Sling Media Releases SlingPlayer for Mac OS X 1.0.8, Debuts Hybrid Scanning for PRO HD

Sling Media has let loose a new SlingPlayer for Mac OS X, dubbed 1.0.8. We're told this is a minor release, but there are a few new things here for Mac owners, and in a surprising twist, one of which isn't yet available for the PC.

For starters, Sling Media has bundled the latest Slingbox firmware versions in 1.0.8, which should help alleviate some headaches for Mac only households that have, say, a SlingCatcher.

On the new feature front, 1.0.8 marks the debut of hybrid scanning for the PRO HD, something owners of the high-def Slingbox (at least those with cable service) have been looking forward to. In the past, the coax input could only scan for analog OR Clear-QAM digital channels, which meant choosing between more channels or HD for most (or redoing your channel scan everytime you wanted to watch one or the other). Hybrid tuning allows the Slingbox to scan for both simultaneously, allowing you to enjoy both SD analog and HD channels your provider offers. It's unclear when this functionality will be available to PC owners.

Finally, PRO HD owners using the digital coax input will now also be able to switch audio channels for stations broadcasting multiple audio channels, common for shows that are offered in more than one language.

Though it may seem like nothing compared to the long awaited features 2.0 offers on the PC, Sling still seems to be hard at work on the prototype web-based Mac player shown at Macworld, at least based on rumors circling the web. Their hopeful Q1 estimate has come and gone to no surprise, but we haven't received any official word that the project has been abandoned. If that’s the case, then HD and other hot features should be making their way to OS X sometime soon.

Other improvements according to the download page:

  • Improved video quality
  • Hybrid tuning support for the Slingbox PRO-HD
  • Online Slingbox registration added; plus users can store their Slingbox ID online for easy access
  • Improved Slingbox Setup Assistant: New setup and configuration screens are streamlined and easier to use
  • Users can rapidly cycle between Fullscreen (4:3), Widescreen (16:9), Letterbox, Windowbox, Pillarbox modes
  • Show / Hide player controls with one-click toggle

I could really use the hybrid scanning for my PC Slingplayer program. Hopefully they are working on it.

You Mac guys always get the good stuff first.... :Laughing

My box is still not made for the USA...my Coax input still doesn't detect video...I still drop randomly to 0 kbps and have to unplug to restart it...I am still missing my remote...in other words, this fixed pretty much no problems. Guess we can look on the bright side...new things are being added even though the old things don't work properly.

What kind of box do you have?

From what I have read, the issue you describe is due to a hardware failure in the box. No amount of new software or firmware will fix it. You may need to contact support about this.

Yeah, I know it's a hardware problem, but I don't feel like paying $29.99 for support to diagnose an issue that I already know what it is, and I don't feel like paying an additional $70 after that to replace the box when I have read on these forums that multiple people have gotten their boxes replaced 2-3 months out of warranty. I am out of warranty by 4 months. Bought it at Christmas 2007.

Well, how do you want us to help you? Seems like you'll just need to make that $30 call. I wouldn't expect firmware or client software changes to fix a hardware problem. I think that's being a little unfair...
