Stop half assin' your work.??? Had you bothered to think before you posted, you'd realize this is a news blog in an independent enthusiast community website. AT&T Modifies Wireless Data Terms, Outlaws Slingbox and Other Placeshifting Devices
Categories: News, Rumors and Gossip Sling Media Hardware SlingPlayer Mobile iPhone / iPod Touch Mobile Phones / Portable Devices
Looks like nation's largest wireless provider is running scared that SlingPlayer for iPhone will be approved in the near future. As a result, some changes have recently made their way into the Empire's Wireless Data Terms and Conditions to outlaw all placeshifting devices from their network.
From the AT&T Wireless Data Terms and Conditions:
"This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, customer initiated redirection of television or other video or audio signals via any technology from a fixed location to a mobile device, web broadcasting, and/or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices and/or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition devices is prohibited."
The fact that verbage has been added just before SlingPlayer landed on the data hungry iPhone implies that it's targeted directly at the Slingbox.
How they're going to enforce it is a different matter, given the number of Slingers on their network already. Anyone know if AT&T is rolling out a clone army along with other network enhancements?
[Thanks drs]
UPDATE: According to this post on Engadget, AT&T has retracted their new terms of service, issuing the following statement:
"The language added on March 30 to AT&T's wireless data service Terms and Conditions was done in error. It was brought to our attention and we have since removed it. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."
Except I just looked now, and the language (at least the part that says "customer initiated redirection of television or other video or audio signals via any technology from a fixed location to a mobile device") has not since been removed. Maybe this statement was a bit ahead of the correction, but until the language is off their site, SlingCommunity isn't calling it "retracted." We'll check again in a little while...
Okay, it looks like AT&T finally got their act together and updated their TOS to it's less strict form. We're happy now.

i just talked to an att rep and he said that it didnt affect the iphone unlimited plan. he said we can down load what ever we wanted. sling player is a quality product and even though they are late they do come through.
Glad the TOS has been changed..
BTW,
I hooked up my iPhone 3G to my laptop and ran PdaNet. I was then able to run my SlingPlayer.. picture not to bad on 3g.
there 3G network isn't as strong as they say it is. I'm mostly in the Jersey City area and surroundings and barely get a 3G signal. Its right across from NYC-go figures. Since so many people have iphones, i guarantee you that AT&T is scared their network can't handle the usage. i only got the iphone for slingbox and had the bold with it working fine. The iphone is the best phone I have used and the browser is unbeatable. I pray Verizon comes out with it so we can dump this fake provider-mark my words. If Verizon gets on board with the iphone, AT&T will have trouble.
Obviously AT$T is scared of the Sling player app chewing up their precious bandwidth. They have so little to begin with and so I would just make Sling a WIFI only app. Skype is WIFI only because AT@T doesn't like competition. AT$T is gonna die after VOIP and WIMAX dominate. I hope Apple ejects them like burned toast when they have outlived their usefulness. It's just a matter of time. For now, just release the damn app for WIFI and get CLEAR or WiMax service if you need to be mobile to get your TV fix on the IPHONE. Just my 2 cents.....
