My 'Classic' serial won't work either. What is up with this?
I'm also disappointed that I will have to spend even more money - on the App for iPhone AND a new Slingbox, in order to get this functionality. And while it is very easy to say that they had to drop support for the old boxes eventually, these boxes aren't that old, and are still highly functional. Sling decided a couple of years ago there was more money to be had in expanding their product line, and now we're to pay the price.
In any case, is there anyone we can contact on this serial number issue? I'm in Canada.

Sling Media has just put up a new page on their website announcing an $50 upgrade incentive for Slingbox Classic, Slingbox AV, and Slingbox Tuner customers.
What's interesting is at the bottom of the page, it reads:
Sling Media is encouraging customers who own these earlier versions of Slingbox to upgrade to Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD to take advantage of next generation software and services that will only be supported when using the most current Slingbox and SlingLoaded products. Future software includes the highly anticipated SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone software launching soon.
Current Slingbox functionality will not be affected if you choose not to upgrade, but software like SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and future services yet to be announced will only be supported for customers using Slingbox SOLO and Slingbox PRO-HD products or forthcoming SlingLoaded products.

Curious is the omission of the Slingbox PRO from their upgrade program. Taken at face value, it doesn't say the Slingbox PRO will or won't work with future products, like SlingPlayer for iPhone, but you don't get an upgrade incentive if you own one.
The SlingCommunity Team is looking into this. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: We've made some well placed e-mails, and it looks like Slingbox PRO owners will get the best of both worlds. For starters, the Slingbox PRO will work with SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone, and if you call Sling to inquire about an upgrade, it seems you'll also get to take advantage of the sweet $50 rebate. Omission of the PRO from the page apparently wasn't intentional, and will be corrected soon.

This is extremely disappointing. Better yet this is complete crap. iphone app has been one of the most anticipated apps. To not support all of the slingbox models is called greed. I hope all iphone users boycott the purchase of the app and force them to support all of the slingbox models.

Sling is Giving you $50.00 off Sling's store list price to make it $245.95 with free Shipping. But you have to buy from their store for this discount.
What's the great deal here? I was hopping Sling would have given you some sort of Universal Coupon code for one of their dealers.

Why spend time and money to pay someone to set this all up? Just to have Sling's dealers selling the product for less then Sling is with this discount?
Update. My wife just said, "This is great marketing" many people now will buy Sling Boxes from Amazon thinking they are getting a good deal. Because Sling is selling it for higher price. Even with discount. Sling doesn't care as long as they sell the boxes.

Do those 'sling' in a specific codec? I think it may be because the iPhone can only do video that is mp4 or h264 or something of that nature that I know for sure the slingbox hd does... Don't quote me but that was my understanding..
I have only just bought the classic and set it up last weekend !!
I was really pleased with it and looking forward to getting the app for my iphone, for sling to do this really takes the p-ss out of people that bought their product. There is no way they will all rush out and buy a new box.
They will also lose out on a shed load of money from people who will not now buy the app ?

They were nearly a year late on delivering the Macintosh player, and now they pull this stunt?
I was an early adopter, and did my best to stick by the company even though they broke promise after promise to Macintosh users. (My Slingbox sat idle for the year I waited for the Macintosh player to be delivered.)
I patiently waited for the Slingplayer app for my iPhone, too. But once again, Sling takes a huge stinky dump all over the early adopters.
So long, Sling. You've lost another customer.
where did u get your classic that recently? if u bought it from a legitimate retailer then I would think uu have a pretty good complaint with sling
Lame. So Lame. I have the classic and have had it 4 years, i got a touch last year and love it. I would have shelled up upwards of 50 plus for this app from sling, I would've loved to use this, but I'm done for now unless I hear differently.

Not only that, but Macworld was in January, and they would have known this then, but of course nothing was said until now, when we're on the edge of the App finally being available.
To another posters point, I too waited patiently for the Mac version of the Slingbox Player to become available, and have been very happy with it. The iPhone App was going to extend that. Also, the firmware for the Classic is still being evolved and is in current development still, so I don't understand. Maybe some sort of explanation would help all of us....
What sh*t! Let me get this straight... Those of us who were early adopters (who really beta tested the original product, with it's lousy firmware), then spent money on a Windows Mobile client will now be rewarded by having to rebuy a Slinbox? WTF? Who do they think they're kidding?

There is no technical reason that the iphone app could not support the older sling units. I have recommended slingbox to many people. That stops as of now.

I can't BELIEVE slingbox would do this. I have been anticipating this app ever since i got my iPhone more than a year ago. I check every morning when i wake up to see if the slingbox app is in the store.
Unfortunatly, now i find that it won't work with EITHER of my slingboxes, the classic or the AV, i feel completely gipped - I have supported this company, raved about it to other people - and now they say they wont support them?

You have lost out on $30 from me for the app. (Basically free money) And moreso, you have lost out on the revenue from all the people i will not tell about slingbox. Theres no way i'm going out and spending $250 on a new slingbox, and then another $30 on an app.

the funny thing is all the old slingbox models worked just fine with the beta version of the Iphone app. no doubt this is pure greed. even if you want to argue the app didn't work as well with the old boxes (which is not true by all accounts) let the end user decide, don't force an upgrade.
I purchased your product. I was so pleased with it I recommended it to many people. The thanks I got was a forced hardware upgrade and to pay for the software. I am truly furious over this very poor decision. So many companies make terrible decisions like TiVO who has yet to turn a profit and XM/Sirrius being near bankruptcy compounded by a global economy that is in recession and yet Slingbox turns on its customer base. Sling is simply adopting the Apple screw the customer and force upgrades approach to make money. I have news for them though, they are no Apple nor are they popular enough to succeed in this endevour. Echostar may have found it wise to buy Slingmedia for 380 million dollars but they won't get another penny out of me. As for word of mouth, well... the loyalty Slingmedia shows its customers will be reciprocated proportionally.
I own a solo so this doesn't affect me perse... but this is utter crap. no wonder the founders left sling...
sling was built on community... way to go...
