Update: SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Only for Slingbox PRO, SOLO, and PRO HD Users

Sling Media has just put up a new page on their website announcing an $50 upgrade incentive for Slingbox Classic, Slingbox AV, and Slingbox Tuner customers.

What's interesting is at the bottom of the page, it reads:

Sling Media is encouraging customers who own these earlier versions of Slingbox to upgrade to Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD to take advantage of next generation software and services that will only be supported when using the most current Slingbox and SlingLoaded products. Future software includes the highly anticipated SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone software launching soon.

Current Slingbox functionality will not be affected if you choose not to upgrade, but software like SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and future services yet to be announced will only be supported for customers using Slingbox SOLO and Slingbox PRO-HD products or forthcoming SlingLoaded products.

See the page here: http://www.slingmedia.com/go/upgrade

Curious is the omission of the Slingbox PRO from their upgrade program. Taken at face value, it doesn't say the Slingbox PRO will or won't work with future products, like SlingPlayer for iPhone, but you don't get an upgrade incentive if you own one.

The SlingCommunity Team is looking into this. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: We've made some well placed e-mails, and it looks like Slingbox PRO owners will get the best of both worlds. For starters, the Slingbox PRO will work with SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone, and if you call Sling to inquire about an upgrade, it seems you'll also get to take advantage of the sweet $50 rebate. Omission of the PRO from the page apparently wasn't intentional, and will be corrected soon.

I wouldn't hold my breath for the Palm Pre - I'd like it to succeed but IF (still an uncertain if) it takes off it'll still likely be at least a year before Sling releases an app and would most likely have the same restrictions.

Orb is a PITA to set up and has poor support, and unless you already have a compatible TV Tuner and IR receiver for channel change you're looking at shelling out about the same as a new slingbox.

That said, I'm as upset as anyone for Sling pulling this on us at the last minute. I hope it might still end up working with my parents' AV but if not this sucks. Would love getting their stations on the iPhone but it's not worth the upgrade.

This has to be an April Fools. If you go to the upgrade option and enter all 1's for the serial number it gives a promo code of 1234567. It then shows the price if the slingboxes at £25 less than the normal price. It then states that your order will be handeled by Amazon UK and redirects you to Amazon but nothing further and nowhere to input the promo code.

You have to pay to play, just post the app and be done with it

This is NOT an April Fool's joke, everyone. This is real and while it does suck, it's the reality.

Entering all 1's for the serial results in an invalid serial number - at least on the US site. I can't speak for the UK site.

I wonder what makes the PRO different from the Tuner and AV in this situation.

Sales and that the Pro is still sold in some places around the world. The Tuner and AV are the same hardware platform as the Pro AFAIK...They all came out at the same time.

OK - so lets get this right, you gotta buy the app from the app store, then buy a new slingbox in order to watch tv on the iphone?

Wake up Sling! Look after UK customers!

I kind of thought they were the same hardware platform too. So it all comes down to sales then?

The answer is hell no. I will NOT be purchasing the Slingplayer for iPhone.

I'll use my AV box until it blows and hopefully by then there will be another vendor.

you guys seriously screwed up on this one.

Basically. The Pro is still being sold at retail in countries outside the US. AFAIK, the others are not.

The Tuner was the first to go and probably was the worst seller. It's all but obsolete anyhow.

The AV was a good box but the Solo is a much better box and the AV probably didn't sell all that well compared to the Pro either.

So, I'm guessing they drew the line there not for technical reasons but because of sales and where the products are being sold.

This tells me one of three things:

1.) That the Pro has upgradable features no one knows about and will be able to do the same thing as the Solo and ProHD in terms of new features.

2.) The the whole idea of supporting new features, and so forth is marketing talk and nothing more.

3.) That new features are coming but that the Pro will not get those and will be gradually phased out over time.

Does anyone know how the upgrade process will work? Can I get a good price at Amazon and then get a rebate or is it $50 off the price at Sling Media's online store?

April 1, 2009 4:22 PM

Screw this. No way am I going to buy new hardware to get the player on my iPhone. I'm guess Sling just really pissed off a lot of customers.

Dunno. Nothing's been said about it yet...
latest blogasphere rumour is that there will be a palm emulator on the pre.  Not that that would work with the SPM software or anything.

I can suggest that this recent lack of dedication to Sling's loyal fan base is a long time coming result of EchoStar trying to make more of a return on their investment.

Poor show guys...

Sorry about ranting again but I just saw another comment that suggests supporting this many devices justifies the move, normally I would agree with this (reluctantly I might add). However this week I got an e-mail from Expansys telling me that Slingbox Classic are now back in stock (http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=170005 100+ in stock).

If you are going to still sell these Sling, then you need to support them too, right?!?

Adam, I too have asked questions about the launch of PRO-HD in the UK and no-one for Slingmedia will put their head above a castlation or parapit!  I so want to upgrade to Pro-HD (currently have a Classic) as I have a Catcher in our second home and I think Slingmedia have generally forgotten about the UK.

I know the Gadget Show (UK TV Show) are going to review the Slingcatcher soon and I may just tweet the presenters and give them the "bad news" about products in the UK being shelved and the replacement products not being available.

I don't think sling is saying here that they won't support these legacy units, only that these units are not future proof. Many companies have done the same thing, only recent unit can run a certain version of software.

I think sling will continue to support them, as functioning devices (if there is a warranty of course)
