. Sling has been made aware of this simple request for a very long time, yet they do not fix the problem. I wonder if this is legal to. For example, in poor lighting, I often hit the wrong button (oking the upgrade), Sling downloads the upgrade, uses my bandwidth, and diskspace, then hounds me even more to install it. Right now, I have a dialog box that will not go away, unless I hit continue (it does not respond to remind me later). SlingPlayer is useless during this period, and I am screwed, since I now have the upgrade I did not want (the upgrade does not work on the system). Now I have to uninstall, reinstal the old version, all because Sling want to "encourage me (to death)" to install it.So, why will they not do "the right thing", and opt out of the upgrades?

While you work on that little ditty that makes the software totally unusable, please add a checkbox to the "Upgrade avialable" [*] DO NOT SHOW THIS AGAIN. I do not want to upgrade, I do not want to be reminded, and I do not want your update reminders shoved down my throat every time I open the SlingPlayer. It is really easy to add this (I know since I write software for a living). Simply communicate this change order to your coders in India, and store the value in the registry. Alternativly, for a few extra bucks, you can hire programmers who know how to do this right here in the good ol U.S.A., and help support the country that put you where you are today... or not, and suffer a reduction of sales, since people who cannot find work, do not buy SlingBoxes.
Alrighty!  I found a workaround!  :) Apparently, it somehow uses the file "C:\Program Files\Sling Media\SlingPlayer\SPConfig.ini" to identify itself when updating... Here's the contents from the file: [Main] ProductID=200.00.US.99 AppData=Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0 For whatever reason...changing or deleting the value for "ProductID" is enough to stop that pesky update notice, and everything else seems to still work fine.  I tried it with the following 3 combinations and the update notification was gone: trial 1: [Main] ProductID=300.00.US.99 AppData=Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0 trial 2: [Main] ProductID= AppData=Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0 trial 3: [Main] ProductID=00.00.US.99 AppData=Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0

thank a lot

the 2.0.2 is way too buggy

missing menu text

force power scheme to "Max Battery" (that's why it greatly crippled the machine!)

now the upgrade notifcation is gone for good!

I use 1000 instead of 200, no more notification

I upgraded to 2.0.2 and updated the firmware of my slingbox. Now I have problems with it. I have my slingbox connected to a Wireless Bridge and i cannot get to the slingbox.

When connected to the main router it works fine (although cannot get to setup internet viewing), but as soon as I move it to the wireless bridge the network led just keeps blinking. I have it setup with a static IP so I don't understand.

After upgrading the firmware all started to go wrong. Any ideas? Can the firmware be downgraded?

Sort of, there's a thread on downgrading firmware but it's much harder than software.  You can always try downgrading the PC software, that's easy enough to do by uninstalling and reinstalling the old version.

Before you do anything drastic, unplug (power) the router, slingbox, and wireless bridge.  Then, re-connect the router, and after several minutes the bridge.  Wait a few more minutes and connect a computer, or slingbox to the bridge.  Hopefully a simple "reboot" of the whole system will cure it.

I recommend you first do a factory-reset on the SlingBox and try setting it up again.  See if that helps your situation - maybe the wireless link dropped for a moment during the flash and corrupted something.  Maybe try re-flashing the firmware while it's connected, by wire, to the router.

Make sure your bridge is working - take a computer and hook up to the wireless bridge, then check the settings and see if you can get to the internet.  You may need to reconfigure the bridge.

Great. I'll try. One question, how do I reinstall the firmware? It did it automatically, and now to do it again I need the firmware file.

Where can I download the firmwnare files?

March 31, 2009 9:47 AM

The firmware file seems to be part of the SlingPlayer software. Nevertheless, the firmware could exist on your PC as a separate file somewhere. Could it be in the installation directory? Can anyone confrirm this? What are the file names and can they be extracted indivicually?

What should the firmware file be called or which extension? Cannot find it in the installation directory. Thanks

Go to SlingDirectory, click your slingbox and "Edit" -- there should be a tab on the setup wizard for firmware update.  Click that and choose advanced mode.  Then, browse and select the correct firmware file from your computer and update/upload.

How to get the firmware file?

The preffered (and easier) method is to access it from the installation directory:
XP (I think): C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0\Firmware
Vista: C:\ProgramData\Sling Media\SlingPlayer\2.0\Firmware

Or you can download it - after a couple requests from Mac users, I uploaded the newest firmware files available here:

Hope this helps!

I have a different problem from others I've seen here. After upgrade, SlingPlayer-2.0.2500 fails to startup - I get a Windows error that Sling Player "failed to initialize..." I uninstalled and downgraded to SlingPlayer-2.0.1481, and that works OK. I'm on Windowx XP sp3. My slingbox is a 4 month old PRO-HD. I checked for firmware updates, and the box was up-to-date. I did notice that the SlingPlayer-2.0.2500 setup file is around 46 MB and the SlingPlayer-2.0.1481 setup file is around 95 MB. I've tried upgrades from SlingPlayer and clean installs (uninstall old version, reboot, install new version) with no difference in outcome.

Do any of you have suggestions on this, or on how to troubleshoot it?

Thx...

Why can“t we in Europ downlod this critical upgrade. It is impossible to use our Slingboxes.SlingMedia has been sleeping 1.5 years. Please answer how long to wait.

From what i can see on the forums, this issue still hasnt been resolved, which is a shame as it took me ages to get the new version of 2.0.2 installed.

I too am affected with this flashing remote issue, which screws up my screen when u try to close the client, but i have done a little digging up on this.

The flashing remote appears to happen exactly at the same time when im seeing Sling Player opening new HTTP connections trying to connect to akamai technology IP addresses, im presuming this is something to do with the built in tv guide - the IP addresses im seeing are:

92.122.126.26 (a92-122-126-26.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com)
80.157.169.170

All the responses are LAST_ACK.

I also have the WAN dial home outgoing Port blocked as i dont need to fault find from an internet connection - is this causing the constant HTTP connects above?
